[ strange is a small word for the situations she finds herself in. and as such, michael doesn't use it very often. strange implies a limited amount of imagination and that's never been a problem for her. despite her logical background, michael takes to new possibilities like a fish to water. she went through the old logs, the records. made notes of the data she's collected.

Hello. My name is Commander Michael Burnham of the USS Discovery. I'm currently assigned to the SS Bishop. I recognize that this is a difficult situation but I hope to have your continued cooperation as we find a way to escape these chains. I am a xenoanthropologist and I study cultures.

As such, would you be willing to share a piece of yours? I can tell you a little of mine. I was raised on a desert planet by a species known as Vulcans. They pride logic above all else and focus on the pursuit of knowledge and truth.

No, actually. The Discovery was tracking some unusual signals. Seven of them. Somehow I got transported here during that interim.

Now that sounds more familiar. When they grab us, they grab us. Doesn't matter what you were doing or where you were doing it.

Indeed. And while I'm no stranger, I wish it had allowed me to continue my work. It was rather pressing.

For what it's worth, they return us to the time and place they took us.

Has that been proven?

Proven might be a strong word, but there's a fair body of evidence suggesting we're not missed, and based on people who have left and come back...

[Shrugging, arms crossed.]

[ that's fair. michael purses her lips lightly. ]

Time is relative. Odd that remains true above all else.

There's a lot of theories why that might be. Most of them a little above my paygrade.

Your paygrade? What do you do?

I'm in intelligence.

[It's a fairly stock answer, one Natasha gives because it avoids sticky details or complicated answers. It's also true, technically. Which is useful when you're saying something that isn't true in spirit and hasn't been for some time.]

At least, back home.

[ intelligence. that's an interesting answer, especially since it comes with no rank or status. a spy then? ]

Do you miss it?

[Look. She could always be an analyst. No one ever assumes analyst.

There's probably a reason for that.]

Home, or the work?

Both. I imagine one isn't too far from the other.

Miss isn't the word I'd use.

[ deflection. michael doesn't blink. ]

What would you choose?

I have things waiting back home too.

But they are not missed?

We're not missed. That's not quite the same, is it?

[ michael pauses, trying to parse that. ]

That is a logical assumption.

There's plenty of time here to think about what you'd be doing back home, if you could.

I wish I could.

But I don't think the Red Angel has been here.

Doesn't ring any bells. What is it?

We don't know. We're assuming it is a being from the future. They set seven signals into the universe that we're currently tracking.

You think it's a trap? [Because it kind of sounds like a trap.]

That is one theory.

[ one ash believes and michael can't say he's at fault. ]

But all the locations have proven to be beneficial. Not just to us, but whoever has needed us.
