WHO Chris Halliwell
BROADCAST Accidental Fleet-wide video (thanks Atroma!!)
ACTION SS Huntress.
WHEN May 10th. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY.
WARNINGS don't play fetch with the soulball
[ The video is abrupt, the angle awkward. It cuts on to a comm laying on what appears to be a dining table in a fully upgraded kitchen. Chris is standing off-center, facing someone who is holding what appears to be a lightly-glowing orb in his hands.
This appears to be a very controversial thing, holding a glowy ball. ]
They gave you grandad?! It's a casino! Where the hell did they even get that?
Actually, where the hell do you even keep that now? Or... then. Back then? Whatever. How do you play slots to win your father's soul?

video;
He coughed, to get the sender's attention. ]
Sirs... you do realize your exchange is being broad cast publicly? Though my congratulations on the return of your grandfather.
video;
Shit. How long has this been on?
Re: video;
Long enough for me and anyone else listening to know that somehow or other your companion won your grandfather's soul out of the slot machines.
[ He gives him a sympathetic smile and raises his hand in greeting. ]
video;
[ There's only a moment of gaping before he pulls himself together. ]
This is, um... awkward. B-but, uh, I guess—has anyone else won something like this?
Re: video;
I cannot say for certain. I did win a small toy that looks extraordinarily like my Companion and feels like her.
[ Yes, the word Companion did have a capital "C" implied and used, Chris. ]
So odd items might not be unusual. Souls are another matter though...
video;
[ That sounds really inappropriate. Never mind that Chris knows exactly what it's like to know someone by how they feel magically. ]
Re: video;
Ah, that is to say... my Companion and I, we share a mental link. The doll feels like her, in that way.
[ A small stuff white horse that fit into the palm of his hand. Hardly alive, but hold it made him feel like Yfandes was closer to him. ]
video;
[ HRM. He'll buy it for now. ]
So this casino... is way more than it looks like. That, or we're getting rigged somehow.
Re: video;
Ah yes. It is the link all Heralds share with their Companions, the magical bond of the Chosen.
[ He doesn't really know how to explain it much better, even after three years doing so on and off. ]
This Atroma had the power to bring us here. Perhaps with the Fleet so close, it can influence the casino as well.
video;
[ Yes, okay, the link between two kinds of magical people thing he gets, but not the specifics. ]
Yeah, but that still leaves a lot to be explained. I don't like it.
Re: video;
Yes, it seems to be every time I explain it. It easiest if I say it is magic and leave it at that, I think.
Indeed, but I doubt answers will be forthcoming. Does your grandfather's soul at least appear in good condition?
[ How one might judge that he doesn't know, but it seemed important to ask. ]
video;
That's the weird part. It's perfectly fine. [ Even if the last time he saw it was over ten years ago. Chris isn't the type to forget family. ] Just... here, suddenly.
Re: video;
Do you come from a world of magic then? Most in the previous world I resided in were happy to say 'magic' and be done.
You do not think it is a falsehood, do you?
video;
I really hope not. That'd just be way too much.
[ His poor father if it is some kind of fake. Chris himself can't find any untruth about it, though. ]
Re: video;
In some ways, yes. The last place I was in had magic aplenty, though none I could tap into readily. No nodes.
[ And none of these ships either, which was a pity. Thankfully he did not need a node, it only made the greater magics easier. ]
Do you detect any malignant magics surrounding it?
video;
DID YOU SAY NERDS—] Don't use anything like that for my own magic. What kind of place were you in?[ He shakes his head. All he's getting from it is taste of sweet antiseptic on his tongue, which isn't exactly the best way to explain it, so he translates. ] No, it's just... soul presence. Pure and simple.
Re: video;
It was called Paradisa. The Castle was the main source of magic, providing for us, but there were no other sources I could detect. In my own world, magic runs in lines through the earth, gathering at points called nodes. I learned to draw from these nodes for magic in addition to my own.
[ Nerds indeed. ]
Then perhaps best to view it as a gift if it is not broken and there is no malignant aura to it.
video;
[ Piper is the other example. He doesn't know what to make of all that. ]
Well, it was a prize. Call me old-fashioned but it feels like there's got to be strings attached somewhere.
Re: video;
Yes, it is troublesome. Especially since I believed I was going home. But if it could take from all these other worlds, taking from the one I was in before is hardly out of the realm of possibility.
Possibly, though I have not been here long enough truly say what strings Atroma likes to wrap around its gifts.
video forever;
Right... We got some things from home before but that seemed kind of independent of Atroma. I think. Nothing's happened with those, either.
Re: video forever;
The Castle let us go. It opened the door ways home, and I had stepped through... and woke up here.
Perhaps the items are simply meant to induce new reactions for the entertainment of the audience.

Like props? That's... plausible, actually. [ And upsetting, but he won't say it. This whole thing is upsetting. ]

I wish I could tell you more, but that is all I know. Whatever magics the Castle had were beyond me.
I am sure some people enjoyed your reaction to seeing it.
[ His tone betrayed his irritation at that idea, finding it reprehensible at best. ]

Thus turning itself on.
[ U g h. ]

No, I would say not. I cannot feel any, except what magic I have and on those who possess it already themselves.
That would be my guess, yes.
