[Remus sits on the floor in James' room, back against the bed, holding the communicator in one hand. The other is tangled in his hair; he pushes his hand through the tangled curls again and again throughout this little speech. Still, he smiles pleasantly enough. This first part is easy, after all.]

Right, hello. My name is Remus Lupin, I've been here a few months, and I've noticed a bit of a trend among those taken. There's quite a few of us with-- well, abilities, for lack of a better word. Abilities that most human beings don't have. They vary, of course, but-- it's an odd consistency. I've met more people with magic than I usually do in a year. Something to think on, perhaps.

In any case: even if it's a meaningless connection-- something that has no significance beyond sheer entertainment value-- I'd be interested to hear what everyone can do. Whether you call it magic or alchemy or even if it's-- god, I don't know, if you have a talent for juggling, I'd be interested. I want to know more about what kind of company I keep.

[His smile fades, now, and he hesitates visibly.]

For example, I, ah. I'm a wizard. Wand and all. I can do magic, which means anything from transfiguration to charms to knowing what plants to use to brew a good cold remedy. It's hardly infallible, but it's certainly useful. And, ah . . .

I'm a werewolf as well. The sort that only changes once a month. It's lasted here, but I seem to have control over it. I take quite a few precautions, so-- so it won't be a problem. I'm not the only werewolf here, nor the only other supernatural creature, but--

[He shrugs. His face is pale, now, the little scars standing out sharply against his skin-- but he forces himself to keep talking.]

I'm used to keeping it a secret at home. And I'm sure others are as well. So I suppose this is a . . . a way to let everyone know. Even if they don't want to tell anyone else, they know they're not alone.

[His mouth twists in a wry smirk.]

That, and I'm tired of keeping it a secret.

Remus poured his soul out, confessing something private and potentially frightening to others and you have to make it a joke.

Really Potter, you're such a cad sometimes.

[Gently, though of course James can hear:]

He did it for me, Lily. Made himself into an animagus just so he could keep me company every month.

[There is a pause, her expression melts from anger to wonder.]

You mean it's true? He can really do it? And he did it to help you?

[Well that was just... It was actually rather noble, brave even. Possibly unselfish but that was a bit much for her to come to terms with for James just yet.]

Remus, you must tell me truthfully. He did all that out of friendship?

Yes.

[Honestly, but without a second thought.]

They found out about my lycanthropy in third year-- round February. Worked all through the rest of that and fourth year to make themselves animagi-- and then they showed me, perfectly, in fifth year. They've come out with me ever since. It's-- it's calming, having them there. It means I tear myself up less. It doesn't come for free-- James and Sirius have certainly gotten their share of bites from me-- but they do it anyway, without hesitation.

Black too?

[Pardon her while she found a seat and promptly dropped into it.]

And to think I tore him for not applying himself in studies.

Pettigrew was in on it too I imagine, the four of you would have to be a troupe. [And now she looked utterly astonished, she shook her head.] Moony, Prongs..Werewolf and Stag. So that would make Black..some sort of dog? And Pettergrew...what on earth is a wormtail?

A dog, yes. An enormous black dog-- you've probably seen him, to be honest, he quite likes trotting down to Hogsmeade sometimes. Girls pay him mind.

[Wryly said, but it's the truth.]

Peter turns into a rat. There aren't many clever nicknames for that, I'm afraid.

...That prat! I have seen that dog, always nipping at scarves and coat hems and all the girls cooing over him, wanting to pet him. Bet he even listened into conversations.

[At Potter was a bit too obvious to get away with that sort of flirtation.]

A rat? Seems a bit less grand then the rest of you, doesn't it?

[He grins. Padfoot most definitely did listen to conversations, and Remus has most definitely scolded him on it-- but it hardly matters.]

Well, yes and no. I mean, no one's going to coo over a rat, but Pete can get into places we can't. There's a spot on the Whomping Willow that freezes the entire tree; he's the only one who can touch it.

[A beat.]

That was, ah, planted because of me, by the by.

[Because I almost mauled Severus, he most definitely doesn't add.]

[ and, from offscreen, though james has let remus handle most of this -- ]

A friendly reminder that I'm the top of my class.

[ of course he managed to do it, jeez. ]

I wondered, the sudden interest in how exotic aggressive flora does outside the green houses never really felt right to me.

[And there was the man himself.]

Not quite, my scores are still higher; even if I can't turn into an animal. [She smirked a bit at that.]

[ and james scoots into view, casually pushing remus over to sit. because that is what remus is for. ]

I will contest that, Miss Evans.

[ with a grin ]

Though I admit I was a bit distracted for my OWLs, given the whole animagi thing.

{ xo ]

[Rude! But Remus didn't need her to fight his battles, he was more than capable of doing it on his own.]

Well if you were distracted because you were breaking a dozen rules and sneaking out, albeit with good reason...

I'll be sure to keep more of an eye on you when I'm Head Girl. [Ha! Didn't see that coming did you?]

I bet you will.

[ with a grin, and he sits back up against the wall. ]

We'll have to coordinate our schedules, me being Head Boy and all.

[ poor remus, really. ]

I..what?

What?

[No...nonononono!]

You're Head Boy?

[Dumbledore wouldn't have given the position to jut anyone, would he? It was alays someone well liked, ok James did have a following. Someone smart, clearly he was brighter and more skilled than she;d previously thought. And someone responsible..which given what he and the others had been doing for Remus for years now maybe there was more to him that tousled hair and pranks.]

I suppose we will then.

Scout's honor.

[ with a slight crossing of his heart, and a grin, eyes bright. ]

We will.

[ xo ]

You were a scout?

[It seemed odd, but sure that was what she'd take away from that.]

Well, congratulations. Head Boy is quite an honor and a responsibility.

[ -- there's a bit of a blank stare at the first question, because. what? (james totally just picked up the phrase from his muggle-born classmates because he thought it was cool, lbr.) ]

-- thank you kindly.

[ pleasantly enough. ~~and maybe a little pleased with himself.~~ ]

I suppose the Headmaster wanted someone completely capable of keeping me in line, so congratulations to you, as well.

[Well that was an oddly blank look.

And then she snorted a laugh.]

Me keep you in line? You must think I am more powerful of a witch than McGonagal.

Of course I do.

[ earnestly. is remus still here? james is 100% ignoring him. ]

McGonagall doesn't threaten to string me up with any actual real force behind it.

Well you've deserved it! I swear some of the pranks you've pulled and the things you've done. Sometimes I think I'm the only one who hasn't fallen for your charm and windswept locks . [He had a fair mob of followers and admirers, she knew, she had enough of them telling her she was a fool for turning him down.]

So you admit that I have charm.

[ cheekily enough, though he files all of that away for later. ]

And I wouldn't say that -- I've got quite a gathering of people who are cautiously ambivalent. I'd say Sirius is the one with the better shot of wooing the entire school than me.

I didn't, [But she would be lying to say he wasn't, even he knew it himself. He also knew he was good looking which was never a good thing.] I think you have to potential to be.

Maybe. [Annnnd rapid subject change.] Black has his fare share. But I've endured enough of the dreamy sighs and whispered conversations about the two of you to last me a life time. It's like some girls have nothing else to talk about.

Well, maybe they don't.

[ james has never had much time for people like that. there's a war on -- it's time to be serious and focus, and whatnot. so on and so forth. ]

But I wager you don't actually hang 'round those types, do you?

[What? No pompous agreement? No saying "of course they fawn all over us Lily, I mean who wouldn't? He actually dismissed it without commentary.

Very strange.]

Well no, not more than necessary. I had better uses for my time.
