[ For all intents and purposes, Alistair feels utterly alone. Sure, there are several people in the fleet who know him, but he doesn't seem to know any of them, and so it's weird. And if he's being honest with himself, he was feeling pretty lonely well before he got here. All of the friends he made during the Blight, when they were all on the road together, pretty much left after it ended, after his coronation. Even Amell ran off somewhere with Leliana, leaving him to the tender mercies of his uncle, his late brother's widow, and the rest of the Fereldan nobility.

He's been keeping up a cheerful face - he doesn't really know how to do anything else - but what with being here, learning about things he probably shouldn't have learned about, and having a little bit of money from - somewhere, he's finally just. Showed up to the bar. Varric's is the closest thing to familiar he can find, so he's drinking whatever ale his money can buy. And he's not stopping until the money runs out or he is insensible on the floor. ]

Ah. So a few centuries of relative peace and quiet and then everything goes to hell for a while. [Archdemons. Alistair, you're almost as bad as Sam for giving her something new to twitch about every other sentence.]

Does that mean you have to fight the archdemon too?

Well, yes, killing the archdemon is how you end the Blight. Without it, the darkspawn lose all organization and can be driven back underground.

Annnd I'm guessing there's no way you can deal with the darkspawn permanently while there is no archdemon.

Too many of them, not enough of us. They've had control of the Deep Roads for centuries.

That'd do it. So there's no end, ever. {That... sucks. So hard.]

How often do you have to deal with this?

[theirinurpants]

Blights? They happen every few centuries or so, though darkspawn can theoretically raid a village at any time - it doesn't happen often in Ferelden, though.

So you got born into a great time period, huh. Is this still ongoing at home, or did you get dragged here right in the middle of it?

No, it's over. We defeated the Blight, and Amell - Solona, killed the archdemon.

Well, that's something at least. I'm glad to hear it.

Yeah, that was a pretty good day. I mean, a lot of people still died, but. Shortest Blight in history - that makes for a good story, I guess.

Did you become King before or after or during?

[theirinurpants]

Well, after, mostly. I mean, the coronation wasn't until after the archdemon was killed.

But you had a big hand in killing the archdemon, right? No wonder people think highly of you, then.

I dunno how big it was, but yeah, I helped. I was - there, anyway. I killed a lot of darkspawn.

[And modest. As long as he has a head for resource management, he'll probably be an excellent king.]

I'm glad it's over, anyway. I mean-- I know that probably doesn't make everything perfect in your kingdom or anything, but that kind of darkness must be terrifying for villages when it's present.
