[It's a honed edge of bitterness, and Steve sets his jaw against it. Because it's true, isn't it? They've been taken from their homes, implanted with-- something against their will. Choice is moot. He's been ignoring that, at least as far as conversations with others go. It's never very far from his mind.]

A year? How'd that happen?

The last place I got stuck in wasn't so hospitable. Shortages on food and water, never mind anything approaching a change of clothes. I traded for animal fur to keep warm, and someone gave me the shirt. [An over-large men's shirt at that, but when you turn up into winter wearing a tanktop and shorts you take what you can get. She'd been wearing it on board the ship until the day he brought her pie.]

It practically got torn down to pieces in my stay there. Makeshift bandages and things like that. [Which isn't the greatest memory, but she only smiles a little wryly.] I was kind of amused when I turned up here and it was back in pristine condition.

[The picture she paints is one he knows all too well. Short on supplies, inadequate winter gear, inhospitable conditions. The sympathy that flickers across his expression isn't feigned, but it's brief. He's not one for pity.

It does cast her in a new light. Not that he'd had any cause to doubt her skills or experience before, but-- well. Shared life experience.]

This place just loves its irony.

[His tone is equally replete with it. He even rolls his eyes (however faintly).]

Doesn't it? [She glances at him side on, a more friendly grin now.] I'll be sure to keep that in mind.

What about you? Is this the first time you've turned up in a place like this?

[He snorts.]

Somewhere completely unfamiliar, where it seems the whole world's gone crazy around me? No. Not the first time.

[The way he phrases it makes her think it's not got much to do with places like the Fleet. She pauses for a moment, wondering if she should ask. Decides it's none of her business.]

Gets old after a while, doesn't it?

Sure ain't my favourite thing.

[He presses out the last of the biscuits, rolls the remaining dough back into a ball so he can flatten it out and repeat the process with what little is left.]

You think Atroma's going to send everybody home once they've had their fun?

[mikangirl]

I'm sure of it, actually. [Her lips curve up as she works.] I've got a friend who went home with me after Adstring-- the last place. I never made it back because I ended up here instead. But he did. He was there sailing with my crew before he also turned up on the Fleet, and I was home doing my job like I was meant to be.

So either we all go back, or I'm the one that wins the popularity contest. And I doubt that part. [She's not even trying.]

[enshields]

[A bit of a snort. Popularity contests. Bond sales take a ten percent bump in every state I visit. He's bought that T-shirt once before, and never again.]

Oh, I don't know. I think you've got a shot.

Probably. [Shamelessly. Without missing a beat.] If I tried. Which I'm not. I don't like dancing for other people's entertainment unless it's by choice.
