Karman steps closer and plucks the otter from the air before the Pull can wear off and drop the poor thing to the ground. Once in his arms, however, Shepard can't help petting the thing a little, especially under the chin.]
Seems well enough behaved now.
[He looked up to Kirk with a small smile.]
I hope it wasn't damaged.

[ Just rewarding bad behavior right there, Shepard. ]
They're supposedly pets around these parts. And it's natural defense is looking cute.
[ He can't deny they are, but like earth otters, they seem prone to mischief. ]
No, it looks okay. I don't think he managed to get the box open.
[ He tucked the bit inside his pocket. ]
Thanks for the assist. I'm Kirk. I'd shake your hand, but yours seem full of otter.

It's working.
[Still, he puts the otter back on the ground to let it do as it pleased. He wasn't interested in having a pet, he wasn't used to having the time to take care of one and he doubted he'd even know what to do with it, so keeping it wasn't an option. Besides, it probably belonged to someone else.]
There. [He offered his hand.]
Shepard. A pleasure to meet you, Kirk.

[ Kirk grasped the offered hand and shook - a firm grip, but not crushing. ]
Yeah, pleasure to meet you too. Figure I owe you a beer now too, for getting me out of that slippery situation.
no subject
Well, I don't know if I can turn down an offer like that. Are you also on the fleet, Kirk?
no subject
Ah yeah, I am. Captain of the Tourist, actually, for what it's worth. Trying to get some shopping done before I take a real vacation while I can, you know?
What about you? Besides saving unsuspecting drifters from otters.

I can't let a new place pass by without exploring as much of it as I can, goes against my nature. I figure I've got some ground to cover before shoreleave is up.
no subject
I'm with you there. The Fleet has a lot of cons, but getting to see new places isn't one of them. Well. Mostly. There have been some duds.
[ Like CANNIBALS but he's trying to avoid bringing up those particular memories. ]
I just wish it wasn't quite so cold. Ice planets are my least favorite.
no subject
You sound like one of my good friends from home. [His brother, more like. God he missed Garrus all of a sudden.] He hated whenever our missions took us to cold places. I never got a chance to go to the surface of his homeplanet, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was more on the tropical side of things.
As for me, I come from Chicago originally, I'll take cold over hot any day.

Hey we were practically neighbors. I grew up in Riverside, Iowa. Which the winters there are fine. I honestly think I started disliking them when my first officer marooned me on one, and I was nearly eaten by at least two different very carnivorous and aggressive animals.
I moved to San Fran when I got into Star Fleet and went to the Academy. Liked their weather a lot better.
no subject
I never got to spend a lot of time outside of Chicago and Vancouver when I was on Earth, but I always wanted to visit California.
[A brief pause.]
...I think I hitchhiked to Iowa once. If I remember right, I got to the edge of Ceder Rapids...Eld-something or other. But I was young, I got cold feet and started walking back until someone took pity on me.

Man, over a year? Spock didn't like me, but his dislike didn't last quite that long!
[ He tilted his head. ]
Are you not human, Shepherd?
[ He doesn't sound horrified or even surprised, just curious. ]
Oh man. Well, I don't blame you. Iowa really doesn't have all that much to offer - a lot if it is farm land in my time. Which is important, but exciting? Not so much.
no subject
No, I'm human. Mostly. I was born human, if you want to split hairs, it'd have to be put at a percentage these days.
But that wasn't what I meant. More along the lines of the fact The Normandy wasn't a usual ship. I never quite made it to the 'Captain' title, but she was my ship and I commanded her. For the last year or so, my XO wasn't one person, but more like two that shared the role without the actual title themselves. Dr. Liara T'Soni is an Asari from Thessia. Major Kaiden Alenko is human.
no subject
[ Kirk listened, and while he seemed surprised it was born from curiosity and more questions popping up rather than alarm. He knew a bit of Shepherd's world from Kaidan, but they hadn't gone to in depth in all honesty. ]
Percentages, eh? I can understand that, somewhat. Do you mind if I ask what the other DNA is?
[ Shepherd didn't have to answer, obviously. He would respect if he preferred not to. ]
Haha, you and I are a bit more alike than I thought. I have an official XO, but I might as well have a second, even though he's officially my CMO. Spock, from Vulcan - half human, half Vulcan. And Leonard Bones McCoy, very human and very southern.
Do you ever get them both yelling at you at once and get really scared when they agree, or do yours get along fairly well?
[ Not that Spock and Bones did not get along, just their relationship was... a contentious one, but in a good way. A healthy way. ]
