The Engine Room

You cannot avoid the noises coming from the engine room, especially when all they seem to be is banging, some sort of ... hissing noise that was a blowtorch at work, and of course, the thudding and the cursing so foul that old maids would have fainted.

Tyrion, of course, at work. At work at all kinds of things - new weapons from the ores he managed to buy, conversion piping for his sink idea. There are tools everywhere, and a very intense dwarf in the midst of all of it. Banging away, for your convenience.

[ Nova appears in the doorway and she doesn't look particularly pleased ]

What are you doing?

[tallasaking]

Working.

[Is Tyrion's terse reply as he is trying to wrangle together a setup that looks like it is to hold a sink.]

Obviously. That or sabotage. Is this for your improvements?

[tallasaking]

Sabotage is a lot simpler. [He muttered, as he twisted something into place, and sighed happily.]] There, finally.

What's that?

[He pushed it upright so she could see that it was a mechanism to allow the sink to be lowered without losing piping and squirting water everywhere.]

It is ... three quarters of the way finished. I shall require some special kind of piping.

Is this what you do at home? Invent things?

[tallasaking]

In part ... mostly I learn, and study, and make astute political observations that no one listens to. I also fix problems and never get credit for them. [Bitter? Always. Still, he gives Nova a lopsided grin.]

Would you believe, this is the most fun I have had outside of a whorehouse in my life?

[He cracks a smile, and then laughs, even surrounded by different metal parts he's trying to work together. Then he gives her a more thoughtful look.]

I take it you had an unhappy childhood?

[takeabow]

[ leans her back against the wall, lacing her fingers behind her back and thinking about how to answer. she's fairly impassive ]

It just was what it was. I didn't think too much about it until I was around people who were upset for me.

[tallasaking]

Hmmmm. Yes. I knew that my life was nothing rosy, but there were certain things I had just taken for granted. For example, being a dwarf was something to be hated. Do you realize in different worlds, being a dwarf is nothing more out of place than having red hair?


[He shook his head, as he tweaked the mechanism.] A galaxy made of ... all sorts of things that I never thought possible.

[Well that was...colorful. Lily stepped in trying to make herself as conspicuous as possible so as not to startle him. She sat a tray down on one of the more clear areas and leaned against the wall. She waited until a quiet moment.]

I heard you were working down here all day; thought you might be hungry. [She gestured to the tray, since Nova had shown her the kitchen she'd felt free to cook to help the rest of the crew. It was simple, some sort of basic bread, and a vegetable stew; even dehydrated food could be made palatable with enough care and spices..and boiling.]

[Tyrion huffed a little as he dug his heels into what he was twisting into place, his mis-matched eyes flashing anger and frustration.] I am famished. I am also this close to taking this device and ramming into the wall as many times as I feel like screaming 'die bastard die'.

[He looked up at her, his mouth twisting.] Colorful, yes?

Vibrantly. [Lily nodded and laughed, she was given to very free and easy laughter. It came from trying to surround herself with things that made her happy and helping others was part of that.]

Well if you're going to attack it I suggest you eat something so you can take it on at full strength.

I do always like being vivid in my descriptions. [He pushed himself up gingerly, careful of his legs as he hobbled over to where the food is.]

You truly didn't need to do this.

What was I to do? Let you work down here day and night forgetting to eat and getting more short tempered?

[She waited, might as well take his dishes back when he was finished so he wouldn't have to worry after it.]

I can't imagine trying to work all this.

Well that certainly wouldn't be wise. The Seven knows what I do when my temper is as short as I am.

[He pulls himself up so he can eat, before he looks over at the jumble.]

I actually find it to be a welcome distraction.

From what? [He made it sound as though perhaps he was over burdened by other aspects of life here. And friend were some of the best antidotes for that.]

A variety of personal and political problems here, and back home. I come from a very unpopular family, Lily, and I have spent my life trying to remove their stain from my own honor. It has ... become increasingly hard of late.

But your family has no bearing on who you are as a person! [There was a nerve struck with her. Families.] Anyone who cannot see your worth is an idiot.

[tallasaking]

That ... is not considered true in society, sad to say. Or at least, in my society. Who your family is is supposed to define who you are as a person. There are certain ideals, certain attitudes you are expected to portray.

But how does a family get a reputation if not by the acts of the individuals in it? It seems a hateful sort of culture to me, like pure blood wizards who think they are better than others.

[tallasaking]

Well, I do not know this pure blood wizards of yours ... but yes. Everyone thinks they are better than everyone else. In some cases, it is true by the simple fact that the family is made of better people. And ... they are usually turned upon like carrion.

[He holds up a finger.] But these families have learned how to survive, no matter what they were before. I will say many a bad thing about Westeros, but we are always adaptable. And we always find a way to win.
