[On Today's Episode of Drift Fleet:

The cargo are still full of crates of gumballs! The ships are well booked past capacity! There's a new empty vessel in the fleet- the SS Blameless! Official alerts have informed the passengers that they are signed to contracts that they've never agreed to! They are still docked at the dazzling FS Starlight, but are flat broke (or have they made it big?)

... I'm not sure, actually... Cove never said why, just that they couldn't. Or, not that I remember, anyway.

That's a shame. I wonder if they feel left out at all.

I'm pretty sure Cove could punch me through a wall without any effort, so... I mean, probably not. They have other things they do.

Hmm. [That's true. Humans had way of compensating for being unable to use seraphic artes, after all.] So, aside from merfolk, anybody can use mana. Is it the sort of thing you go to school for? You seem very familiar with all of it.

You can? I took it as an elective in junior high and high school, but I'd learned magic before that.

[what are those words] Can I ask where you learned magic, if you didn't learn it in a school?

[experiencepoints]

I, uh...

[She shifts her weight awkwardly.]

I sort of stole one of my mother's spellbooks?

Hah! Did you get in trouble?

[experiencepoints]

[She has to force her face to remain neutral, but it's clearly strained.]

No... Actually, she was... proud. I was like five years old at the time, at most, so...

[monolike]

[uh oh, better tread these waters carefully] Wow, that's adventurous for five. And you understood the material?

[experiencepoints]

Well... It was a spellbook. All I had to do was change my class, and then once I had the capacity for magic, it taught me automatically.

[monolike]

[what in the world are you saying] It...taught you automatically? I'm sorry, I mean...you mean it was like, spiritual? You just knew it instinctively?

[experiencepoints]

Yes? That's how spellbooks work. You read them and they automatically teach the spell.
