Hello. My name is Commander Michael Burnham of the USS Discovery. I'm currently assigned to the SS Bishop. I recognize that this is a difficult situation but I hope to have your continued cooperation as we find a way to escape these chains. I am a xenoanthropologist and I study cultures.

As such, would you be willing to share a piece of yours? I can tell you a little of mine. I was raised on a desert planet by a species known as Vulcans. They pride logic above all else and focus on the pursuit of knowledge and truth.

We do have an Earth. But there are Earths in other universes. They are not the same.

You've got to guess that there are some similarities between the two. Born in Illinois, grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Traveled here and there for a long time.

Impressive. I never grew up on Earth. I've visited it a few times for work purposes, but it never left a lasting impression on me.

You're probably not missing much. What's your favorite place you've visited?

There is a world called Pahvo. Where everything sings. Every blade of grass, every rock, even the water. It was a beautiful planet.

[Connor makes a point of never calling it a welcome. It isn't one.]

I haven't heard of Vulcan before, but on my world space travel hasn't yet gone beyond the moon.

It's a pleasure to meet you, Connor.

[ polite and smooth. her expression is well-schooled but open. ]

In my timeline, Vulcan initiated first contact with Earth to help usher in the Space Age. If I may ask, what kind of technological advancements have your species made?

We've been to a few planets like that, though it was mostly the trees that sang. It was nice. Peaceful.

Pahvo was certainly that. It had a variety of crystal formations I have not seen elsewhere as well.

[Meaning both her reality, and the world itself. Though she's only heard about it second hand.]

Natasha Romanoff. Nice to meet you—nice as it can be under the circumstances.

According to the ship rosters, my brother is here.

[ which will be . . . fun. or something. michael hasn't quite dealt with that, though she is eager to see him again. ]

Circumstances are always changing. Nice will certainly do for now.

Yeah? What were they like?

[This is already proving to be an interesting conversation - she hasn't assumed he's human right from the start, as most around here do.]

In a sense, my species is the technological advancement. I'm an android. [He taps at his right temple, where the circular LED is flickering blue.] My version of Earth appears to be unique in how many androids are present and their advanced state. I'm from Detroit in the year 2038. It's my understanding that most other versions of Earth at a similar time period haven't created androids, or are still in very early stages of development.

[ oh, now that is interesting and it shows. ]

Fascinating. You are not wrong. While we have augmented human beings who require assistive technology, we haven't created anything as advanced as androids.

That's good to hear. It's easier to adjust when there's someone familiar to connect with.

[The fact she hasn't reached out yet might mean that it's not that simple. But it's usually not.]

Well, I hope he is. I've met other counterparts before and it never ceases to be jarring.

[ michael isn't in the habit of shrugging. not the vulcan way. instead she cocks her head. ]

Your network left a lot of information to peruse. I didn't see the need to rehash old questions. So I thought with community instead.

It has. And some of it's better than others. More importantly, not everything makes it on the network.

You mean other versions of the same people? Different timelines.

[ while that's true, the basics are clear-cut. ]

Yes. I ventured into another timeline briefly and met counterparts that looked similar to the people I knew, but behaved quite differently.

So long as they're less . . . morally askew, I can't complain.

Morally askew? [That is definitely not how Natasha would have described it.] They've been different, but I can't say morality has been the defining characteristic.
