Hello. My name is Commander Michael Burnham of the USS Discovery. I'm currently assigned to the SS Bishop. I recognize that this is a difficult situation but I hope to have your continued cooperation as we find a way to escape these chains. I am a xenoanthropologist and I study cultures.

As such, would you be willing to share a piece of yours? I can tell you a little of mine. I was raised on a desert planet by a species known as Vulcans. They pride logic above all else and focus on the pursuit of knowledge and truth.

What would you choose?

I have things waiting back home too.

But they are not missed?

We're not missed. That's not quite the same, is it?

[ michael pauses, trying to parse that. ]

That is a logical assumption.

There's plenty of time here to think about what you'd be doing back home, if you could.

I wish I could.

But I don't think the Red Angel has been here.

Doesn't ring any bells. What is it?

We don't know. We're assuming it is a being from the future. They set seven signals into the universe that we're currently tracking.

You think it's a trap? [Because it kind of sounds like a trap.]

That is one theory.

[ one ash believes and michael can't say he's at fault. ]

But all the locations have proven to be beneficial. Not just to us, but whoever has needed us.

So there's a reason to pursue them despite the possibility it's a trap.

The possibility of traps will always exist. But we're seekers. We can't stop because of fear.

Seekers? That's an interesting way to describe yourself.

Is it?

[ it seems to line up with starfleet and discovery quite well. ]

I think that's what we all are. Seekers.

Any idea what it is we're all looking for?

I think that tends to be more personal, but I assume we're all looking for fulfillment. A way to mark our souls in the moment.

Now you're starting to sound philosophical.

I don't see why it should be divorced from logic and experience.

I think most people who are philosophical wouldn't.

I think we all have a little bit inside of us. Philosophy sounds like a big concept, but the truth is even our most realistic impulses come from some kind of meaning.
