[The dreams are always the same. A great wind comes and cuts his skin; he is alone, and it hurts, but he doesn't cry out, his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth in the dry air. Blood bubbles out of his nose. He is very afraid.]

[He's pretty sure he doesn't make any noise during these dreams. No one's said anything, anyway. He could get away with keeping it to himself. But tonight something at the base of his skull urges him to tell secrets.]

[His voice, when it comes, is very quiet.]

I have questions about nightmares.

Do you have them? How often? What do you do to make them go away?

From time to time. I have ways to combat them, but it's never foolproof.

I don't know of many things that are foolproof.

True. There are few sure things in life.

I have a sort of meditation technique for myself, but I can apply that to other people in the form of a ward

Yes.

Does that bother you?

I don't know.

[Which is much more honest and much less tactful than he'd usually be.]

I'm not used to it.

[Honestly it doesn't really surprise him that that's the case. Few people understood magic, even those that used it, and it often led to fear. After so long out of his own world, this seems like a matter of course.]

Many people aren't. It's just another kind of power. Nothing to fear in it's own right.

True. Power's only dangerous when dangerous people wield it.

How does the ward work?

[lord_wizard]

It works on the premise that there are various modes of dreaming and closes the channel through which nightmares would come through, temporarily.

[mylegacy]

Like closing a sluice in an aqueduct. That's a very architectural way of looking at magic.
