Or is it for his own? That hollowed-out man that Hydra took and twisted. How easy is it for Bucky to see that as a dark mirror?]
Why don't we ask him?
no subject
I will. I'll tell you soon s'I know.
no subject
If it's-- better. Easier. I don't mind where I am.

[ Stubborn to the last. It'll take time and he hates to ask Steve to be patient, but they've waited long enough, and Winter's already on his way to becoming... something. ]
no subject
He doesn't know me.
[It's said carefully. It's not his fault, and Steve would never blame him. It doesn't ache like it used to, this bone's been cracked, set straight. But it still has its cold fingers hooked in under his ribs.]

[ He saw it in the room. I knew him. The punishment that followed. There's a block; and Jim is good for breaking. ]
I saw it. I know it's there. Something has to give, then it'll surface.
no subject
It's okay. If he doesn't. It's-- all right. We can make new memories.
no subject
We'll see.
no subject
That's fair.

But that other voice was still someone he was uncertain about. Really, it was hard not to be. He was ready to walk away, and then he picked up on their conversation.
He doesn't know me. They were talking about him. Winter knows that it's not really his business what Jim is talking about with whom... but he's curious. He doesn't have the fortitude to be mad at Jim-- or Steve, if he really thought about it. It wasn't his fault, either.
It's okay. If he doesn't. It's-- all right. We can make new memories. He can't help it, he breaks protocol, standing in the doorway to the kitchen, eyes traveling between the two of them. ]
Do you mean it?
no subject
Hey pal. Mean what?
no subject
Carefully, he puts a hand at the crook of Jim's right elbow, squeezes just enough to imply he's all right, and then he hands over the towel. He looks at Bucky, the ghost of his old friend, and squares his shoulders.]
I do.
no subject
He didn't know what he was expecting in reply, but it isn't that. He's satisfied with the answer, but Steve is going to have to try a hell of a lot harder than that to really win his trust.
It's, at the very least, a decent foundation. ]
You intend on coming back.
no subject
As long as it's all right with you and your Captain, I'd like that.
no subject
[ He's quiet, withdrawing into his space so's not to intrude, but solid. ]
What about you, buddy?
no subject
It's fine.
no subject
I made meatloaf. Ma's recipe. You wanna have some with us? [ softer, ] Nobody expects you to talk. You can just sit and listen to us.
no subject
..Okay.
[ Jim took the time to cook, and it's something that has completely disappeared in his own memory bank. It isn't lost on Winter how valuable the gesture is. ]
no subject
So. I was just tellin' Steve here about smartphones. They're like teleprinters, telephones, cameras, and record players all in one. Sure don't make touchscreens for folks with a metal limb, but don't worry about that.
[ And so, he keeps talking, gesturing, filling up the kitchen with his voice. How one house would have one telephone that everybody shared. Just going out to see someone instead of calling or texting. ]
You know it took me forever to get used to those — [ he snaps his fingers, ] emoticons? I used the default ones, I don't type 'em out.
no subject
Every unit needs a good sniper. They had the best.
Steve sits away from the Soldier, giving him space and room, and though he'll occasionally offer a slight encouraging upwards tick of one corner of his mouth whenever their gazes happen to intersect, he's content not to push. He keeps his hands visible, his posture nonthreatening. He's not going to treat any version of Bucky Barnes like glass, but he can at least mitigate the threat response.]
I'm not a big emoticon guy. Don't mind texting, though.
[Because it's impersonal. In the brave new world, impersonal is how he gets by.]
no subject
Things obviously turn out just fine since he's sitting right there. For now, Winter isn't overly-concerned about it.
For now, he'll just let them have their conversation and bide his time. He's no stranger to waiting until the most opportune moment. It's what he's built for. Jim did say he didn't have to talk, so unless it's called for, he won't. ]
no subject
[ He smiles fondly at the Soldier. There's something too subdued about Steve that doesn't sit right with him, but Jim can pick it apart later. ]
The pair of ya. I hate trying to press those damn keys. It's too slow.
