Sometimes he checks up on the supply of painkillers and other meds; other times, he's running the equipment and using himself as a guinea pig since he (thinks he) heals the fastest out of the crew.
He does leave the medbay sometimes, though - mostly to cook, since they don't exactly have a cooking augment amongst them. Stefan's kinda wishing he had more proper lessons from someone like Eugene (or hell, even Jason before the guy left), but at least the food's edible.]
no subject
You're cooking?
no subject
Trying to make them edible, at least.
[Stefan sets the stove heat to 'low', grabbing a mug and pouring himself some green tea.] You have any special requests for tonight?
no subject
I mean, I'd love some spaghetti bolognese, but, you know. I'll take flavored glue instead.
no subject
He quickly gulps down some of his tea.] But seriously - you actually need this stuff. If fake teriyaki beef isn't your style, what would work better?
no subject
No, it's fine. Teriyaki's fine. I'm just...
[Points of ellipses seem to be her catchphrase lately. She shrugs.]
no subject
[He's not fluent in Alex-ese, but he's sure gonna try. Stefan pauses for a second, gauging if anyone else's nearby. He can't hear anyone else approaching, so he lets out a breath and looks her in the eye.] Look, about the other day... I should've been honest about my faith. I haven't talked to you a lot about it, but there's... you know I'm Muslim, and keeping that faith's pretty important to me.
But some things're harder to follow than others. I should've guessed that by now.
no subject
No, dude, you don't owe me an explanation. I'm the one who was getting all handsy. Religion just... it's not a thing I think about, you know? And that's all kinds of ignorant of me.
[She wishes she could sink back through the wall, into the hallway. Possibly into outer space.]
I was just being stupid. It's been a long time since I was that close to someone, and I misjudged.
no subject
So you getting all "handsy" and stuff? I should've cut you off, but I didn't. [Because, he's slowly coming to realize, he might've wanted it too.] And that was on me.
Plus, uh... [He sighs. Heavily.] I can't afford to see where it goes, unless you're into "marriage or bust."
no subject
[Her face goes red - not as much as Stefan's can get, but it's competition. She rubs at the back of her head.]
I wasn't really thinking that far. But just... you aren't like breaking my heart or anything, okay? It's alright.
["It's just sex, and I can get that anywhere," she wants to say. But that would be a total lie on multiple counts.]
I understand why you can't.
no subject
It's not supposed to be, he knows. It's not, but then stuff like this happens.] It's... most people I know don't think that far. Because of who I am, and because of what I practice? It has to be on my mind. I've gotta think, "can I spend eternity with her?" from the get-go. "Does she think the same about kids? What kind of lifestyle's she gonna lead?" I don't know exactly what I feel about you - but I can't. I can't throw away what we have.
[He takes another sip of his tea.] I like you a lot, Alex. Really.
I... until I can get that straight, and work stuff out with Elena, it's gonna be hard to sift through.
no subject
We don't even know where we'll be tomorrow. One of us could go home anytime.
[What she doesn't say: "Besides, I'd be terrible. I'd be an awful wife. You'd get sick of me. It wouldn't work."]
... Who's Elena?
no subject
Elena, though... Elena's a really good friend of mine from back home. Mystic Falls home, not Jersey-home. We've been through a lot together, and uh, we dated each other in high school.
[Quickly:] We're not dating now. We haven't been for a while. But I'm not sure where we stand, and since she's on the Fleet... it'll take a while to figure that out.
no subject
... I had someone, back in Paradisa. We were still together when I got pulled here, and I don't know... I can't imagine how I'd feel if she showed up here. It's been a long time.
no subject
No wonder this is hitting her just as hard.] That's exactly how it is for me.
I was uh, under the impression I'd never see her again, and then I arrive on the Fleet and she's there, and it's like a whole bunch of memories come rushing to the surface. [He mimics the rushing with his free hand, and this time, it is not a poor imitation.] I think it's been about... two years for me? But for her, it was maybe less than three months.
[He was also an idiot, but another story for another time.] Plus she doesn't know I'm Muslim, or well, we haven't broached it, and I wanna have that discussion before... anything happens, I guess.
no subject
Do you still have feelings for her?
no subject
Had anyone else asked, Stefan would've sputtered and split his tea all over the place, because he couldn't still love her like that. He loved a memory, not the real deal. Except... it's Alex, and she deserves the truth, so he sets his tea down.] Yeah, I think I do.
[He takes a deep breath.]
But like I said, she's not Muslim. As understanding as she is, I don't know if she's willing to deal with that. [Or if she even likes him in return.]
no subject
She will, if she's any kind of decent human being
no subject
[There's more to it than the religion issue - namely, whether she'd like him even if he doesn't have all of Salvatore's memories, or if she'd even want to remain his friend, or... the scenarios become too numerous to mention.
Sitting down on the chair next to her, he manages a thin smile.] Thanks. You know, you're a pretty decent one yourself.
no subject
Even if I wanna make out with all the wrong people?
no subject
[He leans in and flicks her nose - while a smarter guy might've bristled from the intimacy, because that was the issue earlier, he's explained himself well enough that he allows this one gesture.] I can't promise I won't barge in and interrupt you at the worst possible moment, either.
no subject
Yeah, because I'm always bringing people back to the bunks.
no subject
But uh... we good for now?
no subject
[She smiles at him, pushing the tea back over in his direction.]
Actually... I was going to ask you, one of these days - would you, uh, maybe want to be my first mate?
no subject
[He reaches for his tea, tempted to gulp it down as if it were the strongest booze available. Because for him, tea IS his one vice.] You're sure you want me, and not some other chump?
