[It's probably not normal for a lack of something to be the first thing one notices upon waking up, but Mikleo opens his eyes to the realization that there's a serious lack of... weight on his chest, one he'd become resigned to feeling ever since leaving Elysia. Malevolence was everywhere in the world, and only his contract with Sorey and Lailah had kept him from growing sick because of it, or worse.

Here, though, he feels not even an ounce of it. Which immediately brings to mind the question- where...?

Once he's up and on his feet and staring out the nearest window - witnessing the state of the sky, what in the world - it takes him a while to shake off the shock. He feels like his head's been invaded- thoughts, understanding forced into it, making his head hurt. This is space. He doesn't know why he knows this, but he does. Space, a fleet of ships traveling the universe like a fleet of whales in the ocean, prisoners for entertainment...

What does it even mean?

Sorey. I need to find him. Forcing himself away from the glass, he wanders the hallways, drawn to his Shepherd like a lost sheep. He has to be here. This feeling is unmistakable.]

[BROADCAST: VIDEO]

-ink this is how it works? Where’s the part I talk into? Try the top corner, it's flashing. Do you know why? -well because it’s communicating, isn’t it? Don't look at me. Oh! No no, it’s working now. ...yup. Okay! Geez…

Wow, this is so cool! Can everybody really hear me? -oh man, we can make recordings with this! You know, instead of having to lug around parchment all the time? We absolutely have to bring this back home.

Like people need more reasons to fear the Shepherd.

-ah, right! Introductions! I’m Sorey. I’m supposed to be an Engineer? I’m not totally clear on everything involved in that, so please be patient with me! Um, and since it sounds like we’re all in the same boat- I mean, this might’ve been asked before but does anybody know who we can talk to if we really, really need to get back? It’s kind of an emergency. This seems like a kidnapping but we’re not in a cell or anything, so it’s not as bad as it could’ve been, I suppose.

But definitely! Any clarification on how to get back would be really, really helpful.

You should probably stop talking like you're with someone, Sorey. People will think you're more weird than you already are.

[Which had always been a little uncomfortable for everyone involved.] Maybe she'd be able to talk more about sublords and how the seraph pacts work. We hardly know anything about that too.

That's true... every time one of us entered into a pledge, it was when we didn't have much time to consider all the information first. It's not as if I regret it or anything, but there's a lot we didn't know ahead of time.

Sorey turns to Mikleo after the conversation has concluded with that Look on his face. He kind of wants to keep a lookout for this guy.]

You totally have. I just thought Edna was teasing you more than usual.

[Aside, to Mikleo:] Could be... [But he has the same doubts. Why Mikleo and not Lailah?

But as for Steven,] I'm glad you've got somebody you know. Are they taking care of you? Or someone else is?

I think Edna and Zaveid might've already known. Edna at least did, she was already prepared and everything. And she and Lailah knew each other.

[And Clay's just writing down notes over here, so give him a minute. The teasing makes him grin anyway, as it kind of reminds him of someone, and he keeps it up as he stops writing and pays attention again.]

I can't say we've run into dangerous monsters, but we did run into a lot of big game at the last planet they were at. They hunted for a lot of their food! I'm not much of a fighter, so I couldn't join in, but I did try to watch what I could.

[He's just. Kinda squeamish, so the actual killing of the animals soooorta made him wince a lot.]

You're right. Edna even had a divine instrument already.

[Kind of makes him wonder where and when she might have gotten it. But the others are much, much older than he and Sorey, so who really knows.]

[He snorts.]

Which just leaves you and me as the clueless ones. Well, and Rose. [Hands on his hips, Sorey casts another glance around the room.] I still don't understand how it could be just you and me here...

I can't imagine that the answer to that question is going to be easy to find.

[He ponders over the information that's been forced into their heads somehow, trying to make more sense of it all. It feels like there's something they're missing.

Then, it clicks-]

Are you carrying anything? Something you didn't have before we came here?

[Message received, and Mikleo nods.

Him too.]

[HUFF.]

Sorey could have helped with that. He's been hunting for his own food for years.

[Look, buddy, even you'd have been useful!]

[ Wow, that might be a lot of words for her take in immediately. Inhabiting the same body sounds a little creepy to her, but she's keeping those thoughts to herself. Thank goodness Teepo isn't here to blurt it out.

She repeats a more watered down version of what she just heard, for her own understanding and for them to clarify whether she's saying it incorrectly or not. ]

So when seraphim and humans inhabit the same body, they work together to... purify the mal- [ Pause. Slowly again: ] mal-e-vo-lence.

[...what.] Ah...Most ghosts have legs, Sorey...

[Is that world full of amputee ghosts my goodness...]

But I understand, I think. What's Resonance, exactly?

[WHADDYA MEAN 'EVEN YOU']

Oh yeah, we're used to fighting. Don't worry Clay! If anything like that comes along while we're together onto a planet, Mikleo and I can handle it.

...although, I don't have my sword. I might have to make a substitute.

Yup! Exactly.

Also, stronger seraphim can offer their blessing over certain regions of land. This usually protects the area, makes sure the weather stays normal and the crop is good, etcetera. In return, humans worship their lord seraph and give them strength. Cool, right?

[Ghosts with legs exist?? Trippy.]

Resonance is literally the way a human's spirit connects with the rest of the world- how they perceive it, whether they see what is true, or what is expected. Those with high resonance and hear, sometimes even see seraphim, and they can recognize supernatural phenomena for what they are.

Without resonance, their minds explain it away as just unusual acts of nature.

Seraph like that are known as the Lords of the Land.

[It's very cool.]

[Sorey blinks at the question and starts going through the various pouches on his belt. He'd noticed right away that his sword was gone, but given that this was probably a kidnapping he'd expected it. Finding his friends had taken immediate precedence after that.]

My copy of the Record, a couple gels, but- [Sorey slips a small rectangular box-like thing from his pocket, surprised. He's about to ask what it is when his newly-adapted mind helpfully supplies the word.] ...a communicator.

[That's... freaky. Mikleo leans in to get a better look at it.]

Why do we even know what that is?

[Automatically, he recognizes it as a way to contact others from great distance. He knows the functions and how to work them. He's literally never seen one before in his life.]

But there are also humans who choose to believe in and worship the seraphim even if they can't perceive them. [Father Breunor and Alisha, specifically. They believed Sorey long before they really knew he'd been telling the truth.] Not as many as there used to be, but.

I really don't know. [It doesn't bother Sorey as much as it bothers Mikleo, that much he can tell, but it's still unsettling.] ...should we try using it?

[Hmm. HMM. Maybe he can help with that.]

I've got a crewmate who's been making swords and stuff from the different materials she's found on the planets. I've never asked if I could take one before, so I'll have to double-check with her, but if I can get one off her hands, it'd be yours!
