They're creatures that have existed since man, apparently. They're beasts that pray upon people, drawn to us by our negative emotions. They really don't seem to have any other purpose in existing, except to try and wipe us out. That's why huntsmen and huntresses exist, to protect people who can't protect themselves from Grimm.
