Hey guys! I have a bit of a weird question for you today.

Did anyone by any chance stock up on apples before we left the Starlight? Or... apple puree, maybe? Or, um. Apple-anything-not-in-a-protein-cube? It's important. I promise.

I'd be willing to trade you credits or food from the Starstruck in exchange. We have a lot of dried and frozen meat. Like. A lot.

On an unrelated-but-not-really note...

Does anyone know how to make apple pie?

Oh. [Then it clicks.] Ohhhhh.

So it's like a sort of ... national dish then?

Nothing so grandiose as all that. But it is a family favourite -- among some families, at least. Am I correct in assuming this has something to do with Jim Barnes's absence?

[ since arriving here, she'd come to damn well associate the scent of apples and cinnamon and cooked crust with that wonderful man. ]

That's right.

I thought it would be nice to do something he would enjoy. You know, rather than being sad about it.

...Winter.

[ silently, peggy thinks to herself that winter ought to be sad about it -- but that stems from an understanding that the man needs to feel more and repress less. it's not a truth that ahsoka is privy to knowing, and so she doesn't fault the young woman her good intentions. ]

This recipe. It -- ah, goodness. [ don't mind her. she doesn't intend to be so affected by this; then again, she'd never suggested to anyone aboard her ship that she'd been quite close to jim barnes herself. ] It would be one he'd have enjoyed many times, when he was younger. It belonged to his dearest friend's mother. I'd like very much to help you in this endeavour.

Oh! I had no idea...

I just remembered it. From his-- um. The... dreams we encountered, a few months back. [The calibrations.]

There was an area that smelled like apple pie. There were good memories there. So I just thought...

Anyway. I really don't know anything about cooking. So I'll take all the help I can get.

Don't be too dismayed if it does little to jog Winter's memory. I imagine he'll be very grateful in his own quiet way. [ ... ] I'll be back aboard the Starstruck in an hour or so. Should we meet in the kitchen?

It wasn't really about jogging his memory. I just wanted to do something nice in Jim's honour. You know?

Sounds good to me. I'll be here.

[ -- her oblique warning seems to miss its target. perhaps (and peggy's learning this) ahsoka takes things more literally than they're intended. but it doesn't matter; the intention remains good. ]

I know -- [ and she doesn't sign off with any sort of concrete farewell.

but she does turn up, as promised, within about an hour and a half. peggy's wearing her leather jacket over blouse and trousers. it seems likely that she's returned back from somewhere -- the iskaulit, perhaps? -- without stopping by her own quarters first because she still has a gun and shoulder holster in place when she shrugs out of the jacket and drapes it over a kitchen chair. ]

I hope you weren't waiting long.

[Ahsoka turns and grins.] Nope!

[But then she gets distracted by Peggy's sidearm.]

What's that? Some kind of old-timey blaster?

Revolver. [ she pats the handle. ] Nearly an antique even by my standards, if I'm honest. Haggled for it back on that dust moon some stops ago. It's more a practice piece than a practical one.

[ if she has other weapons hidden away somewhere, then their ammunition is too precious. this old thing is good only for target-shooting at the budding gun range over on the iskaulit. ]

[Ahsoka, meanwhile, has been starting a veritable weapons collection on her person. The top of the knife that Nyssa gave her at Christmas sticks out of the top of her boot, her belt has been modified to carry a blaster that she picked up after saving up on the Starlight, and on the front of her belt sit new, very recent additions-- two white cylinders.

They aren't real lightsabers, of course. Just training ones. Not strong enough to cut through anything when turned on, just hot enough to give you a mean burn. When she wasn't working or training, Ahsoka spent practically all of her spare time and change on the Starlight hunting down the spare parts to make one. It doesn't matter that they're not quite the real deal. Having them there makes her feel better.

In any case, Ahsoka tilts her head at Peggy quizzically.]

What's a revolver?

[They haven't had rounds in guns in Ahsoka's universe for easily tens of thousands of years.]

[ oh, well. apple pie, she supposes, can wait. peggy hooks her fingers (red polish and all) around the gun's handle and pries it gently from its holster. it's of no make or precise model with which she's familiar, but its basic construction is exactly like any other revolver back home. it's large and a little clunky-looking. revolvers aren't rare things in the '40s, but this one has always struck her as being particularly crude. ]

So named because of its revolving cylinder, here in the centre. [ peggy knocks the piece against her palm and pushes its guts open. there shines the bottoms of six brassish-golden bullets. ] Six rounds a pop, if it's fully loaded. Slow to reload and the kickback's a nightmare. But it does its job.

[ she gives the cylinder a gentle spin. ]

[Ahsoka's eyes go wide as saucers for a second before her brow furrows and her expression turns comically confused.]

Wait-- are you for real?

What good is a blaster you only get six blasts with?

If you're doing it right, all you need is one.

[ but perhaps, given ahsoka's incredulity, it's best if she doesn't go on to profess a penchant for shotguns. there are (of course) options with larger magazines. ]

[Ahsoka just shakes her head.]

Even a tiny blaster that size back home's got at least fifty shots in it before you'd need to change the power pack. Have you considered upgrading...?

I can't say that's exactly an option, back where I come from. Such weapons don't exist. [ or they did and they were in the hands of hydra operatives. but that's another problem. ] I'm perfect comfortable with the guns the Atroma provide through any security augments here on board, but -- there's a comfort in the familiar, Ahsoka. Like I said, I don't own it for its practicality.

Oh. Um. Fair enough, I guess...

[It's the sort skeptical of answer that says "I'm still not convinced, but I'm willing to drop it."]

[ -- she can taste the skepticism on the air. might as well come clean, she supposed: ] Myself and two others had been working on a shooting range over on the Iskaulit. They're gone, now. Jim was one of them. Perhaps you know the other -- Natasha. Some people bake apple pies, Ahsoka. And others empty their six-shooters.

[ they all had their ways to salute the fallen. ]

... Oh.

[She understands a little better, now. Still--]

But-- where are you going to replace your shots way out here? They're not rechargable, right?

The advantage to older technologies, my dear, is that they aren't so complex that your average layman or blacksmith can't cobble together a box of bullets. It's all powder and metal. No precarious circuits to care for.

I see! Well, that makes sense.

Still-- circuits are pretty easy! I can teach you sometime, if you want.

-- How about we start with apple pie, hmm? [ it's not that she's disinterested. after all, peggy craves mastery in many things. but she knows better than to spread her expertise so thin by learning more than a few things at once. ]

[Ahsoka shrugs, happy to go along with it.]

Okay.

I'm looking forward to learning from your expertise!

By the way, I'm a complete beginner when it comes to things in the kitchen.

I confess, I'm no gourmet chef myself. But -- recipes are recipes, yes? [ directions. orders. ] We only need to follow what it says.

[ give her a moment while she pulls the document up on her device. ]
