Hey I've got a question: Who else has the personnel augment? What do you do with it? Are we really meant to act like counsellors? Do you act as your ship's therapists? Or do you just really like the nice room you get? What do you do with the nice room? I turned mine into a blanket fort. Should I post a sign saying THE DOCTOR IS |IN|

[Actually, it hasn't been a blanket fort in months now, but psh. IT IS IN SPIRIT, OKAY.]

This is obviously a very important and singular question. Less important: do you know anything about souls? Know any soul magic?

Hey! I have a personnel augment. I'm not sure I work as a counsellor in any official capacity but I try to help people out when I can. Mostly Winn uses my office for his workshop.

You should definitely post a sign.

I can't say I'm surprised to see you asking about souls.

[That's vague, perhaps even by his usual standards—he's been sparse, of course, not necessarily in the sense that he leaves often, but he does a lot of nesting inside his own quarters. He has never been unkind to or curt with Katie in passing, but that's how he keeps it: in passing.

He really isn't surprised, though. She's been one of the most fascinating and unsettling beings he has ever felt. He's just elected to keep his mouth shut.]

[She switches to video to match. It's only polite; her accent is mid-west British and she's a cheerful sort.]

it is not called soul magic where i am from, but rather falls under a form of forbidden blood magic. i have never tried to cast it, but i have had it cast upon me

i know more than i should. in theory, i can cast some spells. it depends upon the spell itself

I have an exam with some very difficult questions coming up.

[A blatant lie as a response probably won't help with that suspicion, huh.]

[Katie has a habit of being very, uh. Obtuse. And oh, damn. Forbidden blood magic raises all sorts of alarms. She bites her lip, considering options before she responds.]

Are you cursed, then? Or was it a temporary spell? How much do you know about souls? Can you perceive them?

i was brought back to life. the mage who cast the spell sacrificed a piece of his soul to do it. it still remains, but i cannot sense the magic itself to know how it works or what is left

[the damned idiot, she wants to add. It still hurt to think about, like it had been a betrayal. And then he'd gone and died, because he had sacrificed far more than any of them had realized]

souls, in a very general sense, are required teaching. where i am from they are a separate entity that remains after death, or moves on to the next world, depending on beliefs and all that rot

i have also had my soul shattered, in another world, and had to piece it back together

so i know a bit

i have a fish that really likes it too so she hangs out with me!!

How difficult was it, to piece back together your soul? Were there complications?

I shall make sure to keep my cat at home. She finds fish very tasty.

She used to be white, but she liked delving in chimneys so much she's become completely black. Like a piece of licorice! That's what I call her, anyway. Very friendly. She'd like your hair.

myself and others had to compete in order to earn back the pieces. oftentimes, the competitions were deadly - though they would bring us back at the end of it. so it was rather difficult, but i have not experienced any complications that i can tell

Well, she can tell the story while twisting the facts just enough it counts as a lie, so--]

I died once. My soul tried to leave and failed and broke into two pieces. To put me back together again, a friend took the brighter half and carried it within his own soul while he hunted for the other half. Unfortunately our souls got a little tangled in the process.

[ they're well-matched, then, with her cheery california accent ]

He's an inventor, but he also does other crafty things as well.
