There goes that plan. [A dramatic sigh.]

Don't eat him, anyway. I might be complaining a lot but I do still love him.

[Bigby keeps his trap shut. He has opinions on love. Not pleasant ones. Love is stupid. Love gets people killed and makes them lose all perspective.]

I don't know. We've been through a lot together. He genuinely cares for me, which is absolutely crazy of him, but it is what it is.

[Love is one of those weird things that's impossible to explain, especially when you're a cynical person.]

[Bigby still thinks she's insane.

Love is what he sees when Beast and Beauty look at each other. They're dumb, but they're dumb and in love and have been for hundreds upon hundreds of years, with eyes for nothing but each other.]

Caring doesn't have to be love.

[Snow cares about him, but it's not love. He cares about most of his idiot Fables, but it isn't love.]

[She'd like that kind of love, though she really isn't sure she's capable of it, let alone Monty too.]

No, but it's part of it. And for me that's particularly important, because very few people care about me and vice versa.

I frequently am human, especially back home. But here I have the luxury of being myself.

[Bigby cracks out his spine.]

[Bigby takes a few moments to fold himself back into his human skin. Slightly smaller than modern average, compact, well proportioned. Not a mark, bar a pale, silvery crescent on his left thigh.

He shrugs.]

So. That's it. What I have to wear most of the time, pretending to be human.

[And he's so, incredibly human to sight and sound. To scent, though. Scent still screams what he is. Predator. North Wind. Fear manifest.]

[She looks him up and down, not bothering to switch over to her human form. He hasn't asked and he'll probably see it eventually, so it isn't that important.]

How can you do that, exactly?

Lycanthropy cursed knife. Gave me the ability to shift into a man.

[As if he hadn't been ignoring his own innate shapeshifting abilities for centuries.]

Totenkinder dragged it up form somewhere to use on me.

How very ironic. You were able to do this in your own world, then? That is lucky, I never had that luxury.

Shapeshift? No. Not in the Homelands. When I moved to the Mundy world, I spent a century or so living in Carpathians, then Snow and Feathertop approached me with the offer to join the community. They gave me the ability to be human, I stayed human and acted as the Sheriff.

[He moves forward, as he steps through the shadows, his eyes flare yellow to let him keep seeing. He sits himself down on the ground and offers out a hand to her to sniff.]

Why on earth did they want you to be Sheriff?

[There's a slight pause.]

No offense, of course. But you wouldn't be my first choice.
