I'm not with the crew. [He hesitates a moment, because dishonesty does not come naturally to him and while he isn't lying, this isn't the whole truth either.] I mean to say, I've gone to live on the planet instead. But I already did the engineering bit. You hear that? [He knocks on the walls and allows a moment for them to take in the humming of the ship's engines. There was none of that barely detectable and minute imperfections that he'd heard when he arrived a week ago.] Should do just fine, if you fancy staying.

[This was a very considerate thing for him to do, he thought. She could stay and probably not die from the ship's engines blowing up. Gendry was a really cool guy sometimes.]

[ that's a lot at once. what does she address? ]

The ship seems in great order, so thank you for that. I'm not great with engineering, myself.

[bullhorned]

It's this. [He taps the back of his neck, where the augment is supposed to be.] I'd never heard of space before last week.

[Which should be reassuring.]

[ this is the least reassuring thing she has ever heard and she has heard a lot of suspect things in her life. every time she thinks she's adjusting to the fleet, shit like this happens. help. ]

I'm so glad to know that our captors' technology works, in that case.

Mm. [He can tell what she's thinking and not because he's telepathic or particularly empathetic. He too does not feel entirely safe on this ship either because between his previous training and the augment, he had every reason to not trust this ship at all.] Might be you should go to the planet instead. It's decent enough, if you can avoid all the hugging.

[ barriss clears her throat, finally managing to get the overwhelming concern his words had caused her under control. she doesn't want to come off as too rude. ]

Yes, good idea. I'll probably wind up exploring, at least. I'm not much for hugging but maybe the locals will understand.

[Darkly and perhaps ominously.] They won't. I've tried. But just as you tell one of them to bugger off, some other one will come up and want to hold your hand.

[It's a struggle! A struggle for very survival. Gendry has seen things. Things he can't forget.]

How unpleasant. Hopefully I can be persuasive enough to survive with some dignity. I've heard there's some sort of... touch telepathy involved with them, right?

When they've touched you so far, has it just been feelings you swapped with them, or were there thoughts and memories too?

Bit of both. I ain't thought to speculate on it. Nothing about it is natural.

[He didn't want to go feeling other people's feelings and thinking their thoughts. It was a struggle enough dealing with his own, without having to deal with everyone else's.]

On the contrary, it's probably perfectly natural for them. Some sort of evolutionary advantage- But I assume it's overwhelming for outsiders such as yourself. I doubt I'll handle it much better.

Right. For them. [He's not entirely sympathetic to that idea, but he does come from the sort of place where it's considered practical and nearly obligatory to declare war on anyone too different. The lack of war on the planet is itself suspicious.] I've managed to handle it though.

[Just in case she thought being overwhelmed somehow devalued him as a man. Because it didn't. He had it completely handled.]

I'm a smith. Wouldn't be much of one if I was small and wiry. [Which... he meant no offense to any small and wiry people that might be about.]

[ the arguably small and wiry alien in front of him gives a smile. ]

I meant sturdy in character. Physical size doesn't always have much to do with strength.

Oh. [He hadn't really thought much about his own character. Sturdy?] It helps, though.

[He's pretty sure no one is going to look at Gregor Clegane and think of him as a pushover.]

But I didn't mean to keep you so long, Gendry. [ a polite nod from her, although she's enjoyed meeting him. stretching it out might have her overstaying her welcome, so to speak. ] Enjoy your time planetside.

[He nods, relieved to be done with this whole business of introductions.]

[Space. Ships. Suspect engineering. It's nothing he wants to do with. So without any physical contact, he makes his way on towards the shuttle to go planetside. Maybe he'll see her in a month or so when the Atroma drag him back on board.]
