A year, huh... [Jennifer looks distant and sounds a little sad.] How... [She hesitates.] If you've been here for a while, what kinds of things do you do to cope when you're really, really missing home? Because I've been thinking about my friends back home a lot lately, and having been the only person from my world here this entire time... [She trails off, and decides to just wait for responses.]

'How' would be a good way to put it. How the hell has a whole year passed, I mean.

[That face is painfully familiar, but he's not really sure if it'd be — well, a certain someone. After all, he's been around for months, so unless she's avoiding him because of... yeah. Well, okay, that'd be a decent reason. But he'll just test the waters and come to his own conclusion.]

I was in the last place for over a year, and it was... something, to realize how fast time goes when it feels like hours tick by at a mile an hour.

What kind of things have you ended up doing here, to take up time?

Mmhmm. It's a long time to be away from home... especially when you're used to being around people you know. Nobody else from my world has shown up.

["The last place". Once again, a person who'd been yanked here by Atroma instead of being sent home, apparently. Jennifer thought that would probably be much worse.]

Well, I've been able to keep doing my job, at least. I'm a doctor, and my augment gives my ship a medbay. So it's something, at least.

[He nods.]

Looks like I was upgraded to communications, myself.

It's not my usual occupation, but I'm not too bad at it. And I prefer a little bit of peace. This place is... really calm, for a ship fleet run by kidnappers.

Just another handy gift from Atroma- free knowledge. [This is said with a healthy dose of sarcasm.]

And it is, isn't it? Atroma seems pretty content to just let us run things on our own with minimal interference. Strange, for people who are allegedly producing a reality show.

Allegedly.

Kind of hard to decipher what's honesty and what's a bunch of crap, right?

It is. I've always been of the opinion that they're not as in control of things as they like us to believe they are, and their hands-off way of running the show means they're able to keep themselves in perfect control when they do talk to us. Because nobody's THAT good at acting, unless Atroma's representatives are brainwashed or something.

Brainwashing wouldn't surprise me. But then again, nothing usually does. Not completely anyway. I guess I kind of leave open room for just about anything in a universe where my world's rules don't apply...

They could be people made of kitchen utensils and I'd probably get over it pretty quick.

[She had to chuckle.]

Sentient kitchen utensils would make just as much sense as anything else, right? It would explain some of the things they do, too.

[He grins, but — oh! Manners. Come on, buddy, getting sloppy.]

I'm Jennifer. Dr. Keller in the infirmary, but Jennifer outside of it. I'm glad to meet you, too. Some pretty weird things have happened to me back home, so I'd not find it hard to believe anything that might happen here myself.

Oh, trust me, I get it. Boy do I get it. Anything happening is on par the course.

I've had plenty of time travel and universe hopping in my lifetime. Even before I was actually kidnapped out of mine. It's a pain, huh?

We had plenty of that back home, too, though I never experienced it firsthand- the rest of my teammates were the lucky ones. My boyfriend especially. He's a great astrophysicist, so he was always the one to push the button, so to speak, in case something went wrong.

Wait, no kidding? They hopped universes or time or something like that?

Yeah. By accident, but it did happen. And there was the time they met clones of themselves- that was fun.

Oh, yikes. I usually just meet monsters that transform into my face.

... Which is still -- weird. But you know. Normal business.

See, we don't have very many monsters- mostly humans, the occasional alien. And most of them have humanoid shapes.

Hey, you never know. You might have met supernatural beings without even knowing it. Back home, a lot of them blend in pretty damn well.

True enough- after all, if they live among humans, learning how to blend in is a necessity. There's no point in trying to hide if all you do is stick out like a sore thumb, and a lot of humans wouldn't know what to do with a nonhuman in their midst.
