Anyone fancy a flutter? [ a brief, honeyed smile. ] We haven't got horses to bet upon, so I suppose dice and cards shall have to do. And if we can see fit to justify a Christmas Day, I imagine we can also decide upon a New Year's Eve.

[ she looks squarely into the network's broadcast. firm, electronic eye contact with any and all watching. ]

Four days from now on the Iskaulit. Come with credits -- or whatever else you deem valuable enough to wager -- and help us fleece poor Jim Barnes of his hard-earned wages.

[ afterwards, she can be found fiddling with the comms panels on the starstruck. she isn't particularly certain of what she's doing, but it's better than being idle. and she might as well try and put her bloody awful augment to work. over the next two hours, some ships may experience odd and incomplete burst messages as she tests frequencies, filters, and broadcast capabilities. ]

Please do. [ ... ] Cards we've no doubt got -- [ she assumes jim has some secreted away somewhere. ] But I was beginning to wonder if I'd committed myself to using washers as chips.

Fortunately there was a casino stop months ago, so I'm sure there are several of us with chips and other equipment, if you ask around.

It seems I came in at the wrong bloody stop.

It was a pretty fun stop, I'll admit. Who knows, maybe we'll run across another station like it. Can't be the only casino in the galaxy.

It does beg the question of how the Atroma choose our stops. If it's even them doing the choosing.

[That gives Beverly pause.]

What do you mean? You think there's someone else besides Atroma behind all of this?

Oh, I have little doubt they're behind it. I do take up issue with all these claims of fanatics and entertainment shows. It's all so gaudy -- like a distraction. [ ... ] But I also think they don't necessarily choose our stops freely. All methods of transportation have limitations -- perhaps we stop where we stop because we must stop.

Perhaps. I have no doubt, at least, that Atroma did not anticipate the attacks that drove us into the nebula or the so-called "calibrations" they preformed afterwards. But as for the rest... it really depends on their power source and we have no clues as to what that might be. The Enterprise would have almost no problems making the journey Atroma has taken us on while I've been here, as far as needing to refuel goes. That's not to say there aren't other needs that perhaps we cannot anticipate - what is, for example, the physiological make-up of our captors?

[A beat.]

If they are even corporeal at all, that is.

They've spoken with members of the fleet, haven't they? Has it ever been in person?

[ oh, she doubts it. ]

Not since I've been here, no. And I don't know that Diamond and Beau are actually of Atroma's species... I think they're more like liaisons of a sort.

[A beat.]

Of a very irritating sort.

Well. [ she nearly smiles. ] Liaisons have their own jobs to fulfill, I imagine.

[ having been one, she's all too familiar with those strains. ]

Perhaps... but I'm hard pressed to feel much sympathy towards them.

No, but it remains a useful thing to try and understand them.

I probably didn't do much to help on that front when I spoke to them. Can't say I really regret it though.
