2nd Shuffle

Who: Remy LeBeau ‘nd ya
Broadcast: Fleetwide video
Action: Arslae
When: 20th December

Greetin’s all.

It’s ‘round this time a year… or an Earth year, ‘ssumin’ all Earth years be the same with the different worlds. [Remy gave a shake of his head to get himself back on track.] It be comin’ up to a time of celebration for a percentage of the planet. Christmas, Hanukkah, though think that might be passed… Kwanzaa, or just general celebration for those non-religious types as well as an ‘xcuse to eat, drink, ‘nd put up with family ya normally don’t see the rest of the year.

‘nd bein’ ‘way from home for a few years now, well, makes a boy wanna try ‘nd bring a piece of home here. So, been tryin’ to do my part ‘nd figure out some recipes that might almost feel traditional if ya shut ya eyes ‘nd hold ya nose, considerin’ what we got to work with on the ships. But was thinkin’ to share with ya’ll so ya might try ‘nd ‘njoy them also. Though, know a number of us be down on the planet, ‘nd maybe some of these things will still work, provided ya don’t mind ya blood pressure goin’ through the roof with everything bein’ mixed with salt here.

Now I know all the ships don’t got the same layout ‘nd some don’t have the same kitchen upgrades that we so luckily got on the Wonderduck, but I tried to keep that in mind with at least some of these recipes. But ideally, better to have a rank two to do most of these, ‘cause it gives ya access to the stove top ‘nd at least the toaster oven. Some might be doable in the microwave, but not sure how well these will work. Or ya could try just lightin’ a fire, but pretty sure that won’t work well in such a small space, hein?

[Remy offered a smirk to that bad joke before he glanced down, seeming to read off something that he held in his hand, no doubt notes he had taken down as he thought of these options.] Food wise, can give a go usin’ the orange drink as glaze or marinade with chicken, maybe reduce it a lil’ with some lemon, again, if ya got it, to take away some of the sweetness. Get a bastardization of chicken l'orange, throw in some salt, pepper, bit of the garlic powder, ‘nd see how it goes. Or make a paste of curry, garlic, ‘nd bit of the chili, not too traditional but might work. Same with goin’ the Asian route again with peanut butter, chili, a bit of teriyaki, don’t have skewers to stick them on but can put it over rice if ya got it. Last two would work with beef as well, oh! ‘nd mix of garlic and BBQ for beef would work for the chicken also.

Sides be a bit harder, since we missin’ a lot of vegetable ‘nd carb options. Cut up the mixed veggies, garlic, butter, bacon. Would say stuffin’, but not sure how well the wheat will work since it can’t really absorb flavours.

‘nd most ‘mportantly, drinks. Now, might be holdin’ my breath that those who claimed to be makin’ up bars ‘nd bringin’ in alcohol, so sadly goin’ to have to make these all virgin ‘less we get a sudden shipment of something decent to mix in to them. Orange, lemon, cherry, the gelatine work in this, [Remy was listing these off on his fingers as he spoke.] Soda water, got yaself a punch. Donno if can make a mixed up mulled wine if ya heat it, not sure that will work well. Or try ‘nd freeze it ‘nd make it a slushy. ‘course the chocolate flavourin’ ‘nd milk powered, bit of cinnamon for hot chocolate. ‘nd for those with pumpkin spice, throw in some of the milk, bit of vanilla, cinnamon again, heat ‘nd repeat.

Good luck, hope some of these be at least semi appetisin’ for ya’ll. I don’t promise success on all of them, more just comin’ up with ideas than havin’ a chance to test them all out just yet. Maybe once we head back off ‘nto where no man gone before ‘nd all stuck on our ships again, may have a go tryin’ these all out for m’self ‘nd thinkin’ up some other ideas.

I’d be ‘nterested to hear others take on this all too, ya traditions ‘nd festive eats, or for those who don’t have the whole Christmas holidays from ya worlds, what be ya biggest celebrations ‘nd what goes on durin’ them?

Oh, woe to the poor sod who thinks he can get pass off a bloody hand-me-down scrap of cotton and call it Christmas.

[ she's teasing, of course. any scrap of cotton can be useful in its own way. ]
mucked: (☂ it's only natural dear)

[ she laughs. ]

It all sounds a bit gaudy. But that's Christmas for you, I suppose.

Which leads me to ask, of course, why a Frenchman finds himself in southern America?

[ because she assumes he speaks of america. and peggy knows nothing of the acadian expulsion, and eventual settlement of the people who would become cajuns. her history lessons remain a lot more european. ]

Un mélange, as they say. Well -- you're something of an oddity to me. I've spent far more time in France than I have in New Orleans. That's certain.

Work. [ ... ] Although I've always wanted to return for pleasure. Somehow, I know the country will glitter all the finer when out from underneath Hitler's boot.

[ she exhales. ] You see, I was last in France during wartime.

We ended the war with a terrible contradiction in our hearts -- or, at least, I did. Bright-eyed for the end of the fight, but also so terribly hollowed out by what had come before. It's not so easy to put one's faith back in mankind and in peace after you've seen the first at its worst and the second dashed upon the ground of a snowy French forest.

[ she exhales. ] I've had the chance to read a few things back on the Marsiva -- history books, or I've talked with others. It's hard not to question the intentions of 1946 when looking forward at the results of 2012, or 13, or 14.

[ many she's met are from that range. ]
