[Maggie is on the network, giving other crews a view of the boxes that can now be found in the cargo bay. The decorations are half out of the first box while she goes through them, but she's curious to know what else everyone has acquired.]

Anyone else want candy corn? The Goldstone has lots of it. It's kind of crazy to think the Atroma know about things like Halloween, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

['They're probably doing it to keep us busy' goes unsaid.]

I will totally take some of your candy corn. They actually taste really good with microwaved pepperoni. Not that we have pepperoni here... or traditional microwaves but it tastes really good.

[Maybe Freya eats weird things but she doesn't lie about how delicious they are.]

Candy corn and pepperoni. That's a combination I haven't tried before. I'd be happy to share some with you.

It's like a slap in the fact, giving out candy corn. All the stuff it puts us through and it gives us that candy. I'm from a place that grew corn, and even I hate it.

Well that'll be hard to do - dunno if most of these planets even know what pepperoni is. That and who knows how long we'll be drifting this time.

I don't really have anything against corn, personally, but candy corn just tastes like wax.

Corn's good for fuel, at least. You can convert it to ethanol.

Reality has a way of doing that. I don't think Candy Corn goes bad sine it's like 55% plastic, so it'll last for a bit.

True, though it's inefficient. We mostly use hydrogen and solar cells where I'm from - at least in the consumer stuff.

Actual corn that had been candied would be better than that garbage. Whomever dubbed that candy corn was a liar, a fraud, a cheat. A generally horrible person all around.

Sure. We could melt it down too, make hot cocoa or something. adding a little milk to it might help the bitter taste.

Ah. Yeah, that's true. Where i'm from those things are a bit harder in supply. Our options have been to just take gas from abandoned cars or find other fuel sources. Corn's in abundance if you're anywhere near a farm or can grow it, but it's not without its problems.

[Maggie laughs a bit at his distaste and holds up a piece between her thumb and forefinger.]

I think it's because it's supposed to be shaped like a kernel of corn? The color doesn't quite match though.

[She shrugs and just pops it into her mouth. It was better than nothing, she supposes.]

It's a type of candy and yes - it's because of the holiday, I guess. I mean - you can eat it year round if you want but eating that much candy all the time can rot your teeth.

[She shrugs, though of course he can't see it.]

Ugh. That's true. I tried a couple pieces here and there but I don't think I'd be able to eat it long term. That'd just mess up your stomach.

Pieces of chalk would have been a more appropriate name. It wouldn't surprise me if that had been a real ingredient at one point.

No. A lot of the events that this fleet tends to celebrate don't pertain to what we observe.

Well, it depends on the culture, I guess. Some celebrate their dead loved ones. Some just like scary things like horror stories and haunted houses and what not so they dress up. I don't really have a preference on either.

I think it's just saturated corn syrup and edible paste. And it's a tragedy that someone, somewhere, makes millions off them every year. Tragedy.
