[What follows is a somewhat exasperated, very tired plea to the public, accompanied by a slow grinding noise every couple of seconds. For those who would recognize it, it's the sound of metal being sharpened, slowly and painstakingly.]

Hey, question for ships out there with security officers. Is it possible for those of us who don't have access to weaponry to buy or trade for a gun? I've got a project I'd like to try working on, but I don't have the parts here.

If trading for a weapon outright is against some sort of rule, or no one's willing, I'd take parts or schematics instead. Anything's better than what I have.

[For those aboard the Paisley, Kirito has been buried in engineering for a loooooong time, and the sound of grinding metal may or may not be echoing in the hallway outside of the entry door. Sorry ~~not sorry~~ for the potential headaches.]

[Stefan missed most of the broadcast, but he can't exactly miss the sound of sharpening metal. Since he also knows that Kirito missed their last meal, he's gonna poke his head in the engine room, with a plate of food in his hands.]

Hey. Everything okay in there?

[Scrape. Scrape. Scrape.

SIGH.

Kirito pauses after the last stroke - grinding a thick, sturdy metal chisel over a piece of rebar, maybe a couple of feet in length. He scrutinizes it for a moment, wiping off the edge he'd been working on with a wet cloth, then gets back to work.]

It's fine, just... tedious.

Ah.

[He sets the plate down somewhere nearby, leaning against one of the walls so he can watch this better. Stefan's got no experience with metal crafting, but even he can see effort and skill when it's in front of him.] When do you think it'll be done? I can try and find someone with experience in that kind of weaponry.

[Since, well - he has none. Vampiric strength means he's never really needed a proper weapon.]

[It isn't much of a show, admittedly. Kirito offers him a bit of a sour smile.]

Technically, I know someone with experience in smithing, but this definitely isn't a material she'd be satisfied with. And she also knows, uh, a different me.

[AKA, another avatar. He's really not sure how he's going to deal with that yet.]

What'll you pay?

[Ah... that is the hard part, isn't it. He's not really used to the currency yet, since he hasn't bought anything.]

Depends on what people might be charging. I haven't been here for long, so I don't have much in the way of funds. If I need to save up, I'll save up.

Aside from money, I can offer up temporary services as an engineer if there's ships without one. I can build computers and machinery if you need an extra pair of hands.

N-not interested. But "flim shim shanadoo," as they say. So I'll get back to you on money once I figure out what the exchange rate is here.

What kind of gun are you looking for?

[...What does that even mean, is that some kind of space lingo?]

As far as I know, the guns that are available are a couple varieties of energy pistols. I don't need one that's really powerful- something small and durable would be enough for me.

A gun using real bullets would be useless, in this case.

That... would do it, yeah.

[He winces in sympathy. Who knew his weird situation was more common than he thought?] Like she remembers things you did, but you haven't the faintest idea of what they might be?

[Fff. He does know someone like that, actually, but that's not the same one he means.]

No, ah... like when we met in person, she thought I was a girl.

[Remember that weird body shift kinda thing, Stefan?]

[Either that, or Rick is just a crazy, drunk old man. Jury is still out.]

Well, duh. Bullets are primitive anyway. S-so just a small power laser gun? You don't need it to shoot anti-matter or quasars, or...

[Someday, maybe, Kirito will know. Today is not that day.]

...Do you have guns that do that?

[Because- okay, he doesn't want them, but- wow. That would be cool.]

Oh.

[Weird, but not quite his weird situation. He pretends to scrutinize Kirito for a few seconds, before taking a glance at the weapon.]

You can't exactly, uh, turn back into that form at will?

Sort of... yes and no. I've been learning how, if I focus hard enough. That isn't the problem.

[He stops grinding down the metal, sighing faintly.]

When I first changed into that avatar, I kind of panicked and lied to her about who I was. It wouldn't feel right to ask for her help without coming clean, but... I think she might actually kill me for it.

Well, not on me, obviously. But if I'm making this shit to order, I need to know what you want.

[He may have forgotten to mention that part.]

[This guy... can make anti-matter--

--NO NO that would be way too ~~dangerous~~ expensive absurd.]

Ah... that's not necessary. It only needs to have a reliable power source.

She might, but... she might also respect that you're finally telling her the truth.

[This might be the voice of experience talking.]

If you want to, I mean. I can't exactly point fingers about secrets here.

[That sounds a little foreboding, but it's worth it for his project. Just might take some extra saving-up.]

Yeah, that's kind of why I told you.

[Out of everyone he's met here, Stefan's the one who has the least reason to judge him for that.]

Either way, I wanted to see what I was capable of on my own, first.

[Just for that, he rolls his eyes, caving in to the urge to fold his arms and-- well, he certainly looks the part of a brooding vampire right now.]

Better than anything I could've done. If you're using it to spar, it should hold up okay.

[You're not very encouraging, Stefan.]

My problem is durability. A blade like this isn't going to last, and the edge will wear too easily. It's not like I expect to use it much, but sooner or later it'll be worthless.

[He was definitely spoiled in SAO, where blades lasted practically forever so long as nothing was strong enough to break them outright.]

Even if it's for practice?

[Honestly, this is all out of his depth - if Kirito had said the opposite, Stefan would've bought it.] I think I remember some kids back in Tokyo practicing with those, uh, wooden swords?
