When: Backdated to earlier this week ~~because I forgot to post this earlier like an idiot~~

[Riona's back on the network, though thankfully she's considerably less annoyed this time around.]

Some of you may recall that Beverly Crusher and I mentioning running a black box theater on the Iskaulit, where others could put on performances and whatnot? Well, someone made the mistake of letting her and I loose in a shop that sold play scripts and the like, and we found one we thought would be delightful to put on.

It's called Captain Bree and Her Lady Pirates and it seems to be a musical comedy about some, well, pirate shenanigans. It sounds a bit ridiculous and quite fun. It's not a big production and it doesn't seem to be intensive in terms of set building and the like. But we wanted to gauge interest before we move forward with it. We'll need actors, of course - preferably if you can sing well enough - along with costume makers and set builders. If anyone wants to see the script, I managed to get a copy on this device so I can send it to you.

[She's rather proud of herself for figuring that one out.]

If enough want to do it, we can look into auditions and the like. Any empty roles we may just fill with people on this asteroid belt who might be interested. Please let either myself or Beverly know as soon as possible if you'd be interested.

This should be immensely entertaining, if nothing else.

[Since arriving at the Fleet, Lumiére has tended towards just using the voice function to communicate with people outside of the Wonderduck. It makes his life considerably easier. He doesn't have to navigate the mine-field of questions that come with just looking at him. He can talk to people like a normal person, and it's great.

Today, though, he needs to actually address the problem of his general...him-ness, and as such, he'll switch the video on. He casts the screen a warm smile all the same, giving a little wave of a candle-hand.]

Bonjour, my fellow Fleet members. This is quite an interesting planet, no? I hear the concerts here are really something to experience. I might have to test out the waters myself. It has been a while since I got to enjoy one.

[It's not the kind of concert he's used to, but after a decade of no concerts at all, he'll sure as heck give this new kind a try.]

But! I had another reason for speaking to you today. I have heard there are several people in the Fleet who are experienced with magic. I was hoping I could speak to them, especially if they know anything about curses- because as you can see [he chuckles, gesturing to himself] I have something that might interest their magically inclined minds.

Summer has been a tourist long enough. Corbius offers everything that a ne'er-do-well could ever wish for. Safe ports to spend your money. Lawless skies to lie, cheat and steal. Shady ports willing to buy things with minimal questions asked. A pirate's paradise.

The problem is, she doesn't have a ship, or a crew.

But that's a quick fix, isn't it? There are three requirements to come along with Summer:

1) She's the captain. If she gives you an order, follow it or you're gone.
2) Be discreet. She doesn't want the whole fleet to know about this.
3) Be capable. If you can't carry you're weight, you're out.

[Where the heck is that music coming from?

Unaware that he's being filmed, Shinji wanders into the cargo bay of the Heron, following the muddled melody that's been plaguing him for a few minutes now. He stops dead in his tracks when he comes across--that. That rather large cardboard box with his name clearly plastered on the side. The music seems to be emanating from inside, on a loop.]

Well, that's not ominous at all, [he says dryly.

There's a large blue card attached to the top, which he steps up to and plucks off. As he reads from it, the messages inside flash across the video feed:]

- Shinji Ikari, you're not being true to yourself.
- There's something you've been hiding from everyone around you.
- But it's all right: we understand, and we want to help you.
- This should allow you get in touch with your inner desires.
- Your new life starts now! And don't forget to bring your friends!

[All of the sudden, the cardboard box falls to pieces, revealing a bunch of smaller boxes, each with preview pictures and labels stamped on the front. Kaworu: Arctic Fox Costume tumbles on top of Shinji: Azure Moth Costume, and both of those bounce around Asuka: Brown Cow Costume. There are additional costumes for members of the Heron crew, even.]

Oh, come on. I've been waiting more than a year for a sponsor, and this is what I get?

[Shinji sighs to himself, disappointed, and that's when he notices he's already broadcasting to the Fleet's network. God damn it.]

[The video flickers on, panning to one very, very annoyed queen. Behind her and off to the side is a large crate. It's been opened, and if one looks carefully, they might see what looks like arms and legs flopped over the side. Riona begins opening a letter, her movements jerky.]

Lucky me, it's been so long since I've gotten one of these. They appear to be plastic... dolls, I suppose. You're supposed to fill them with air and they take shape. I highly doubt they sent all of these for me, and thus this broadcast. What their purpose is, though, I do not know. They seem a little large to be for children. This note should be enlightening, I think.

[Riona holds it up and begins reading:]

"For Riona and the other sorrowfully separated or single persons in the fleet-" It's going to be one of those kinds of drops, I see. "We sympathize with your frustration and separation. Have some of our top quality models, free of charge, for those nights where the loneliness just gets to be too much. And for you, Riona - after we saw your awakening from your coma and learned of your heartbreaking situation, we were moved. We created a special model, just for you. We think you'll find the likeness striking. We already blew it up for you, and it's ready for immediate... use..."

You - Maker's breath, are these for what I think they're for? [Riona shakes her head in disbelief.] And what did they mean by-

[Frowning, Riona drops the note and walks over to the crate. Rifling through it for a moment, she eventually goes "Ah, found it, I think". She seems to wrestle with something for a moment until, after a hard pull, she wrenches it free. Out comes a fully blown up doll, well within view of the camera. Those from Thedas might recognize a certain Fereldan king that Riona just so happens to be married to.

Riona's shock quickly turns to red-faced anger as she slams the doll back down into the crate. Her jaw tightens as she turns and heads to the device.]

Whoever helps me push this blighted thing out the airlock gets a free drink on me. [As soon as she tosses out her offer, she shuts the feed off.]

[ The feed opens up with a view of the Heron's cargo bay, set upon a surface and focused on a very plain, yet sizable crate set in the center. Bucky comes into view, absolutely suspicious of the box addressed to him. He circles the crate a few times before kneeling and pulling out a knife so he can shimmy the lid off. It's removed very carefully and set to the side, much like he's diffusing a bomb. It may as well be, he knows what day it is, and this is obviously some weird thing from the Atroma.

He lifts a piece of paper from the top, skims through it quickly and crumples it and tosses the offending thing across the cargo bay. Bucky takes out a package that looks harmless enough- the crate is filled to the brim with very questionably made bottle rockets? Fiddling with it ends in a very harmless but extremely unnecessary explosion of glitter and confetti.

Boy, those sure aren't very nice words are they? Bucky seems to realize that the communicator is broadcasting this catastrophe, so a very glitter and confetti-covered captain stomps over to the device to shut it off. Not long after, a text comes through the network. ]

I don't care who takes the damn things, just get them off my ship. There are 99 more...

[Action;;]

[ Throughout the day, Bucky can probably be found sulking around the Heron, or sitting in the kitchen trying to clean glitter out from between the plates of his arm. His mood would be so much better if there were cake. ]

[After a month of waiting and glitches, the ships who turned on the bugging devices may have begun to feel it was a waste of time. But patience truly is a virtue, and a couple days before the fleet leaves the Rew system, a message from that unknown frequency is sent:]

This is the Interceptor Fleet, Drift Fleet 12. We’ve received your message.

Atroma’s surely trying to crack this encryption, so we’ll keep it short. We’re not your enemy. Our enemy is Atroma.

We’ll be in contact again, but it might be awhile. We’re still making repairs from that last fight. Sam can tell you how fast some of our crew work. So for now, keep those devices off. Only turn them on if you got a message to send. We don’t want to give Atroma time to hack into this feed and it should stop the glitches you’ve been getting.

Bloodsport, we got your attachment. We got a few ideas of what it could mean, but we’ll have to get back to you on that.

Paisley, thanks for the emoticons. Some crew were delighted and have been using them non-stop. Some of us, less so.

Visits - Starstruck & Heron

[Don't let it be said that Natasha Romanoff isn't good to her word. She's said she would pay visits to a couple of ships, and in early February, she proves good to her word.

First on the agenda, she stops in on the Heron. It gets priority because it's not just a social call. She said she'd help Barnes out with his hair—it's obviously been a while since anyone gave it a trim, and he's agreed to trust her enough to help him out. Hopefully Barnes is in. She didn't call ahead to check.

Later, she'll show up on the Starstruck. She's actually been here a couple of times recently, eating Wanda's cookies and stopping by to see Peggy, but she's trying to make more of a habit out of it. Steve clearly wanted her to. And she hasn't seen him on those visits, so here she is again.

Exploring - Siourew

[Natasha takes the opportunity to get down on the planet. Or around it, as the case proves to be. Either way, she's taking advantage of the opportunity to get outside, to see a real sky, breathe fresh air and stretch her legs.

If anyone wants to join her for a hike, she wouldn't turn down the company.]

Hallucinations - Vanquish, Islaulit & Siourew

[As the month wears on, the tone of things changes for the worse. Natasha hadn't assumed she'd escaped the glitches affecting various members of the fleet, but she had seemed no worse for them so far. That changes as the month wears on.

It starts with flashes out of the corner of her eye. Little girls who watch her with eyes too old for their faces. They stand in ones and twos, tucked around corners and in shadows, glimpsed in the reflection in a window, there for only an instant, then gone. It doesn't end there, though. After the flashes, aural hallucinations. Voices come straight from her memory, clear and distinct, speaking in any of half a dozen different languages. They bark orders. Praise her dedication. Quiz her on training. A few words, a phrase, and then they're gone.

Then the visions escalate. The girls stay are no longer just girls. They're ghosts, sporting evidence of the injuries that killed them—they're students she killed along the way, bruised or bearing bullet wounds. Sometimes they're missing eyes, missing mouths. They float in windows.

They don't speak, because the dead don't. They just follow her. Isn't that fitting?

Natasha tries to go about her days normally. She visits the shooting range, or bars. She makes her meals in Vanquishes kitchen and she stops into bars on Iskaulit. She even goes back planetside hoping getting away from the fleet will ease the glitch, but there's no such luck. By the end of the month, she might walk into a room and for five full seconds, it's as though she's stepped into the past, back in Russia, back in the Red Room, watching girls be winnowed away until only the weapons remain, or she might turn a corner and find herself standing face to face with the distorted face of one of her marks from her early days as an assassin. She tries to hide it, but as time goes on, even she can't entirely hide the signs of stress.]

But, ah... I suppose I'm confused on a few bitsy teeny points. For example... [He smacks his lips together and then presses them together in a thin line before shouting-] where the bloody hell am I?!

I was about to use me pistol on the big-baddy and I've been kidnapped by... someone. That's another good question: who kidnapped me? And while we're at it... let's see... when do we go home? Why are we here? What do they want with us? And... where do you keep your rum?

[He pauses.] In fact, why don't we move that last question up to the front of the line? And then let's squeak in a question about where my pistol is. I want my sword, too, aye, but the pistol... it's important. I'm savin' it for a rainy day, savvy?

That's... all. Be gone, magical mirror!

[He pulls the device back a little, and you can see his brows furrow as he tries to figure out how to turn it off. And then he's pressing everywhere on it until he finally, accidentally (but thankfully) turns it off.]

[Whether deliberately or by pure accident, the newest Communications Officer is abruptly dropped onto the bridge of her new ~~cell~~ posting, the Heron. Sure, she'd kept to herself aboard the Marsiva, mostly trying to figure out what was what by eavesdropping on everyone else, but she'd hit the breaking point and started pounding on locked doors near the end there. Which was why it was hard to say whether the timing of her sudden arrival was by accident or by design, as she'd shown up mid-tirade.]

-boot right up your sorry alien...!

[Aaaaand cue the confetti and tinny fanfare. That, and Livewire's immediate realization that she was no longer where she had been just a few moments ago. There's an obvious look of shock on her face at the sudden transition, but it's quickly replaced by one of seething fury. Which, admittedly, probably wasn't made any better by all the confetti falling deciding it'd be super neat if it reminded her that static cling still exists, and now she's a polka-dot confetti'd mess.

And it takes all of two seconds of gritted teeth and growling before she's a polka-dotted, smoking confetti'd mess as each piece starts to smolder, seeing as how she's currently jettisoning enough electricity to pass for an oddly human-looking Tesla coil. Hopefully those stray arcs of electric current that've started firing off around her don't hit anything expensive, but at least for the moment it's mostly the floor and bulkheads taking all the hits.]

Mom? Dad? Gene? Louise?! I'd even take Jimmy Jr. or Zeke or Mr. Fischoeder if you're around... but maybe not Jimmy Pesto... [It was a while before she calmed down, realizing that she was alone... for now. So she did the only other thing she could think of to do- went to the cafeteria to eat, try and decide her next move, and wait and see what sort of answers she'd be getting.]

Settling Dust And All...

Space Bar is back open for business. Brand new seedy-looking furniture and everything.

[Wryly. Well, you take what you can get in a rest stop like this, and it's not like their furnishings were classy to begin with. She might have had to empty out her double casino winnings for the most part, but what the hell. It's in the name of business and there will always be more casinos, right?

Anyway. She's making this announcement from the Space Bar, but she has a lot more to say.]

So...this is the third attack on the Fleet that people know of. Two by this mystery Fleet and one by a bunch of jackass raiders. It pretty well stands to reason that it's gonna happen again some time in the future-- hopefully a lot later rather than sooner, but. There were a lot of near misses.

[Aria still hasn't woken up. For one.]

So a couple things:

One, I'd really appreciate getting whatever information we can together about both groups, and I would assume I'm not the only one. People actually managed to speak to that first Fleet this time, didn't they? I know my Comms officer got through, at least. So what gives that they rescued us this time instead of screwing us over? We need to work out what the hell is going on there.

Two, the raiders were pretty cut and dried, and I don't think they had Atroma ties-- at least, their ships aren't compatible with our augments. I think they were exactly who they said they were. But even if they don't come back... we weren't prepared for an attack. And we should be, because I guess space piracy is totally a thing, and next time we might not have a handy bunch of ships lurking nearby to help us out. Our crews need to be well balanced so that no ship is left without crucial defences. We need to have some kind of contingency plan in effect fleetwide, even if it's only an outline. I don't have the experience for that kind of thing, but I know there's people among us who do.

So... if you've got any information, no matter how trivial you think it might be, could you share it? Experiences, weird stuff that happened, anything. And ideas for how to deal with this if it happens again would be great, too. I'm gonna be writing up a policy for my own ship. I'd love to hear what other captains did with theirs. And definitely, seriously, please give thought to moving to another ship that's lacking your augment if you're already a little redundant on your own.

[The First Battle]

[They come shooting out of the great dark. Guns blazing, no warning. The enemy ships are ragtag, mismatched, and cobbled together from spare parts. But that doesn’t make them weak. No-- years and years of scavenging have turned them into raiders, and they carry their scars with pride.

The battle is more aggressive than previous attacks against the Fleet. Nothing deters the raiders because they’re tough, and if they see a wounded ship floundering, they have no problems swooping in and boarding. Those crews will soon learn the meaning of teamwork if they want to bring the attackers down. They infiltrate the Iskaulit as well, just in case people try to hide there. At this point they are very, very used to tracking down women and children for their slave trade.

If asked why they’re doing this, the answer is simple.

Spare parts have to come from somewhere.

Don’t worry. Nothing on your ship, and no one, will go to waste.]

[A Few Hours Later]

[The raiders are too strong and the Fleet is failing. After what seems like an eternity of warfare, static comes in, broadcasted to the fleet at large. Something or someone is hailing them…

The signal is untraceable and the video is complete static, but they tell the Fleet they are here to help. Ships come swooping out of the black and they open fire on the raiders. They number a dozen, maybe more, and the ships look eerily similar to the ones currently used by the Fleet, if not a bit older and battle-hardened. Their shielding and weaponry is much, much better, however-- and most of them have custom paint or other touches on their hulls.

They’re not invincible, however. A few may end up between a rock and a hard place when the raiders surround them.

Some older residents may remember this particular group of ships. They’re obviously helping out now, but there’s nothing stopping Fleeters from firing on their would-be saviors save a complete lack of weaponry. You do have a Security officer on board, don’t you? They’ll defend themselves by seriously injuring your ship, but they won’t destroy it for some reason. Small mercies.

The raiders soon realize they’re outgunned and jump ship, taking their dead with them. The intercepting fleet pulls back, too, and both parties vanish back into the dark as silently and swiftly as they came. There’s a lot of cleanup to do whether your ship is disabled or you’re preparing to tow someone else.

Hopefully, the people who saved you don’t change their minds.]

I apologize if my absence was noticed by my crew or those I speak to in the Interfaith Center. It seems Atroma enjoys putting me to sleep for long periods of time - though the question is "How long?" I suppose. Should I expect any ill effects from repeated instances like these?

It seems time passed much more quickly while I was asleep. It felt as if I had returned home again and time had passed there as it normally does here. Two years passed there while it feels as if no time has passed here at all.
