I might have accidentally torn the door off of the washer, but in my defense, my strength was coming back very erratically.

[Beverly''s eyebrows go up.]

You tore of the door of the washer?

It was an accident and I fixed it.

[She gives a little chuckle.]

Oh, I'm not doubting you - I just don't understand how you did that.

I have superpowers. I'm not from Earth, and the yellow sun imbues me with enhanced features.

[She shakes her head. More strange science.]

I don't understand how?

It's still a bit of a mystery... but different things store sunlight and release them as energy all the time, like plants?

I'm probably not a plant but it's hard to tell.

[Beverly laughs.]

No, I suspect you aren't. May I ask what your home planet is though?

It was called Krypton.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to...

You couldn't have known. It was awhile back now, even for me. My cousin and I were sent to Earth before it happened.

Still... I am sorry. I know a little bit about what it's like to lose your home at a young age.

[She holds out a hand.]

[Beverly glosses over the details of the plague that wiped out most of Arvada - no one needs to see that, nor does she particularly want to remember it herself. She's long come to terms with the suffering she saw as a child, but that does not mean she wishes to linger on it.

Instead, she shows Kara a ship, a small Starfleet transport vessel, slowly coming out of orbit over a planet that looks very much like Earth - green land, white clouds, and blue ocean. From space, it looks perfectly peaceful and safe, belying the devastation the disease left in its wake. Beverly presses her face to the window as Arvada grows smaller and smaller. It's all she's known of home in her short life - Copernicus City, where she was born, is but a hazy memory of her parents, a few rooms in their house, the family cat. Arvada is where Nana brought her to start fresh and now they have to leave. An older woman's hand rests on her shoulder and Beverly turns to face her. Nana. Her grandmother looks tired and so much older than she used to.

It'll be all right, Beverly.

But where are we going to go? Even in memory, Beverly's voice sounds so small and young and scared.

We'll find a new home, don't you worry. Starfleet will help us. What matters is that we're together.Nana smiles softly. Wherever you are is home to me. ]

[ Kara thought she'd be prepared for this, but it was a silly fantasy. It's not only her own experience bleeding through, but the devastation that anyone else had to experience something like this. The unique combination of looking back on a planet and being sent away, knowing it's the last time. She doesn't want to make this about her but she can't help it when tears start rolling down her face. She needs a moment to compose herself enough to speak, but when she does, she looks away and down, her voice creaky ]

[Beverly tears up as well, in sympathy and in some amount of guilt, for drawing out such feelings in Kara. She gives her hand a gentle squeeze.]

My parents died when I was young, so Nana was the one who raised me - and the one who inspired me to become a doctor.

She seemed very kind. And loving.

She was - and the strongest person I ever knew.

She'd have to be. I'm glad you had her.

Me too. I can't even imagine who I'd be today without her.

[And yet... there was so much Beverly didn't know about Felisa. After everything that happened with Ronin, well... her feelings about her grandmother are much more complicated now.]
