[ by all accounts, sansa stark has survived. she now lives on an armoured ship. her brothers are nearby -- alongside one brother's devoted friends, who have all been more kind to her kin than she can put to words. although nothing so much as approaches normal, she's beginning to feel settled. stability creeps in from the corners.

and this allows her to ask a question of her fleetmates: ] Is there any means by which I might find spare cloth and thread? And needles, too, of course. The ships give us so much, but I'm not certain -- [ not certain they can give me these. she does not understand their magic, nor the purchasing power of her device. ]

I like to embroider. I should like to do it again, if I could. [ but without a handmaiden to bid fetch these things, she doesn't know how to begin. perhaps it's as simple as looking in the correct spot -- but she was never raised to procure or purchase anything in her life. ]

Well. [ she gathers her care and caution for a moment. ] Upon which ship does he sail?

[ she has no intention of following greed's advice, but she'll pretend as much. ]

Way ahead of you, toots. I'll just send him your way, seeing as you're not so good at the doing of things.

[It's from the kindness of his own heart. Really.]

[ -- ugh, there is a particular frustration in knowing someone who is both productive and annoying. ]

In that case, he ought to contact me before he -- before he is sent my way.

[ she will not stomach some stranger arriving upon their proverbial doorstep. ]

What's wrong? You don't like deliveries?

[He tsks at her.]

I don't care much for surprises, Captain.

Surprises are the best part of life. You gotta learn to roll with the punches if you ever want anything out of this screwed up existence.

That will never be my way. [ almost gentle. mayhaps she wants him to believe the worst of her -- she'd rather stop being half-way noticeable to him. ]

Never, huh? Is that what you'd have said if someone asked if you'd be cruising through space on a bunch of rustbuckets?

[ quietly: ] Of course. Even now, it isn't my way. I did not choose to be here.

[ but privately, she believes she would choose to stay. ]

And yet here you are, still alive and ticking. Funny world, ain't it?

Not really, no.

[ she isn't laughing. ]

[He has a chuckle for her.]

Then maybe you need to start finding some reasons to laugh.

I've got plenty. Thank you.

[ you're just none of them. ]

Eventually, I might even believe that.

[ a spark heats her voice. there's a core to her composure that grows red hot: ] What difference should that ever make to you?

[ she isn't his anything -- not kin, not crew, not anything! ]

[Well... it doesn't.]

What - can't a guy enjoy seeing a pretty girl smile?

[ oh, she's tempted.

tempted to draw out her best courtly smile -- worn in moments when she felt most fragile, but had to play the part of happy captive for the lannisters. or, beyond that, the pleasant doting daughter of petyr baelish. he'd taught her to smile as well as kiss, and sansa knows that she could draw the corners of her mouth into such a bright smirk. but --

but she isn't that girl, any longer. she has to be herself: for bran, and for robb. if she does it now, then she drags the game here with her. but it would be easier (and just a little fun) to show greed that she's a better liar than he gives her credit for. except...

except, in the end, it's best that he continues to underestimate sansa stark. her shoulders slump. ]

Lady. [ she corrects him, sullenly. ] I am the daughter of great house, Captain Greed. And not a little girl.

Well, excuse me, Lady Sansa.

[He likes that she corrects him. Even if it's not much, it's just enough spirit to turn a dull conversation somewhat on its head. He could not pinpoint why these were the sort of things he enjoyed, but he had always had a perverse perspective on the world. She was no exception to that rule.]

You know, my old man is a ruler of an entire country. Before all this, I was planning to off the geezer and take his place. I reckon that puts us on pretty even footing, wouldn't you?

[ what she 'reckons' is that it's proof enough of why he's such a prat -- perhaps a prince, or some other cruel young man with too much power and not enough heart. ]

That's murder, [ she as good as hisses. ] I am nothing like you.

[An indifferent shrug.] Nothing he doesn't deserve. If you could see his score card, you'd want to do the same.

[An entire country - gone all in one single moment.]

You presume too much, [ she chides. ] Captain.

Maybe. But you'd have to be a rotten human being to feel otherwise.

[ rotten. mayhap she was. at least, she felt hollowed out. isn't that a kind of rotted? ]

And a weak one to take your word as perfect truth.

[Or like a chocolate bunny! Exciting on the outside, but disappointing after the first bite!

I mean wait oh shit I'm not supposed to reply to that.

Greed listened and heard her words and understood them. But then he continued to be an asshole anyway.]

Like I told you before - lying isn't my style. The long and short of it is - I understand exactly what you are, Lady Sansa. No need to throw courtesies around if we're not feeling them.
