You never know how much you don't want to be responsible for something until it's gone. A weight has been lifted. I can write again! So, to treat all of you lovely fellow prisoners who are tired of that shitty moon we've been docked at for a month, I've decided to share a chapter from my latest novel.

Maker, being captain sucks. But I'm sure Captain James Kirk won't run the ship into the ground-- because I'll shoot him if he screws up.

No pressure.

Meirin hated sailing. The humidity did awful things to his hair, but besides that, he hated how it was always moving. All his life he had been just like a lake, never staying the same but always in one place. Now he had no choice but to leave... unless he wanted a noose around his neck. Thankfully he had enough gold that he could buy his way onto a ship, but hell, the crew hated his guts.

It wasn't just because they were pirates. That would've been reason enough, considering a templar represented the law and the Chantry both. But their beloved captain was none other than a Qunari. Meirin quite liked the captain, actually; he'd found him through a mutual friend, who claimed he was incredibly reasonable and didn't actually give a damn about the Qun. So that was something.

After his morning stretches, Meirin made his way to the deck. The half-muted brightness blinded him, so he had to squint as he looked out over the relatively-calm ocean. One of the deckhands joined him at the railing. He was the first to do so and Meirin had been sailing with them for a few weeks.

"Are you going to Rivain, then?" the boy asked. He couldn't have been older than sixteen judging by his size. His origins were certainly a mystery to Meirin, as his skin was so dark it was blue, and he had strange blue markings across his cheeks. At first they looked like nothing more than paint but Meirin noticed they glowed with a light of their own. They reminded him of lyrium.

"Yeah." Meirin tucked a stray bit of red hair behind his ear. The wind liked fussing with his hair almost as much as he did. "I need to meet with someone I haven't seen in a long time."

The boy tilted his head. "You are a templar, are you not? I thought that templars served the Order and the Chantry."

Straight to the point, huh. Something seemed strange about the deckhand's features, like he was perhaps too youthful, and Meirin had to tear himself away. "They do, but I'm not a templar anymore. I quit."

"You... quit?" the boy repeated, as if he didn't believe it.

"They stripped my title and I think they were about to hang me for 'conspiring with blood mages' or something. So, yeah. I quit." He turned around and leaned against the banister as he looked the deckhand over. "Are you new or something?"

It surprised him to see the boy blush. The markings on his face pulsed in a telling way, and then he adjusted his hat and looked down. "It is my first time to Rivain."

Meirin took the blush to mean that the deckhand was nervous about getting lucky. He laughed lightly and rested a hand on the boy's shoulder. "Watch your money and keep your standards low, and you won't be disappointed."

Jim seems to know what he's doing, at least.

Interesting story you've got going there, I'd love to know the rest.

[Templars, blood mages, a deckhand that sounded awfully familiar to someone they knew. Anders couldn't deny it was entertaining, at least.]

You sound surprised! You put it out there for us to read, I read it. Honestly, there's not much else I'm doing with my time right now.

I like a good story as much as the next guy.
