[ it's probably unfortunate that the network is left open and broadcasting, because tadashi awakes with a jolt and a gasp and sits up fast in his bunk on the marsiva. he isn't sure where he is, but he knows this wasn't where he was, and it's clear there's some mental scrambling going on as he desperately tries to slot in place the very few pieces of the puzzle he has. ]

Professor Callaghan?

[ had something happened? was this the hospital? ]

Hiro? Guys - what's going on?

[ ACTION: ]

[ and until the shuffle, tadashi will be found... pretty much investigating everything he can about the marsiva. he might not have an engineer augment, but he still finds it all pretty ridiculously fascinating. if he's not too absorbed into whatever he's doing, he's equally likely to flag any friendly-looking faces down.

might as well get to know his fellow... space... travelers, right? (wow, that was gonna take some getting used to.) ]

[He's just scrolling through, taking a break from his projects, seeing what the network is up to, maybe someone's found something out about that extra ship--]

["Professor Callaghan?"]

[There's a moment here, where his brain stops. Those two words, that voice, they're all the world has for him. But when he hears his own name, his chest feels like it might explode. It's hard to breathe. He feels like he's been punched right in the solar plexus.

[It's not like he hasn't thought of how this could happen. It's not like it hasn't been at the back of his mind for weeks now, digging at him and poking and prodding and carving its way into the things he does in his daily life, usually in the form of minutes lost spacing out, or stupid little mistakes when he's working. But this isn't in his head.]

[... Holy crap. This isn't in his head.]

[He doesn't even know how he finds the button to turn the video feed on, and his voice doesn't really sound like his to him when he yells suddenly with a voice that isn't quite ready to be used. Needless to say, it cracks.]

Tadashi!!

[ okay, that's hiro's voice, and maybe it's loud and cracking but it brings a cascade of relief on his face anyway. they're not on campus anymore, and he still has no idea what's going on, but all of that matters less now that he's sure that hiro is alright and somewhere nearby.

he drags his fingers through his hair, bewildered and weirdly stiff. ]

Hey. Where am I? Where are you? [ his hand pauses to rest at the back of his own neck, and he adds with a baffled half smile: ] Where's my hat?

[ "Hiro"? Does this guy know Hiro?

They do look awfully similar ... ]

You're in space. Probably not where you were hoping to end up, but here we are.

[Give him a minute. Tadashi, you'll be noticing that there is some knowledge you have that you should not have, like how to fuckin' work this communicator that you've never seen before in your life.

Hiro, meanwhile, stares at the screen with wild eyes, mouth open like he wants to say something--but then tears start welling up, and he ducks his head down to his knees just as they start to spill over, before he starts crying too hard in view of the camera. The video feed is shaking in his unstable hands, but Tadashi can see behind him now, and that... is some pretty basic sci-fi movie set shit. Certainly nowhere he'll recognize as "home".]

... You're Hiro's brother.

[He didn't know Hiro had a brother, but between the resemblance and Hiro's video reaction, the pieces are very, very easy to put together. He's been there, or somewhere very like there.]

[a very soft-spoken, whispery girl shows up on one of the screens to respond...]

Hiro? Do you mean Hiro Hamada?

[ it's true: he does know how to work this thing, and everything he sees behind hiro is both alien and somehow familiar at the same time. it's an impressive amount of cognitive dissonance to be struck with all at once, and it's not at all helped by hiro's reaction.

the smile falls from his face immediately, replaced with something that's a weird mixture of anger and fear and fierce protectiveness, and he grips the communicator a little too hard. ]

Where are you? What's wrong? Hiro, are you hurt?

[ Steffa had been half-napping. "Had been" being the operative words, because when Hiro yelled, she tried to get up really quickly and ended up more on the floor than able to help if someone was in trouble.

By the time she re-oriented herself, Hiro was just starting to cry, and that's... not good, right?

Why is Hiro shouting and crying? ]

Hiro? [ she sits within arms reach, looking concerned ] Hiro, are you all right?

Yeah.

[ he's trying not to let himself be a little shaken by hiro's reaction, but it's hard to go into Big Brother - to see hiro in what is clearly a lot of pain - and to be powerless to do anything about it.

there's a lot of adrenaline flowing, and tadashi has no idea what to do with any of it. ]

You seem to be... taking it well.

Older. In case that wasn't obvious.

[ he's struggling here to inject a little bit of levity into things, because he's at a loss otherwise. ]

You know him?

Yeah. [ this is where the joke would go if he weren't still on extreme edge from his conversation with hiro: 'you know him? short guy, robotics genius, ego as big as his hair?' the remarks lie dead on his tongue right now, though. ] He's my brother.

[he's shaking, holding his breath to keep from sobbing, and he refuses to stop holding the communicator. He swallows several times, and his voice comes out anything but even.]

Tadashi... He's here.

[aren't you glad he told you about this two days ago because you're the only one he told.]

I've been here awhile.

[ And she's been in this type of situation before, but that's a whole other story for hopefully never. Either way, she remembers what it's like to be new ...

And she knows if this guy is anything like Hiro, he's going to want information ]

The gist is, we're on a reality show. The more interesting you are, the more your ratings go up, the more you get paid. They say if your ratings are good enough you'll get to go back home, but we have yet to see if they'd make good on their word or not.

We're friends.

Hi, I'm Tim.

[ Steffa gasps, then immediately scoots closer to wrap him in a tight hug ]

Oh, Maker.

[ So many hair pets, Hiro. SO MANY. ]

This is good, though, right?

So why would they bring me?

[ tadashi isn't quite lashing out - there's traditionally more anger associated with something like that. it's more exasperation, and the fact that he feels bristly and raw, like a cat aggressively rubbed against the grain of its fur. ]

I build robots. Nurse-bots.

[ as if this is the most boring possible thing in the world. he follows it up with: ]

I ride a moped!

[ why would a space reality show kidnap him?? ]

Tadashi.

[ oh god. this comes out way worse than tadashi means it to. he's under a lot of stress right now, forgive him, because the confusion in his voice is real: ]

Hiro made friends?

Trust me, it's much weirder that I made friends.

We're both tech geeks.

I'd say the most likely reason is your relation to Hiro, actually.

[ Family reuniting is sure to up the ratings, after all, and if the other comments are any indication ... ]

Not that that doesn't sound helpful. A lot of us are from places and times where robots aren't really a thing.

[ But anyways ... that information probably isn't as important as the following. Her expression is a bit more gentle, now, and fond -- it's clear she cares about the kid: ]

Don't worry. We've been taking good care of him.

Yeah? He got it all from me.

[ tadashi knows that hiro outclasses him and his little smile says as much. he doesn't really seem bothered by the fact, though. ]

[ tadashi takes a deep breath, even as something else in him seems to deflate. well, if hiro's here - ]

Someone has to.

[ it's not meant to imply that hiro can't take care of himself, but looking after hiro is what he does, and if he's not been there to do it? he's just glad that the spot hasn't been unfulfilled. ]
