[ by all accounts, sansa stark has survived. she now lives on an armoured ship. her brothers are nearby -- alongside one brother's devoted friends, who have all been more kind to her kin than she can put to words. although nothing so much as approaches normal, she's beginning to feel settled. stability creeps in from the corners.

and this allows her to ask a question of her fleetmates: ] Is there any means by which I might find spare cloth and thread? And needles, too, of course. The ships give us so much, but I'm not certain -- [ not certain they can give me these. she does not understand their magic, nor the purchasing power of her device. ]

I like to embroider. I should like to do it again, if I could. [ but without a handmaiden to bid fetch these things, she doesn't know how to begin. perhaps it's as simple as looking in the correct spot -- but she was never raised to procure or purchase anything in her life. ]

Typically, personnel are people who help out the ship in other ways, like being a counselor. But since you're talking about sewing again... [He tilts his head a little]

Have you thought about maybe working as a seamstress? Helping people on the Fleet with clothing repair and stuff? That could fulfill your duties as "personnel."

Oh, Gods no. [ a soft exhalation. she's a little put off her game by his suggestion. ] I embroider. I don't repair things.

[ that's servant's work. isn't it? ]

Then... you could embroider things? I'm sure your crew would appreciate it too.

[It's all the same to Stefan, but now he's starting to think he should look into the differences. They're clearly important ones to her.]

Miss Sansa, I - I'm saying more that your augment isn't broken. You just haven't found what you're meant to do yet.

Will it take long to learn what I'm meant for? [ she presses her lips together. thoughtful. ] Only I already owe the Blue Fish a great deal.

I don't know. [He shrugs a little] Back home, it took me a while to figure out who I wanted to be.

You're kinda lucky, I think. You've got a wider net to cast than most of us.

[ alas, her net doesn't feel wide. ]

What did you decide -- in the end?

Me? Um, well - the Fleet gave me back my old dream. Kinda negated that whole struggle, if I could heal people in the med bay.

But back home, that wasn't an option [because he's a vampire]. So I decided to become a religious scholar.

You're a maester, [ she decides. ]

Um, thanks. [beat] What's a maester again?

They help in healing people. And they are scholars of all manner of things. [ but then... ] It is the septons who teach religion in the South, however, so mayhaps you are one of those as well.

Kind of. It took me a couple of years to memorize the Qur'an - er, my holy book, and I studied medicine in school for at least three years.

[gently:] I don't think I'll ever stop learning. Religion and medicine change with time, and the Fleet's given me more experience than I could've hoped for.

I imagine there are a great many variations upon faith within the fleet. [ a quiet glimmer of a brain beneath all that courtesy. ] Even in Westeros, there are religious differences between regions.

Right. Earth's the same way. So while I'm never going to know everything [though he's got all of eternity to learn], I'm doing what I can.

[ curious: ] Do you know about the Faith of the Seven? [ ... ] I cannot imagine Westerosi customs are so popular here.

I don't, but I'd like to hear about it. I know something about... [What did Bran call it again?] Weirwood? But I haven't had much luck finding it.

[ she almost smiles over his misinterpretation. ]

Weirwood. Yes. But weirwoods have very little to do with the Seven. My brother must have been talking to you about the Old Gods.

Right. Bran told me a few things, back when I was building the Interfaith Center.

[Heck if he could remember the finer details now. He wrote them down somewhere...]

How do the Old Gods differ from the Seven?

I -- I don't know if I'm the right person to explain it all. [ hesitation. ] But I can try. If it pleases you.

I'll be fine either way. [Because this is more important to her than him, from the sounds of it] If you're comfortable explaining it, then go ahead. If not, I can wait another day.

In Westeros, first there were the Old Gods. The First Men honoured them -- and kept their godswoods tidy and sacred. That is where the First Men communed with their many, countless, nameless gods. They did not need text or priest or ritual: only solitude, and the trees. Once, there was a holy weirwood owned by every noble house in Westeros. Today, those trees are only in the North. The Southron lords still keep godswoods, but the trees are different. Stand-ins.

Oh. [There must be a reason for that, but Stefan feels like he's pressing his luck already]

If there are stand-ins in the South, would you... would you be alright with a stand-in? Or should I try to find actual weirwood? [Godswood? Both??]

I dislike our chances of finding one -- although a proper weirwood would be ideal, I have prayed at stand-ins for two years now. [ ... ] The Godswood at the Eyrie was so barren that barely anything grows there.

Ah. If we can find a seed here, or at the next planet, we could ask Ino or Dr. Crusher about planting them in the gardens.
