[ After the "accident" (because Charles refuses to call it anything else), Charles has either been in the medical lab working on the plant and animal samples he had taken from the last planet and cataloging their DNA strands, logging them into his notes.

Otherwise, he's wandering around the Heron, reading his new 50 Shades book with avid interest.

[ Everyone missed their Captain, right? After about a week of radio silence, Winter's back on the Heron. Talk about awkward..

Nobody will have to worry about that metal arm, at least. Most of it is rusted, some all the way through, exposing the wiring and components. Which are also out of commission. Winter's not moving quite as stealthily, thanks to Wrath. He's sporting a bit of a limp from that particular engagement. So that's fun.

While he'll mostly stick to his quarters to avoid the inevitable, he can (on rare occasions) be found in the cargo bay or the kitchen, usually late enough most people are asleep. ]

[ Charles gives it a few days before he heads over to Winter's room, rapping his knuckles smartly on the door. ]

Winter. It's Charles.

[ If he's being honest with himself, Winter wasn't sure how to handle everything after what he did. A small portion of him considered transferring ships-- though what ship would take him?

He's not doing much when Charles knocks, just resting. Winter's still so damn exhausted, and he can't fathom why now. Not that it's anything new, he's always tired. Maybe he's just unused to being out of cryostasis while he heals..

He moves into a sitting position, calling out. ]

It's open.

[ Charles carefully opens the door so Winter could see him in full view before wheeling himself in and shutting it. Then he took a long look at Winter. ]

Good Lord, did you get any medical treatment?

[It takes a couple of days for Erik to fully confirm that Winter is back on the Heron. He waits until he can feel minute movements in the metal, indicating a presence exerting force on them. The locker opening, the door shutting. He doesn't go look; frankly, he doesn't want to.

But once it's confirmed, there are certain things that need to be said. And he's not going to be beaten to the punch. It has to be on his terms.

Erik walks down the hallway and stops in front of Winter's door. A reasonable person would knock, at this point. Erik, by contrast, makes a cutting gesture and slams the door open instead.]

[ He watches Charles come in, shrugging a shoulder. ]

Some. I'll heal.

[ Mostly. He should probably have someone look at his leg when the wariness calms down. He thinks he recalls coming across Charles on the Iskaulit... Winter looks him over briefly. ]

How badly did I hurt you?

I can get the medical kit. It wouldn't take long.

[ As for Winter's question. ]

A few fractured ribs, nothing too serious. I didn't think you'd remember.

It's fine. I've had worse.

[ Charles, don't you get it? He deserves this pain. ]

I know how to read a network post.

[ Firmly. ] Prop up that leg. I want to take a good look at it, worse or not. This isn't a competition.

Do you remember? You were . . . [ He pauses. ] not quite there.

[ At least he's feeling more like himself for having to resist the urge to roll his eyes? He grudgingly, though awkwardly moves a pillow under his leg to prop it up. ]

No. I was in the meditation room and then nothing.

[ He'll take that as a good sign as he critically examines Winter's leg with a wince. A real doctor needed to take a look at this. ]

I think a splint could help for now, but you need a doctor, Winter. I can have Hank come by and give you a proper diagnosis.

[ Winter's response made sense. The Winter soldier wasn't really a person, it was . . . a device, tied up in programming and protocols. ]

Then you clearly weren't the person who hurt me.

[ A reasonable person would knock, but the Heron is lacking in reasonable people, lately. He's not expecting the sudden noise or visitor, so Winter's reaction is purely defensive. His hand goes under his mattress, pulling out the knife he keeps there. The execution is a little sloppy, but he grips it firmly, standing.

It's just Erik, but the abrupt entrance has him on edge. ]

What is it?

I'll see one when everyone else is healed properly.

[ Aka: that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

As nice as it would be to say he's not the Winter Soldier, they're one in the same. No one can really have one without the other. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, carving out that piece of him wouldn't miraculously make things better. As easy as that would make things.. ]

I heard a voice..Before it happened.

[ Charles gives him a flat look. ]

As someone who has lost the use of his legs, I suggest you rethink that decision. Making yourself suffer isn't going to do anything, much less invoke the kind of divine justice you're looking for.

[ He pauses, pulling away briefly. ]

Yes. That would be me. I tried to bring your consciousness to the forefront of your mind. I'm afraid I didn't have much luck.

Sorry. [ He really didn't mean to make light of the situation, but he tends to go the self-depreciating route most times. ]

No, not you. A woman.

[ Though Charles saying that makes a little sense. ]

[ He nods curtly, accepting that. ]

A woman? [ Charles purses his lips. ] It might have been the Atroma. Wasn't one of them a woman?

[Takeshi comes to find Winter to assess him.

Yep, a little kid is coming to assess your danger levels right now. But more than that, he does want to see how you're doing; from what he can gather, you're not actually a bad guy. But he needs to verify. He needs to check. It's part of his job, isn't it? So when Winter makes one of his sparingly few trips to the kitchen, Takeshi's sitting at the table, watching him like a hawk, a bit serious for someone his age. Like he's waiting for the secret password before a top-secret conversation.]

What kinds of people drink coffee?

[He just wants to mostly make sure you talk, because talking seems to be an important thing for you, man.]

[His gaze flicks to the knife - and he laughs, short and sharp.]

Don't even start with me. Put it away before I put it through the ceiling. [At least it wasn't "put it through your head." He's still mad about what happened, but not to that extent. Erik steps inside the room, crossing his arms. The gesture is a little marred by the cast he's wearing on his left forearm, making it less than smooth. The fading bruises and healing gash on his forehead tell the rest of the story.

His tone is brisk.]

We're going to have a conversation.

Her voice sounded like Diamond. I'm pretty sure..

[ Really, how sure can he be when he can't even trust his own head not to flip out? ]

[ He gives Erik a briefly incredulous look. Then don't just barge in?? Winter at least puts the knife down on the bedside table. He doesn't have much right to act offended by having his space invaded with hostility.

He's the reason everything is so damn tense, anyway. ]

Okay. You first.

[ Clearly, Erik has a thing or two to say. ]

[ Takeshi is a bit of a surprise, especially this late. Don't kids have a bedtime.. He spots the kid as soon as he enters the kitchen, but busies himself by making coffee. ]

Adults.. People who don't want to sleep.

[ Takeshi, thankfully, doesn't look hurt. He doesn't need another hurt kid on his conscience. ]

[ Padmé knocks lightly on the lab door. She's carrying a cup of tea and a plate of some approximation of scones. ]

Charles?

[ He glances upward, momentarily distracted before smiling. ]

Oh, hello Padme. Please, come in. Can I help you with anything?

[ His lip curls in distaste. ]

That was my take on it as well.
