I woke up this morning [from hanging upside down, as one does] and thought: what haven't I done since I got here?

[A pause for effect.]

Well, I'll tell you. I haven't gotten into any good fights. And I think that ought to change.

The cargo bay of the Caprine's open for sparring all day. Come on if you think you're hard enough.

What manner of fightin' are you lookin' for? I can't give you a man lookin' to prove anythin', as you seem to be doin' your very best to provocate, but I can give you sparrin'.

I knew it, you were itchin' for a fight. [He's grinning a little, despite the lingering irritation he feels when he looks at her. You were so smug, Mal.]

[ Carol doesn't bother calling ahead of time, just strolls into the Caprine's cargo bay, glancing around and taking in the differences compared to her ship. Not many, but good to know how the ships stack up against each other...

She smiles at Mal when she spots her. ] Hey. Still looking for a sparring partner?

[grabthecheese]

Are you making up for the fact I got in a fight before you?

[Was she supposed to announce that she was dropping by again? She's there often enough no one would be surprised, and this time Mal did invite the entire fleet. And she kind of wants to see that.]

Hard enough, huh? Ya' sure you're ready for a real brawl?

Nothing whatsoever, Seeker. Why, do you?

That'll do for now, I think, as I'm very bored.

[Really this is a good half of what she wants, but it's also fun to take down blowhards, so. Either or.]

Well, are you going to take me on, or are you going to keep complaining about me from far away?

[Mal glances up, takes Carol in with one glance. She looks strong, fit - a good potential match. Mal grins, quietly pleased.]

I'm not tired yet. What's one more fight?

[deshabille]

[Mal doesn't even acknowledge her captain's arrival by turning around fully; instead she glances over her shoulder and then goes back to setting up mats for the sparring. For everyone else's benefit, of course, not her own.]

Maybe. I'm a little ashamed of myself, truth be told. I almost got into a fight, but then I didn't, and you beat me. I'm letting the side down.

[The side being . . . just herself, probably.]

[He instantly, effortlessly reminds her of Jade, and so her smirk shifts quite quickly into some genuine beaming.]

I offered, didn't I? Are we talking or are we fighting?

[ That prompts a laugh from Carol. ] Good attitude to have. I'm Carol.

[ She rolls her shoulders and saunters closer, looking Mal up and down. She's small compared to Carol, but she lives and works with superheroes, so she already knows not to take size as any real indicator of strength or ability. Still... ]

Are you human or... something else? Because that's going to change how this goes, and apparently it's a valid question around here.

Mal.

[Cocking her head, Mal watches Carol watching her, standing very still and posing a little, the better to be looked at. The question makes her smirk.]

You're the first person to ask me that. It's a good first question.

Hardly. But I will spar with you if you're that desperate to lose.

I'm very desperate. Gagging for it.

[No, but seriously. Mal. You're disgusting. You're getting a disgusted noise before she cuts the connection. She'll turn up at some point to whoop your ass, but seriously what is wrong with you?]

[The important thing is that she's going to show up. And Mal has no doubt of this; she's made herself a very tempting target. She will be standing very conveniently with her back to the entrance to the cargo bay when Cassandra shows up. But her ears are pricked.]

[As tempting as it might be for Cassandra to simply rush right in (because Maker has he somehow not earned a fist to the face?), she's not stupid. She finds it very hard to believe that Mal is not aware she's there and there's absolutely no element of surprise in this situation.]

Don't patronize me. And don't you dare claim that you would never.

[Smarmy jackass that he is.]

[She turns at the sound of Cassandra's voice, a look of slight surprise on her face. Oh gosh, she totally wasn't using her supernatural hearing to listen out for you, girl!! It's fine.]

Of course I would. [It's kind of her schtick.] I can stop, though. [She really can't.]

[Cassandra scoffs.]

That would require you to stop talking for more than a few seconds at a time. [She steps further into the bay now that Mal is facing her.] Maker knows you might catch flame if you did that.

I think we talk about an equal amount. It's just that when you talk, it's self-righteous, and when I talk, it's patronizing.

[Ever so subtly, she shifts her weight so that her center of gravity is lower.]

[Cassandra doesn't respond with words so much as a swing aimed straight at Mal's jaw.]

[Quick as a flash, Mal's hands grab Cassandra's - and hold it there, a monstrous amount of strength behind a movement that seems lazy and smooth.]

That was just rude.

[openhands]

[Cassandra's not necessarily surprised that Mal stopped her punch necessarily. Anyone who is decent enough at reading body language could have perhaps seen it coming and reacted enough to avoid being hit. But it's the strength behind it once again.]

[For a moment, there is simply stillness exactly like this before Cassandra narrows her eyes and makes for a lower swing with her other hand.]
