although she puts forward many smiles and friendly greetings, it's obvious that something's not right. when asked, of course, she owns up to it: clint's gone. but she promises that's not a big deal. it's not like it's the first time he's gone mia.
some afternoons, she lays on the shuttle bay floor after a particularly strenuous workout. lucky sits curled up against her side, head snuggled on kate's hip. when she thinks they're alone, she whispers soft assurances to the dog -- reminding him that she'll look after him, now, and it'll be just like california. you'd like california, she promises, even if the pizza sucks.
in other moments, she can be found carting laundry through the halls back to her bunk. mostly, she's sorting through some potential formal outfits. however, nothing seems to pass muster. a passerby might catch her tossing aside a skirt or a pair of shoes, grumbling aloud that nothing has the right je ne sais quoi for the upcoming ball.
or visitors and crewmates can come looking for her with a purpose. she won't be difficult to find.

Hey, Kate, you in?

Down here. [ her hair is done up in a messy bun, and her style for the day is casual. but that's never been anything strange or rare for her. ] I didn't know you were coming by.

I can come back if it's a bad time. Jarvis just made some cookies and for once in my life I thought I'd share.

Lucky, meet Mon-El. Mon-El? This is Lucky. He's not just my dog friend, he's now my best friend. [ she digs her fingers gently, affectionately into the scruff at lucky's neck. ] Aren't you, my handsome boy? Yeah you are.
You saw nothing.
i saw everything!!
Clint. [ she doesn't go overboard discussing the man, but it's clear the guy means a lot to her in their own twisted, dysfunctional way. ] He's gone. Back home. Good for him, I guess.
sob!
oh look i have hug icons now just in time

But she pays attention.
She knows when Clint leaves. And she can guess who'd be affected by something like this. She stops by the Blameless after a few days not seeing Kate out. This Clint might not be her Clint, but she'd spent enough time with him to see her Clint in him. Her Clint would have definitely mentored a girl like her too.]
Have some of that coffee for a guest?
[From the door, without preamble.]

and then, after a moment, the tension builds once more. ]
I can. Yeah. [ she nods her head towards the table. ] I think I know why you're here.

[He isn't sure what is the right thing to say here but he will at least... take the skirt off his face...]

Sorry -- [ she apologizes with a furrow of her brow. and, noticing his hair had gotten a little mussed in the process, she reaches up as though to coax some shape back into his white bangs. ]
Having a minor wardrobe meltdown, I think.
no subject
[An honest accident! He takes a quick look around the room - his tidy self doesn't like what he sees, but he makes no show of it. He then turns to her again with curiosity and maybe a bit of confusion. While he did buy some comfortable clothes in the asteroid, his own wardrobe is small - and well behaved, apparently.]
I can see the meltdown. I think your wardrobe is winning this fight.

well, not quite. he's actually living the life of james bond's tech guy but it's the closest he can get. working on spy gear for the upcoming ball; those seem to concern him more than formal clothes ( which he doesn't own ).
he's more than a bit concerned about barry and iris, he's way more than a bit concerned about kate.
which means digging under his bed for his giant bag of twizzlers won at the creepy underwater world.
he approaches her bunk and shoves only the bag through the door. ]
I've come bearing gifts.

[ he wraps an arm around her, squeezes her shoulders. ]
No way anything is better than rainbow Twizzlers. Look at them, they're excited to see you.
[ he doesn't quite addresses the matter at hand, not openly, anyway. he remembers how he was after Caitlin left. The last thing he wanted to do was to talk about it. ]

he wakes up early and can't seem to stay in bed, so he decides to go pick kate up - with two cups of coffee and a humble breakfast he nicked from the hotel he and kitty stayed in that night. he knocks on the wall as he enters the kitchen, to announce his presence. ]
Hey - I come bearing pre-yoga co -- ffee. [ well, maybe he just wasn't early enough. ]

Winn. [ she turns on a (bare) heel and looks...sheepish? it's unlike kate to be so off the ball. ] You really shouldn't have.
[ but ten to one, that coffee is better than her coffee. so she doesn't hesitate before taking a cup. ]
no subject
Least I can do - [ he frowns lightly at that sheepish look; it feels so foreign on kate. something's wrong, he can feel it in his gut. he watches her for a moment with the coffee, before venturing - ]
Kate - are you okay?

oh look i have one of these now.
I need to get me one too

The floor of the shuttle bay is not where she'd expected to see not only Kate but Lucky. Umbra is not at Luna's side today, she's already dropped him off to Noctis. She has to blink a few times, before she moves closer to simply crouch down next to the other woman. She's been talking to Lucky, although she can't quite make out what Kate was saying to him. ]
Good afternoon, Kate... are you alright?
no subject
she puts on a diluted smile. ]
I've been better. [ lucky shuffles into a sitting position, tongue lolling -- as though he doesn't yet realize what's happened. ] But I've also been worse.
no subject
I can see that... [ Reaching out, she gives Lucky a light pat of greeting... he's just as adorable as ever, and she can't help herself. ] I do not wish to pry, but... is there anything I can do to help you feel better? We could talk, if you'd like... or I can go and get you something to eat or drink. Anything.
