[Ray is looking bored bored bored. He has a toothpick stuck in the corner of his mouth, and he's throwing a ball from one hand to the other, sometimes scrambling after it when he misses- it's astigmatism, okay, he just doesn't see all that good.]

Alright, so I got a question. Not everyone here's from Earth, whatever, but most of you are from some kinda place with some kinda rules and laws. And I figure a bunch of you have gotta be law enforcement yourselves, y'know, statically. [sic]

Now me? I'm just a regular schmo, city cop worked his way up to Detective. I didn't always wanna be a cop, but I tried it out and it stuck. Chasin' bad guys, putting on the heat, lock 'em up. Bam-bam-bam. [He slams the ball into his hand three times, then sits forward and grins.] It's a job, right? Just like bein' an engineer in here.

[He misses it. He misses it a lot, actually; misses his partner and the job, the satisfaction of a puzzle and a chase and locking up someone who made the world a little more dangerous.] So the rest of you: what do you do? How's it work in your world?

[Added, a few minutes later:]

By the way: I don't have my ar here to race you in, but back home I'm the last guy you wanna get into a car chase with. [He may be exaggerating slightly, but who could contradict him?] Figure I gotta keep those instinct working. I'll be there in two hours, ready to go.

I figured I'd let the good people of the Fleet get a shot at answering, but hey, you're up for it--

[Wait, racing? She is all over that. And just pops up at the appropriate time

Grinning in a way that should probably be worrying, come to think of it.]

Okay, let's go kick some ass.

[She's totally still allowed to do this, right? Maybe she should have asked a doctor first. Maybe that's the reason she very carefully didn't ask her doctor.]

Oh and you asked about law enforcement, right? We have the Order of Justice. They were kind of run down for a while and the militia did a lot of policing, but the general got them back up and running because she thought that was a bad idea.

I think I said I'm captain of the Kirkwall city guard. Most cities have a city guard. A lot of guards are former soldiers, but not all of them.

[She shrugs, vaguely.]

[Beverly's still not entirely sure how to react to Ray, as he's so unlike anyone she's met before, but she can't deny that she's intrigued by the whole detective thing, even if murder mysteries don't hold quite the same sway over her imagination after what happened to Reyga.]

You never told me you were a detective!

[ She looks thoughtful about this question. It's somewhat important; she's never considered it before. ]

I am an adventurer, but there are many titles I hold now that may work like...law enforcement?

[ Hmmmm. ] I am a soldier of the Immortal Flames, and a member of the Scions. I used to be a mercenary. All of those sort of fall into that. I think?

[Worrying grins is what Ray is all about, and he leans on the table, taps his foot on the floor.]

They fly around in little spaceships, or what?

[He'd want to know, usually, but you know-- racing, racing.]

I didn't? [That's-- weird, kind of. He's so used to that being his thing, who he is. He has so little else going on in his life (isn't that pathetic?) that it's usually the only reason people know him. Colleagues or perps.]

Yeah, I-- Fifteen years, I guess, just about.

I'm up any time.

[It's okay, Ray, you were busy being starry-eyed over space.]

Really? So what's it like? I told you about my job, let's hear about yours!

Hover cycles, actually! But not as good as the heavy combat ones I know how to drive.

And I bet that's a lot like a little spaceship.

[If you get what she's implying.]

I am more used to racing horses than ships, so I shall be sending you my wishes for a victory, Ray.

I shall see if I cannot make you a prize for said win as well.

_{[ He's smiling warmly at the other man, their moments on the beach far from forgotten. ]}

How long you been doing that?

[ A question worthy of asking, yet one she had not considered for herself. ]

I work many jobs as an adventurer, yet I fear the one that holds the most weight as employment would be that I am a second lieutenant of the Immortal Flames, the grand company of Ul'dah.

I told you we don't really have coppers where I come from, yes? On my world, yes. In my country - none whatsoever.

I'm a private investigator back home. Used to like the idea of being a cop when I was a kid, but I ain't so good at following orders, you know Working for myself suits me just fine.

[Wanda's face appears on the screen, a friendly grin on her face. It feels like it has been some time since she and Ray last spoke. It was good to see and hear from him again.]

Hello, "Stanley." [Obvious attempt to poke fun is obvious.] I remember you mentioning that you worked in law enforcement. I suppose you could say we both had similar jobs.

Let's see. I joined the guard after I came to Kirkwall. It was about a year later that they started moving me into the role of Captain, after the previous captain was arrested.

[Maybe she had a role in that. Maybe.]

Six years since then, seven in all.

[The feed opens on a hard-edged, buzzed-cut woman with a cutting gaze. This, to her, is an excersize in posturing. It's a different world than the one she came from, but she's using what she learned as an Imperator to try and pull some clout among the fleet.]

I was a top Imperator for the Immortan. We upheld his law and protected his property. [Except, of course, when she did the exact opposite, but that's not the point she's trying to get across now.]

A position like mine is gained from overcoming the competition, and comes with great respect and responsibility. You get enough of that under your thumb, you can do nearly anything.

[He grins and sinks back in his seat, back to throwing the ball from hand to hand.]

What, you think me busting my ass on the street's gonna be more interesting than space? Bev, you're kiddin' yourself.

[Actually, his life is pretty weird, and he knows it. But he can admit defeat where it's due.]

Mercenary? That sounds a little, y'know-- [He draws a finger across his throat- a little too murdery.]

And I dunno what the, uh, Immortal Flames are. Or Scions.

What, and I flew around in a spaceship on the daily? You just gotta adapt, Van.

[He sits back, then, grinning a little, cheeks flushing.]

Yeah? What, you gonna gimme a kiss on the cheek, hand me some flowers?

Grand, huh? [He has- no idea what all of that means, but that's alright.]

Sounds like it's more military than police work. That about right?

Yeah, so-- what the fuck happens?

Well, I had thought more along the lines of a kiss on the lips and some flowers, but if prefer the cheek I can adapt, Ray.
