[ The video flicks on to a spacious room, spans it from left to right, then top to bottom. There's a door off to the right side, and the camera follows it to the adjoining room, similarly large. Again, left to right, top to bottom. Both rooms are spic and span, empty, with wooden floors. And then it switches to audio. The voice is brusque, but amiable, with a moderate Brooklyn drawl. ]

Nice place for a gym. There could be a dojo next door, so it's all in one place. I've got a few sandbags to hang up, and some mats we could use. There's a notice outside for schedules — I know a lot of you folks have been offering training. The room's big enough, and there's plenty more like it on this ship.

Anybody else interested?

[ Anyone wandering the Iskaulit or looking for Bucky after the broadcast will find him humming as he puts up the sandbags. He's dressed very simply in the ship's jumpsuit, with no left sleeve. The left arm whirs in tune as he works. ]

That I'll be practicing? Three tiers of Fire spells. I'm keeping my other spells hidden until I can use them on the Atroma.

Hm, won't work so well on the wood. Tell you what, there's a few rooms next door, all empty. Maybe one of 'em has space and nothing that burns.

... You're forgetting that it's magic. Wood's probably fine.

[ Momentarily flustered. ]

All right then, you'll be fine. Do you want to come have a look at the room?

Yeah, sure. I'll be over there soon. Where on the Iskaulit are you?

[ He gives her the directions for the room, it's not too far into the ship. ]

[And sure enough, she's arriving fairly quickly, looking around with a worried expression...]

[ He waves her over, to the rightmost corner of the room, in front of the door connecting it to the next. ]

Hey, over here.

Oh, hey.

[she moves quickly to get over to him and out of any walkways]

Thanks. Still workin' on a lot of it.

[ He gestures her to the space. ]

Do you want to try out some moves? Should I leave?

You don't have to. I don't mind if you want to watch, but it's going to be a lot of the same spells repeated.

[ He's never seen magic, so this is new!! exciting!! and also something he's wary about. He perches on a chair, at a safe (he thinks) distance, and watches. ]

[she takes a deep breath, and then... doesn't move much, just watching the dummy. First, it's engulfed in a giant column of fire, then a smaller, quick burst of flames, then a mid-sized explosion. It's a massive display of pyrotechnics, but... Well, the dummy's taking a beating, but the rest of the room doesn't even appear to be heating up. Bucky could stick his hand in the fire and he wouldn't even be able to feel anything.]

[ There's no heat — he feels nothing even from over here, so after some time he does stick his hand in the fire, surprised that it comes away clean. He whistles. ]

That's pretty impressive. What does burn?

... The thing I target, of course.

[Her tone of voice implies that he just asked a very silly question.]

[ Right, right, that makes perfect sense once you think about it. But. Magic. ]

Sorry, I ain't never seen anything like it.

I keep hearing that, but honestly, this is pretty low-level stuff...

What d'you do at higher levels then? Summon fire beasts?

No, I'm a mage, not a summoner.

I mean, I still don't remember a lot, but I do remember seeing my mother fight once. She could cast spells that were like- a solar flare or a nova, or using heavenly light. Glaciers from absolute zero, or crushing something with gravity. Things like that.

[ there are types of magic??? help ]

S'pretty useful, all told. What did you do back home?

[There's a slight wince.]

[ A pause. ]

You study?

[ She can't truly mean nothing. ]

... I dropped out of college, and spent at least a few months freeloading off of my best friend.

As far as I know, I spent basically my entire life before that doing nothing but studying.

[ Something must've happened. His expression twists in sympathy. ]

What augment did they give you?

[Well, that's a non-sequitur, but she'll jump on the chance to talk about something else.]
