[So she hasn't actually used these to make an announcement of her own since she first got here. She doesn't think Luffy even knew many people, he wasn't here long enough, but. You know. Just in case.

Besides she has another question which she's just gonna focus on.]

If anyone met Luffy, I'm pretty sure he's gone home, or... wherever people go when they vanish. I guess he didn't meet with approval or something. [So flat. To be honest, if she was sure he was going home instead of back to wherever he'd been stuck, she'd just be relieved. But there's nothing she can do about it either way.]

He left me a gift, though. Ah. [She holds up her palm and opens it to show a small scattering of seeds.] I grew up on an orchard back home, and these are... well. They're from my favourite fruit. So I'd like to grow it, but that's really kind of difficult in space. You need a lot of soil for a mikan tree to grow in, y'know? So if anyone has any advice or shortcuts or magical interventions, let me know. I can try a few different ways. Asteffiel, I don't... can you work from seeds? So that's one option.

I don't even know if I'll be here long enough to watch them grow, but it'll give me something to do.

Then she'll just say hell with it and go shopping - she takes the distraction option and hit up the nearby waystation. She hasn't had a chance to shop yet, and it's great therapy. Besides, she can think of at least one idiot who could use some new clothes.]

We could try to set something up in the garden on the Iskaulit. We've already replanted some cactuses and stuff in there, and it'd be good to get something more edible going.

[If anyone could do it, it'd be Luffy. Probably by accident.

She smiles faintly.] I didn't realise there was a garden. But yeah, in that case, that sounds ideal.

[It's hard for people, when they lose a friend. Allen's seen it far too many times...]

Like Ino said, her and Beverly are making a garden on the Iskaulit. If any ship had room to grow a tree, it'd be that one.

What's a mikan tree like?

That's good to know. I guess I'll be visiting the Iskaulit a lot from now on.

It's a pretty small tree. They usually only grow up to six, maybe seven feet. The fruit's delicious. Ever tried it?

Yeah. I'm sure they'd be happy to help grow it.

And hmmm, no. I can't recall anything like that.

It's pretty recent. We've mostly been working on getting everything set up so the water flows correctly and all that.

We might need to wait until a stop where we can get a little more dirt, though, depending on how much soil you need.

What does the fruit taste like?

They're citrus fruit, and sweet. Do you have oranges where you come from? A little like those.

Do they need a lot of heat? Or sun?

Sun, definitely. They don't need a lot of heat, because they're pretty sturdy, but given how cold space is it's definitely useful to have a source.

{She gives a soft laugh.]

Sadly it'll be at least a year before it might even start to bear fruit, normally. I'd kind of hope you wouldn't still be here by then.

[HE SHRUGS]

That's fine. The last place I got stuck I was there for seven years, so I'm kind of used to being in places awhile!

I am sorry to hear that Luffy left... I would have liked to get to know him better.

Well, my sister can be like that sometimes, so it wouldn't be too much of a problem.

Mm. [That's right. He lost someone too, before she even got here.]

What was she like? Your sister.

River... [There's some sadness in his voice, but a lot of fondness the more he speaks.] She is 10 years younger than me and is incredibly, incredibly smart- even moreso than I am- but she has always looked up to me, too. She could be a brat sometimes, but we have always been close. I love her more than anything.

I can understand why. Family is important, isn't it?

I have a sister, though she's older than me by two years. She runs the orchard back home.

That's fine. In seed form, they can keep. You've also got to find the right kind of soil, I'd guess-- I can't see that every planet we find would have the right kind of nutrient makeup.

They need about three feet depth in soil to grow. Is that... still doable?

Anything's doable. Just not right away. I'll see if I can get the boys to draw up a plan for something that can accommodate it, though.

Yeah, sure! I'm sure you'd know best exactly what type of care and soil it needs, so I'll definitely check back in to make sure we've got the right stuff.

I know plenty! About citrus trees, anyway.

What other things do you grow down there? Just cactus?

Right now we have a pretty weird assortment. There's some cactus, a few more tropical things from that island planet, and then a couple of your more standard flowers -- like daffodils, roses, so on and so forth.
