[The video opens up to show what sure is a red-skinned guy in a skin-tight blue suit with a bright yellow jewel on his forehead. Someone isn't going for subtlety with his look. When he speaks, it's with a cultured voice and a light British accent.]

Good evening. For those of you I have not yet met, my name is the Vision and yes, this is my normal appearance. I am an engineer aboard the SS Windrose. Like many of you I have been exploring the derelict ship and I believe it is possible to cleanse it of the fungal infection using a process known as vacuum sterilization. Essentially this means moving the air to one half the ship and opening airlocks on the other half, allowing anything not securely bolted to be swept into space - including infectious spores. We would then close the doors, filter the air, move it to the disinfected side and repeat the process. Once it is clean, we may investigate further without fear of infection to ourselves and determine if the ship is capable of being used by us, either for our own purposes or to return to its original owners.

[His expression softens to one of sorrow.] However, in order to be fully confident this cleansing would be effective, it would be necessary to release the infected bodies of the fallen life-forms into space as well. They were once fully sapient individuals, before the infection took hold, and such an action should not be undertaken lightly. Is this a course of action the Fleet would support? If there are any of you who are conversant in such things, would you consider holding a funeral or memorial ceremony for those who have been our enemies?

[Allen's got several thoughts on this. He's not sure which way to approach it first.]

Are you sure the fungus won't survive in space? I don't want another ship passing through to contract it by accident.

The results I've seen from the medical tests would indicate it does not, but we can of course verify beforehand.

[He tilts his head to one side.] Though the chances of encountering anything by chance in space are, if I may use the term, astronomically low.

I would like to verify it, just in case. And...I'd be in full support of making sure the victims of the fungus get treated with proper respect. It's a tragedy what happened to them, and they need to be put to rest properly.

[He nods with a rueful expression.] I suppose that is true. If there are any lab facilities available, we can put it to the test right away.

[And there's that concerned expression again. It's one he wears a lot.] Regardless of what is decided to do about the ship, at the very least we can take a copy of the logs to the next inhabited station and attempt to pass them on. If we do not travel too far, I'm quite sure someone in this sector will know of their society.

[a slight nod] Thank you.

That's a good idea, their people have a right to know. We should also probably pass along any information we can about the fungus, so they can take precautions from this happening again.

It is no trouble, except that my ship does not have a lab. Otherwise I would have done so already.

I realize the treatments we have developed have come too late in the life-cycle of the fungus to be effective, but they may work well on a new infection. Or perhaps a vaccine could be developed that would prevent infection in the first place.

You can use the Blue Fish's, if you'd like. I'm one of the lab assistants there.

[Not that he's done much assisting this month because how the heck do bugs work???]

Yes, exactly. The more we can send to help them, the better...even if we are too late to save the ones on the ship.

[There are plenty of samples, after all.]

From my understanding of the timeline of events, it was already too late by the time our ships arrived. It is tragic--yet if we can use the experience to help others, their call for aid need not be in vain.

Mm.

[He gives a simple nod to that. It was tragic, certainly- but it wasn't something he was unaccustomed to- that's what it meant to be an Exorcist. As long as he can make sure these souls get proper rest...well, that'll have to do]

...Do you truly wish to keep the ship? I'm not sure that's a good idea.

[He raises an eyebrow.]

Resources in space are extremely limited. Do you have a reason we should not keep it?

Even if we couldn't help them- we kill them then take their ship?

It seems like graverobbing to me.

[ Evenly, ]

We could put a plaque on one of the walls. List the number of the dead, even if we didn't know their names.

If we have an accurate count, certainly. There may also be a crew roster in one of the ship's logs.

I'll look for that as we go through it. There's a lot in the inner ship that hasn't been cleared out yet. Any luck with the encryption?

[Ah, now he sees the nature of the concern. His inquiry is curious rather than judgmental.]

It was not intended as a tomb, but as a vessel to be used. You would see it as disrespectful to their memory to repurpose the ship?

The surface encryption is light, more of a translation problem than anything else; those data were meant to be used every day, I think. I have not begun on the deeper encryptions yet as there have been other concerns.

When we're the ones who killed them, even if we had no choice- yes. Yes that seems disrespectful.

[Clearly someone is not an RPG character]

Unfortunately, this sounds very much like a plague situation we might find in my world. If there is no cure for them, and their only fate is death, it might be kinder to see them off quickly than let them linger and suffer. But I think that a small service for them might not be amiss.

If it might help... I have a Gift called Fire Starting. I agree with Allen's concerns of other ships running across the fungus. If it might lower the possibility, I could attempt to burn some off to lower the volume.

[He nods - it's very similar to what his friends would call a "zombie scenario".] I would agree. The fungus seems to want to spread its infection, as any infectious agent would. Stopping it before it can complete its goal might save many more lives. It is unfortunate that we were too late for the original hosts.

Yes, that would be helpful if it is something you can control. Fire in a contained environment is not without risk, but once we gain the ability to seal off sections of the ship it could certainly be used.

[The Vision nods.] Thank you for the input. What if we were to take it with us to the next inhabited station to see if it could be returned to their society?

[It just seems wasteful to leave a perfectly good ship out here in space.]

Yes, very much agreed. I would see if my Healing Gift could help, but it has never been strong in me. I think it might be best to halt it as soon as we can and prevent as many more infections as possible.

I can start it away from myself, if that is what you mean. Fire is rather contrary element, so once I lose it it will do as it will, but I do not have to be overly close to start it either.

If it would be possible to test it on any of them--yes, I would like to know the results very much. Nervous tissue is very difficult to repair, but if we can save even one of them it would be a great advantage.

Yes, my concern is that it could spread rapidly and be a danger to others onboard. Once we can seal areas, though, to start a fire on the other side would be acceptable; the air can always be voided to stop if it necessary.

What if they don't know anything about the society? And who's to say they'd even return it? It makes more sense for us to keep it until we can make sure it's given back.

Until then, we could use it.

We can cremate them. If that one guy's worried about fire getting out of control, my friends and I can take care of that. [A pause.] They deserve something. Getting taken over like that wasn't their fault.

You have a way to control fire? That would be very useful, in that case. I would agree with this proposal.
