[ On Asgard, all knives had decent craftmanship. That's what he gets for assuming the rest of the universe would have that same level of expertise. He puts one away with a frown. ]

At any rate, I only need them for a while until I can forge my own.

[ Carl tilts his head, considering Loki for a moment. He reaches down and pulls his own knife from its holster on his leg and offers it. ]

Until you can make your own? I have a spare on the ship. [ God of Mischief or not, he's willing to have a little faith. ]

[ Loki blinks, completely caught off guard before tentatively reaching for the knife. ]

[ Carl nods in return. ]

Everybody should have some sort of weapon with a place like this.

I have my powers. But I'm not so foolish to rely solely on those.

And I know how to use a gun, but it's good to have more than one way to defend.

[ Especially when you are a string bean. ]

[ He nods slowly. ]

Precisely. And I have always had them — until recently.

I know one doesn't do as much good, but I'll watch your back.

[ They may not be crew, but they're all in the Fleet together, and that's just as good. Loki is a decent guy trying to be better. ]

[ "Why not" isn't a suitable reason for Loki whose self-esteem could be described as a bottomless well. No amount of security or assurance has made much of a difference and even though he's stepped further than he thought he could be, finally measuring up as Thor's equal —

It's enough. And it isn't. ]

And that is a good reason?

[ The response makes him falter, thinking about his own reasoning for it. He thinks back to his dad and the questions he asked those that joined their group. How many walkers have you killed? How many people have you killed? Why? Everyone has their reasons for what they've done, and Carl knows the questions were his dad's cautious way of feeling someone out. Not being so suspicious of everyone as he had been before. ]

Because I think you're a good guy. Bad guys don't want to change the way things are.

[ Loki barely controls the flinch. You could be more. Debatable. Sentiment. Maybe he has changed. Maybe he can't tell. ]

I was unaware you knew me in a personal capacity.

I don't have to know you to give you some sort of trust. Not everyone in the world is out to get you, you know? Everybody deserves a chance.

[ Especially since Loki hasn't smashed the heads of two of his friends into jelly with a baseball bat. Points there, already. Carl will continue to issue him trust until he's proven wrong. ]

[ Loki can't fathom that idea. To some degree, he can and a lot of the old paranoia has melted away in the face of Hela. His new status. The fact that he was never disowned, despite his father's words. ]

That is a simple way of looking at things.

I'm tired of being paranoid or looking over my shoulder, or wondering when someone's going to turn.

[ He crosses his arms, shifting. ]

I'm not about to do that here.

[ Loki gives him a long look. ]

So, are we good? [ He gestures to the knife in Loki's hand. ]

[ He turns to the knife, weighing his decision before pocketing it. ]

[ Carl offers him a smile. ]

Knives, mostly. I had a pair on me at all times but it was confiscated when I arrived.
