[Guess who just shows up to breakfast one... afternoon? Loki emerges from his office, looking for all the world like a man who has just woken up from an extended nap, barely open eyes, trying to stretch his back and shoulders, the whole nine. He wanders into the kitchen, fumbles around until he makes himself something hot and dark enough that he can pretend it's coffee, and stares suspiciously into the cup before drinking.

Ugh, his mouth tastes like someone glued one of Thor's feet to it. Ugh. What possessed him to sleep like this...

(Guess who has no idea he's been missing for weeks~)]

[A bit later: Broadcast]

[Awake now, and... well, he looks amused. Which is to say as if he's planning on flaying someone alive.]

Why yes, I have returned. Hide all of the party favors, lock up your sons and daughters, cancel the pedestrian fireworks displays.

A funny thing, missing time. You'd never know it was gone until someone tells you. Has anyone else fallen victim to such thievery?

A very different sort of religion than they have in my day, I would guess. Interesting.

[Has humanity somehow become less annoying? One could only hope.]

God, the son of a Messiah. I don't believe that's normally the way your species goes about it.

[ Eh. Give or take. ]

It isn't. But that's what people get for trying to play God. They end up making ones they do not like.

[A soft chuckle.]

Not the god they'd like, but that which they deserve, perhaps. [For their interference. Fools.]

What were they attempting to create, these humans of yours?

A special kind of human. One who could break down the barriers of time and space with a single look. That man was my father.

[ Though his father was the seed, the promise of greater things. Leto felt a brief pang in his heart. ]

A human native to magics. [Huh. Well, they've apparently been trying to make those in his day as well, too much less success. Silly humans.]

Did you get on with him? [Mild curiosity.]

[ Leto considers this. ]

I could not say. He left when I was born. I knew him, the way my mother knew him, the way my grandmother did. I knew him through his subjects, through his acolytes. I knew him as a messiah.

[ He loved Paul. Hated him. Wished that Paul had tried to stay, tried to love them. Leto knew why he couldn't, but the child in him couldn't accept it. ]

But as father and son? No. We were strangers.

Mmm. [He can all but smell that complexity. Idly, he wonders if Leto might actually understand his own horrid relationships with either person who could term themselves his father. That would require a willingness on his part to talk, however. Though presumably Leto already knows, and that's an annoying, disquieting thought.]

I wonder why he chose the path of abandonment. [He knows why the monster that whelped him did, of course. Tiny monster, too weak to bother with, left to the mercy of invaders. Ugh. ]

There is no need to wonder. The reason was clear.

[ Though it wasn't at the start. Paul wanted to avoid the trap, wanted his family to avoid the trap. Love wasn't why, not even close, but there was love in a fashion. His father loved their mother so much that grief had stolen away all his light. ]

[Dryly:] Do tell, then, so I must wonder no more.

But then you'll get bored with me.

[Gosh Leto, stop flirting with him, he's going to think you like him or something.] And here, I thought you were a little puzzle boxy of mysteries. How disappointing.

[Yes, he's teasing.]

[ What an unheard concept to begin with. ]

Mysteries are just concepts too complex for many to absorb. One must know when and what to dole out. Too much and it is a flood. Too little and it is a drought.

Sometimes. And others, mysteries are but holes in the dataset. [Pull the other one, it's got bells on.] Too much and one is known to be a shallow well. Too little and one is assumed to be.

Though I suppose I could play the what broader purpose does it serve to Leto, when he tries to wind me up game. That on can be quite fun.

I'd certainly enjoy it.

[ Winding up people was easy. Leto did it, whether he meant to or not. He's not qualified for deep, emotional discussions of any kind. He tries . . . and that's probably all that could be said about it. There's too much in his head to separate emotion. ]

Though it would also be amusing if you could wind me up. No one has ever really succeeded there.

[Note to self, do not ever let Leto know if he's managed to wind Loki up. He refuses to give other people the satisfaction any more.]

I'm certain you would. Shall you pull my hair too, when my back is turned?

[that means the boy likes you, right?

But oho, this sounds a challenge. And there's a certain... amusement to meeting someone who seems to be as much of an asshole as him.]

Hmm, and what reward might there be, beyond the satisfaction of a job well done...

[ Oh, he's probably faintly aware but he won't bring it up. ]

One secret.

[He thinks about it a moment.]

Three secrets. One of significant import.

[This is fun.]

Is it wise to bargain with someone who holds all the cards?

[ He's easily amused though. ]

Two. My final offer.

Has anyone ever accused me of being wise? [Eyebrow.] Though you seem to have misplaced the card that lets you enjoy life's little surprises.

[Makes two of them.]

Two, one of which will be significant. [Because he knows the tactics he'd pull in this situation. Secrets come in all shapes and sizes.]

No, which is precisely my point.

[ Leto longs for a universe of surprises. Unfortunately, that universe will only be achieved at his demise. ]

Two.

[ Significance is a terrible word to use and leaves enough leeway for Leto. ]

Then you ought be at peace with my ways. [At this point, he's amused enough with the situation, having enough fun that it's a very genuine sort of smile he flashes. Not so different from his more calculated expressions, but for the light of his eyes.]

Two that I will find interesting.

Can anyone ever be at peace?

[ Leto is relieved. Loki, whatever incarnation is important to him. Ruby is family, a concept that was ingrained in him long ago. He could never go against it. ]

Consider it done.

Many seem to manage complacency with little effort and call that good enough. [Shrug.] But I would not know. Satisfaction is not in my nature.

A bargain, then. [No handshake over a network, and that's fine with him; he dislikes that human affectation.

As for when he makes his end up. Well. That's going to require some observation, perhaps. He didn't say when he'd be winding Leto up, after all. Or how.]

[ Leto is aware it will come when he least expects it. Fear is the mind killer and he has no fear. A moment when he can be surprised, can be taken aback from the possibilities that swim in his eyes . . . that was a good day. Leto doesn't look upon negative emotion the way most do. ]

Of sorts. We shall see if it reaches fruition.

[ He's sure Loki has the skill to pull it off. But Leto has a huge advantage. ]

If. Have faith, Leto. [Strong words considering they've just met. But this is another part of the game. He even throws in a flirtatious look from under his dark lashes.] The impossible is part of my breakfast routine.
