when you wish upon a star...
Suddenly, the SS Wonderduck and the SS Starstruck begin to move on their own... slowly, calmly, they drift to into the same direction, away from the other ships of the fleet. Slowly, they move until they're side by side.
Over the two ships' intercoms, an old song begins to play. And that is all the warning there is before the engines engage -- full speed ahead.
Like a pair of rockets, the ships torpedo forward. As they move, they start circling around each other, like a synchronized dance. They move with incredible grace and skill, far more masterfully than the average pilot augment. Except, each time that they pass each other, they clearly get closer to one another.
And closer...
And closer...
No matter what buttons the crews press, no matter how much they might panic, nothing is going to stop the inevitable. On the final pass, it becomes clear there's not enough room between them to avoid a collision. Any impact alarms on the bridge are blaring at full blast. Any other ships watching will not have time to attempt any sort of interception.

CRASH!!
As if to shield spectators' eyes from the horrors of ships colliding in space, there's a blinding light upon impact -- and once it gradually fades, the results can be clearly seen by all: There is no wreckage. Nothing is broken. But where there were once two ships... now there's only one: streamlined and shiny, but still somehow a little like the the former Wonderduck And Starstruck...
-----------
On the bridge, the crews of the SS Starstruck and the SS Wonderduck arrive, along with the usual pop! of Atroma confetti and ridiculous jingle music upon a successful shuffle. Sitting in the captain's chair is a round cake, just large enough for everyone to have one slice. There's a single candle, and the following message scribbled on top in yellow icing:
"Congratulations - SS Starduck!
Happy Fusion!"
... What, did you think you were going to die? Sorry about that.

And then it's all over, and they're all on the bridge, and there are new people and... confetti?? and cake???
Escha stands there, wide-eyed and in shock, for a very long moment. ... ... But after a while, she manages to point to the cake, and very quietly, tentatively ask: ]
So... we can all have a piece of that, right?
[ #priorities ]
voice
Escha, are you guys okay?!
voice
W-W-We're okay! H-Hahaha, ha... I-Is that something that happens around here?!

He realizes, dazedly, that he isn't dead. And that he's not alone on the bridge. Slowly, condescendingly, confetti drifts down onto his face.
The unfamiliar voice breaks the silence, and he turns his head in that direction, then silently toward the cake.]
. . . seems like it. [He pushes himself up to sitting, gathering his nearest crutch and twisting the cuff back into alignment with the grip.] Want me to start some coffee?
no subject
Oh! Coffee does sound really good right now! Would you like me to help?
no subject
[Eugene's usually a lot better at staying on his feet, and he levers himself back up easily once he has everything in order, straightening himself out and taking an inconspicuous deep breath. They're fine. Just . . . in a different ship, it seems like. For some reason. But they're fine. That's a good place to start from.
Balance steadier in more than one sense,he offers his hand.]
Sorry - Eugene Woods. Cook aboard the Starstruck.

Escha Malier! Lab support and captain on the Wonderduck. Nice to meet you!
[ ... Hold up. ]
Soooo... Starstruck and Wonderduck... [ She looks at the cake again. ] Starduck. ... Oh my gosh!
voice
Every once in a while. I've only seen it a couple times myself, but it's always really nerve-wracking. The ships really do look like they're gonna crash.
You sure you're okay?
no subject
[ Her poor brain is a lil fried right now ]
Yes. I promise I'm okay. Just a little freaked out. ... but there's cake here! And cake is a good thing, at least.
[ Optimism! ]

... ... ...
Oh!! Right! jfkdsl She fumbles for the controls, then replies with a slightly embarrassed laugh. ]
Aheh, uhm, y-yes! We're okay. I... I think. We're just... one ship now. That was really scary...

And I'll save you a piece of cake, of course!

[He makes it in eight! It helps that he was already in the Iskaulit, so he just had to grab the tea, inform Mikleo of his departure and then make tracks over to the new ship, the...Wonderstruck? How are they gonna fuse the name this time?]
[ Audio ]
[The time the Marsiva swallowed a ship was creepier but there weren't people in the ship back then. So this case wins when it comes to worry.]
I take it everything is working fine for the new ship too? Let us know if you need assistance. This is the SS Blameless.

[ Aaand when he arrives, Escha's waiting in the shuttle bay! She waves him over with a smile, ready to lead him to the new kitchen. It's kind of exciting!! Even though the actual crashing thing was super scary... ]
Welcome! To the, um, Starduck! ... That sounds so weird to say, I've been saying Wonderduck for so long...
[ Audio ]
But-- it seems like everything works all right. Though I haven't been back to my lab yet but I... think it's okay? All of the other parts of the ship are okay! Some of this stuff is even better than what the Wonderduck had, so... I guess that's a good thing.
Um, thank you for asking after us, Blameless! We appreciate it!
[ Audio ]
[Because honestly, these alarms are too multipurpose, if that can be a thing.]
Glad to hear something good came out of this. And you're welcome. I'm Shiro, by the way, captain and pilot. I don't think we spoke before.

Sorey reaches out to hand her a tin of the cookies Mikleo made a little while back, the tea service and tea in a basket under his arm.] Did any of the rooms change when the ships merged?
no subject
[He looks over her shoulder at the cake, re-reading the name cheerily frosted onto the cake.]
You have gotta be kidding me.
no subject
[ Looong pause. ]
Well! It's... it's kind of cute! In a way. Even if it doesn't make sense? It's like... a constellation! Stars in the shape of a duck! Maybe? ... Or an actual duck that swims in space?
[ She's trying to be kind about it? at least?? ]

[His delivery is so flat it's almost easy to miss the rueful curl at the corner of his mouth, the what the hell is even happening right now wryness when he snorts. At least the captain is trying to keep a sunny disposition about it.]
I mean. Not that it's that much weirder than anything else that happens around here.
no subject
Oh! Thank you! [ She takes the cookie tin, and starts down the hall! ] Some of the rooms did change a bit! It's like it all got upgraded when the merge happened! I was thinking that maybe the other ship had better stuff, and it just kind of carried over? My lab is still the same, though...
LMFAO i want you to know i cracked up
[ Is she part of Atroma? So many questions! ]
[ Audio ]
I don't think we have, no! I'm Escha Malier. Lab support, and captain of the-- well. I was captain of the Wonderduck... Let me see...
[ One mo, lookin' it up and double checkin'... ]
Aha! Yes! I'm now co-captain of the Starduck! Good to know!

[He blinks, momentarily thrown off-balance by the sheer unfamiliarity in her voice.]
Do you not have her where you come from? Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - that Cyndi Lauper?
no subject
Not that I know of. I'm from a pretty small town, though... Maybe she never came to Colseit... [ Smile! ] Girls do want to have fun, though! That's pretty true.
no subject
Probably why it's a classic. Did you want to get that coffee?
no subject
[ She follows him down the hallway, getting a good look around in the meanwhile. ]
Wow, it really is like our ships just turned into one... I recognize some of the Wonderduck's things, but it's all so much shinier now!

[ Audio ]
[Look he had a robot lion living in his mind, computer voices are nothing.]
It's nice to meet you, Escha. I'm guessing you share captaincy with the captain of the Starstruck now?
no subject
[ Nerd. Anyway, kitchen! It's pretty shiny and upgraded, which is nice. They've also already brought what's left of the congratulatory cake in here! She sets down the cookie tin next to the cake, and looks for some plates and forks so she can serve the sweets. ]
Oh, so, you said you saw this merging thing happen before? Were you on one?
no subject
[ Good point. Poor Shiro. ]
It's nice to meet you too, Shiro. And, yes! Both Eugene Woods and I are captains. I didn't know that was allowed, so that's interesting.

[He would guess but he's learned a long time ago that some people don't get anything near their professions. Why? Because Atroma.
There's a pause after that. The concept of co-captains brings back a strong memory. Thank goodness this is audio.]
It's definitely not common. I haven't seen Atroma assigned co-captains unless it was a fusion like yours, or people applied for it.
no subject
[ She thought she had a theory on augment assignments, buuut it doesn't really work all the time, so it probably really is just random. Because Atroma. But she's still curious! ]
