[Now that we've all had time to settle back into our ships, let's see what's going on over on the Iskaulit! For the new folks, there are already a few establishments and projects going on, but there's plenty of room for everyone, either to join in or to build their own thing. So mingle away!]

[ A lot of that only barely doesn't go over her head thanks to the augment. Science isn't exactly at its pinnacle in 1938 in a world where super vampires can just step out of a wall and she can channel the sun through her scarf to kick their asses.

But that last line catches her attention. ]

[ Is she implying this place was created specifically for them ... ? ]

Mmm... In my universe there was a species millions of years ago who were, at that point, the only sapient species in the galaxy, so when they realized they were going to eventually die out, they spread their DNA on thousands of planets. They knew they would never live to see the fruits of their efforts, since it would take millions of years for the microbes they planted to evolve, but their efforts were more successful than they could have ever imagined.

[So not exactly what you were thinking. She shrugs.]

Maybe that isn't what happened here, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

... I see.

[ That sounds like something a Very Bad Dude from home might try to do, if she's understanding it right. ]

You'll have to forgive me; science is not so ... [ She pauses, trying to think of a word ] None of these things would be possible, where I am from.

[Six months ago, Beverly might have argued with this, but she can accept such a statement with equinamity now.]

Oh no, no! I'm sorry I shouldn't have... See I was one of the ones who made that discovery, so I tend to get a little enthusiastic about it.

[ She looks a little surprised. ]

Are you a scientist?

Physician, but I've done quite a bit of research in botany and robotics, as well as medicine.

That's ... quite the resume.

[ She's impressed! Good going, Beverly. ]

Are you a physician aboard your ship as well, then? I've been led to believe that some people were assigned jobs they had never done before, instead.

I am, though you're right: not everyone's skills necessarily align with the augment they were given. In fact, it seems that some people are given the exact opposite of what they are good at.

[Like nearly every counselor here, it seems...]

That seems rather counterproductive.

[ She pauses ]

Then again, I suppose most everything about this situation does.

I don't think they're really into what's productive, only what's entertaining.

I'm beginning to see that.

[ She looks back to the cactus, arms folded across her chest. Entertainment sure is a hell of a reason to bring the dead back to life, isn't it ... ]

When did you arrive?

[ She pauses to think about it. ]

About a week ago, now.

[Beverly gives her a sympathetic look. Those first couple of weeks are so disorienting, even when you are already used to living on a starship.]

I've been here almost nine months.

[There is a pause, as she thinks about that. Too long, and yet there are people who have been dealing with something like this for years.]

I'm happy to try to fill you in on anything, if you still have questions.

[ Nine months ... that's a long time. But it actually doesn't worry her -- in fact, she's kind of glad. Maybe that means that Joseph and Caesar can continue living here, if nowhere else.

She's quiet for a moment, but she does have a question. Most things she's able to pick up on from what she can read in the communicator, but it's likely people tended to be more secretive about what she's wondering about. So: ]

Is it common for those who've passed away to appear here?

[Beverly blanches a bit at that question, the image of Finrod getting ripped apart by that wolf standing out vividly in her mind. It takes her a moment to answer.]

I wouldn't say it's common no, but it's been known to happen.

[ She sees the reaction to the question, watching Beverly patiently. ]

I apologize, I hadn't intended to touch on a sore spot.

It's alright, better me than - the person I'm thinking of. Besides, I presume you have a very good reason for asking that. It's not a question I've gotten often.

Yes, I suppose I am asking from personal experience.

[ At least she's got an easier question next? ]

What is the longest you've heard of anyone staying here?

There are people who have been here since this cycle started, a little over a year ago.

Hmm.

[ Since the "cycle" started, huh ... ]

And I suppose there's no telling when that will end.
