[Oh. Well, this is new.

The bunks are comfy enough, and it's not exactly the first time Katie has found herself in an unfamiliar place. (Is it Thursday?) But it is the first time she's woken up in one for a long time, and so she squints at the door for a long moment trying to remember what she was last doing.

Then she peels off the bunk, blanket and all, and shuffles her way out to explore. She's not particularly worried, and most confusion goes right out the window when she see the giant windows that let her see out into space because seriously. She rockets over, face smooshed against the glass. That's probably where anyone on the Marsiva can find her for a long time, because space. Spaaace. This is the best accidental visit ever.

Much later, she'll actually think to check the comms, and only when she goes looking for the one she's meant to have. She turns up on the feed still with the sheet half draped over her curls and her nose still a little red from her mushed space-watching, and addresses the network cheerfully in a British accent.]

I think I took a left turn. Are we really in space? That's not just a clever painting or something, is it? Does that mean there are spacesuits? Can I go out in it? Is anyone here that I know? And what buttons do I push to leave again? Not that I didn't turn up here on purpose, because I've always wanted to see space and I really can't jump that far. Oh, but I should probably make sure, so if you could help I'd be much obliged.

...oh, I need a sword, too. Mine ran away.

You'd be surprised what people can do when they put their minds to it.

[...okay no, she can't jump very far. But she frowns.] Why can't I leave? I can go wherever I want, can't I?

There really isn't any place to go. The Atroma are the ones who control the course. They don't show up very often.

[She's quiet for a moment, nose wrinkling up as she thinks about that. Tihs shouldn't be right. She was meant to be able to travel wherever she wanted, not get stuck somewhere else.]

Are the Atroma aliens, then?

I don't know what they are. No one ever sees them except the video feed.

[ So they very well could be aliens. ]

[Oh, it's like the Animus all over again.]

Are any of them fish? [This is actually a valid question in context.] I suppose I could just pretend they're aliens even if they aren't. They're much more scary that way.

..I don't think any of them are fish.

[ A pause. ]

The Atroma aren't scary.

If you don't know what they are, how would you know if they're scary or not? They could turn into giant soul-eating monsters when you're not looking.

[She doesn't seem frightened in the slightest. She's just being a brat.]

I guess they could, but there are scarier things than them around.

[ Then again, cross-dimensional kidnap is a pretty intimidating feature. ]

[Oh, that's a good point.]

What sort of scary things?

That depends upon what you think is scary.

Bears. Giants. [She considers.] Accountants. Clouds. I don't much like counsellors, either.

We have the last one, but none of the others.

[ Accountants??? What kind of world does this kid live in? ]

[One where she's not allowed to tell the truth. But she gets as close as she can. Most of the time.

She makes a face.] Do they sit you in chairs and try to tell you all the things you're doing wrong?

Not that I've come across. I doubt anyone would like that.

It's strange how people pay them for doing unlikable things, then.

[Shifting tacks-- nothing scary here, really, except space and maybe getting lost in it. She's almost disappointed.] Is there any way home at all? I'm not in any hurry, but I might get into trouble if I'm late for dinner.

There isn't so far as anyone can tell.

[ A beat. ]

From what I understand, everything stops where you're from. You get put back the same moment you were taken. I don't know how reliable that is.

Oh. [That's... uh. Familiar. But she brightens, anyway. It means she still won't be missed.]

That's very strange. Is this place still part of Adstrinnnng-something? [It's a long and stupid name, okay.]

I couldn't tell you. This is the first time I've been to one of these places.

I've been to lots by now. I never seem to stay in one for very long. Have you been here long? What's your name?

I think it's been four months? You can call me Winter.

[...that's an unfortunate name.]

Is that a last name or is it meant to mean something?

It's a nickname. [ A nickname of a code name, but details.. ]

I don't think my name fits me, anymore.

[Oh good. She smiles at him.]

Winter shouldn't fit anyone. You could always change it! That's what nicknames are for.

I could change it.

[ He's not really at the point of wanting to just yet, but maybe soon. ]

What would you change it to? Summer is a better season. Or Spring!
