[Remus sits on the floor in James' room, back against the bed, holding the communicator in one hand. The other is tangled in his hair; he pushes his hand through the tangled curls again and again throughout this little speech. Still, he smiles pleasantly enough. This first part is easy, after all.]

Right, hello. My name is Remus Lupin, I've been here a few months, and I've noticed a bit of a trend among those taken. There's quite a few of us with-- well, abilities, for lack of a better word. Abilities that most human beings don't have. They vary, of course, but-- it's an odd consistency. I've met more people with magic than I usually do in a year. Something to think on, perhaps.

In any case: even if it's a meaningless connection-- something that has no significance beyond sheer entertainment value-- I'd be interested to hear what everyone can do. Whether you call it magic or alchemy or even if it's-- god, I don't know, if you have a talent for juggling, I'd be interested. I want to know more about what kind of company I keep.

[His smile fades, now, and he hesitates visibly.]

For example, I, ah. I'm a wizard. Wand and all. I can do magic, which means anything from transfiguration to charms to knowing what plants to use to brew a good cold remedy. It's hardly infallible, but it's certainly useful. And, ah . . .

I'm a werewolf as well. The sort that only changes once a month. It's lasted here, but I seem to have control over it. I take quite a few precautions, so-- so it won't be a problem. I'm not the only werewolf here, nor the only other supernatural creature, but--

[He shrugs. His face is pale, now, the little scars standing out sharply against his skin-- but he forces himself to keep talking.]

I'm used to keeping it a secret at home. And I'm sure others are as well. So I suppose this is a . . . a way to let everyone know. Even if they don't want to tell anyone else, they know they're not alone.

[His mouth twists in a wry smirk.]

That, and I'm tired of keeping it a secret.

I am, yes. We've been friends for over a decade now.

Is that so? Well, he was real sweet to me when I first got here, so I'm glad to see he's got other friends around.

[She grins real big. It's clear how much she likes James.]

My name's Misty. And I'm a witch too, though not exactly like you guys. No wands or nothin'.

It's good to meet you. Are you-- how does your magic work, then?

[He sits forward, honestly intrigued.]

I've heard everything from symbols to intent to simply pure willpower being used.

I don't know, exactly. [Not like she was really at Miss Robichaux's for long enough to learn all the lore.] It's like... a gift. Every witch has her certain powers, the things that she's best at. Like me, I got powers of life and healing. They've always just sort of come to me. I don't have to think about it much at all, unless someone's been gone for a long time. Other stuff is harder though - so I guess that's where the willpower comes in. And some things I can't do at all. Only the Supreme can do everything.

'Course, some things every witch can do, like spells and potions.

I'm jealous. I've never been much good at healing-- just sort of pulling myself together until I could get someone proper to look at me. What sorts of things can't you do, if you don't mind my asking? There's spells in my world I can't accomplish, but generally everyone can touch every area of magic, albeit not well.

Well you see, I didn't know there were any other witches in the world until recently. I mean... I knew there had to be others, just had to be. I couldn't be the only one. But I had to figure out a lot on my own. Louisiana swamps got a lot of magic in them, if you know where to look, so I know a lot about plant and animal magic. Book magic though - I only just started learnin' that, and I'm still workin' on my telekinesis.

If you'd like, I could help. I don't-- well, it's not telekinesis for me, but I can move objects with my magic. If you'd like lessons, I'd be more than happy to show you.

[Oh my god look how happy you just made her: she absolutely lights up at his offer.]

I'd like that! And I can teach you what I know too!

That'd be fantastic--

[He lights up just as quickly, delighted-- both at the chance to learn and to teach.]

What ship are you on?

The Paisley. I'll be right in front-- we don't have much in terms of space, but I suppose my room will work quite well.

That'd be great! Hey... maybe if there are some other people who answer... like other witches or warlocks - wizards - maybe we should all get together sometime. Like a meetin' of minds.

I'm certain there has to be others interested. Even just to compare notes-- though I wouldn't mind learning.

[Or... relatively anyway: she's still getting the hang of the shuttles. It's weird, having all this knowledge in your brain that definitely wasn't there before. But she makes it to the Paisley safely with her stash of supplies and waits for Remus in the docking area.]

[It's very weird, and Remus doesn't blame her for taking his time-- but Merlin, he's excited. He loves comparing powers, he loves seeing what others can do. So he's grinning as she docks and he sees her.]

Right. Come on, we can practice in the kitchen-- I don't know how you want to do this, if you want to just start with what we're best at or--?

Well... What I'm best at probably ain't really helpful right now.

[She hesitates, but only for a moment. His vibes are good and anyway, she's as excited as he is.]

See, I got the power of Resurgence... I can bring people back from the dead.

. . . as the undead, or--?

[Because that's Dark magic, that is. Thoughts of Inferni flash through his head, sickening and desperate, and Remus pales slightly.]

Aw no, I don't mess with none of that zombie voodoo shit. When I bring someone back, I bring them back mind, body, and soul. They're just as alive as they were before.

[She hesitates, but then this kid shared that he was a damn werewolf so it's only fair. Her voice gets quiet.]

I can even bring myself back. [Usually. But it was Atroma this time, wasn't it?] I've died two times already.

I'm sorry.

[His face has paled, his cheerful demeanor lessened.]

I can't . . . I can't do anything even approaching that. That's not-- our magic doesn't cover things of that nature.

Apparently it's real unusual where I come from too. Got everybody thinking that I was the Supreme. Even I started to believe it.

The Supreme?

[Right. James and Remus' world works differently - maybe they don't have any such thing as the Supreme.]

She's the most powerful witch in the coven, the only one who can perform all the Seven Wonders.

Which are--?

[A beat, and then, uncertainly:]

Branches of magic? Or--?

[She shakes her head.] They're specific powers. Telekinesis, Concilium, Pyrokinesis, Divination, Transmutation, Vitalum Vitalis, and... [She drops her gaze. It's hard to think about this one.] Descensum.

[Some of those he knows, and some he can guess, and some he hasn't any idea-- but he sees the way she glances down, and that won't do.]

I've never held much with divination.

[He offers her a slight smile.]

It's very suggestive, I've always found. You can imagine how popular that made me with my teacher.
