[Not long ago she’d been considering the best way to handle Winn’s birthday now that he’s gone and all. She considered enlisting a close friend or two to be on duty for support or distractions or just barricading herself in her room and feeling it and dealing with that. In the end she went with booze. Lots and lots of booze.

When she turns the feed on she’s lying down on a series of three chairs, holding the communicator above her head.]

Did I ever tell you about the time I was in Marina—the underwater prison place—and this tiny alien or robot or possibly dog man thing took over and made it rain fruit punch and then made us dance in a dance marathon and if we didn’t he was going to put us in a room with a moose. And I’m not drunk! [She laughs like she just said something very funny.]

No, no, I mean I am drunk but it’s also true. It was a very strange place. Did you know you had to get a wristband if you wanted to have sex with someone? Yeah. It was like being at a bar and wanting drink. [Speaking of wanting to drink. She looks around for her bottle and then lifts herself up enough to achieve drinking.] Oh! And then it was like enforced monogamy where you could only be with your band partner.

Wristband. Not like music band. You didn’t have to have sex with the person you played the flute with. [More laughing.]

What was I…? Oh, yeah, do you know I haven’t kissed anyone in moooonths? Yeah. Like May. May 10th. [Winn disappeared May 11.] In the prison you couldn’t do that because every two months—if they were months—they would send out these mistletoe robots that would make you kiss someone or lots of someones. Usually lots of someones. They had shrinking forcefields and confetti. I had to kiss a guy without lips once. Did I mention it was a weird place?

So...they essentially made you marry someone if you wanted to bed them? But then they made sure you were kissing someone every few months anyway? Seems like they wanted you to stray.

I never liked calling it that. [Points at him, the video, the ceiling, something.] Some people called it getting prison married. And it kind of was, but it wasn't too you know? [Of course he must know. She's making so much sense.]

And that's sad. A decade is a long time. I can't even imagine a decade. It's a lot of time to imagine all at once.

[ oh, hello. she doesn't talk with you much, kitty, but tonight seems like a worthwhile conversation. careful and cautious and heartfelt. ]

[Now, why did you have to go and do a thing like that? She closes her eyes because emotions are all way too close to the surface right now. Hell, they are the surface.]

It's not supposed to be a sad broadcast. If it was a sad broadcast I would have talked about how I got him a present for Christmas and one for his birthday. About how they're just going to sit in my room with all his other things like me.

A scrapbook to catch him up on what he's missed. Pictures of his friends. Trying to find really creative ways of talking about cannibals without making it sound bad. And then the planet's stained glass was pretty so I found someone to make a Princess Bride stained glass piece. Except instead of them it's me and Winn. We watched that movie a lot.

[ a pause. ]

It always seemed to me to be the sort of film he'd watch again and again even if it wasn't practically the only thing available.

Yeah. It was. He was so...good. [In every way she can think of and some she can't because she's too drunk for it.]

The Atroma gave me my old uniform like that's what I want from them. [She wants Winn back.]

It seems like a very strange way of allowing for a little fun. Were you stuck with that same person, or could you change to another and get a different...band?

[Okay. So first before he deals with any of that other insanity Vash looks at the camera with an amused smile.]

The Lollipop of course. It's a good ship.

Well, see, they kept changing the rules. At first you just couldn't be with anyone and if you did the thing they would announce your names to everyone the next day saying you broke the rules and that you were getting punished. They put shock collars on you so if you touched anyone for any reason BUUUUUUZZZZZZZZZZZ!

It hurt. A lot. [Does that mean she broke this rule and got a shock collar? Yes, yes, it does.]

But yeah, later you could change partners with a waiting period.

[Just give him a moment to contemplate all of that. ]

...If I ever try to suggest this place is truly terrible, I'm giving you permission to remind me of this conversation to put some things into perspective for me. That's awful. Punishing people for having feelings.

It was more of a distraction at the time than feelings, but I'm with you. They sucked. [It was a distraction from the feelings she was having about someone else. Her husband who murdered her and all.]

Well, oui, I was trying to be more subtle about it. But yes, more a distraction.

[Because who brings feelings into sex? Who DOES that???]

Still, unfair it was denied the way it was.

Their gifts are so often two-edged. [ there's no denying that. ] But yours sound like they would have been lovely. I'm sorry he didn't get to see the scrapbook.

It can be both. [And sometimes she just likes the feeling of connecting to Winn when she puts it together. It's kind of cathartic, but the more time that goes by the more she wonders if it's more harmful than helpful. Or maybe it's the reason this is only her first drunk dial since he's been gone and not her seventh or seventeenth.]

[People who end up on the network eight months after the love of their life disappeared to be publicly drunk because it's his birthday?]
