As far as we know, people go home. I know of a few people who have gone to different places like this instead of back home, but it's hard to tell what the outcome is.

Someone in my crew disappeared, but came back recently. So there's always a possibility that he'll return.

Speaking as someone who just recently returned from home, I can vouch that yes, people who disappear go home. Specifically, back to the time in which they appeared here, if that makes any sense...
