Where I come from - or in my family, anyway, and families like mine. You give your child a special name at their baptism, the name of a saint that's meant to protect and guide them in life. It's just sort of a thing that's done, I never questioned it when I was young other than to wonder why my father chose what he did for me.

Mine is Anthonio, after Anthony of Padua. You're supposed to pray for him to find lost things, any kind of lost things, even ones that aren't tangible - lost faith, for example. It's funny but I don't think I ever actually have. Prayed to him. I always wanted to find all the things I lost by myself, which doesn't actually work that well all of the time.

The patron saint of today is Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. He died on February 27. That's the thing, saint name days are named after the day a saint died on. So Gabriel died on the same day as me. I've been wondering if that's important - if I should recognize it in some kind of permanent way. Or if I should just try not to think about it, except that doesn't work very well either.

The other thing is that I remember having very strong opinions about some of the saints when I was younger. Catherine of Siena defied her parents and cut off all of her hair so she wouldn't be encouraged to marry. I used to think she should have done what they asked of her. Now I think if I ever had a daughter, I'd want Catherine to watch over her.

I do too, and it means "wisdom" which I think is a good thing for a girl to be named after.

True. Although I keep noticing that as a general rule, girls are wiser than us, so maybe it's less a reminder and more a badge of honor in that case.

I like Maria, but there are so many Marias. And I know everyone names children after relatives but it's better as a middle name, probably, or it gets confusing.

ohhhhhhh that's true. And then you have to worry about the people who didn't get picked as namesakes feeling offended, too, mmmm.

Sophia Maria sounds pretty...

Mine too. I think it's important to think about how it sounds, since you'd be saying it all the time.

And Maria's the oldest besides me, so it's fair anyway.

I think she'd like you but you'd out-bake her, so it might be dangerous. I know that's not what we're talking about really, but I was thinking about it.

How much younger is she? You should tell me more about her, what does she look like?? You were thinking about it????

Oh. A little over a year, she's very responsible and would always help me with things around the house, she taught the littler ones to read and she's a good cook but not as good as you. She looks more like my father than me, she has dark hair, but she's taller than you by a few inches. And I was thinking about it because when we go back I want to bring them to New York if they want to go, all of them, so I was thinking that she'd probably like you a lot but want to punch Jojo in the face.

. . . We're pretty similar.

Well, good. You're going to. Maybe you can help explain all of this to her because I'm sure not going to. And you can tell her about the Statue of Liberty and fur coats.

Does she like to dance?? It'd be perfect if we all went dancing, too, because then there'd be four of us, two and two.

[mylegacy]

. . . I don't really know. She never took much time for that kind of thing, but I don't know if that's because she didn't want to or because she just didn't feel she had time.

So that meant she was in charge when you came to stay on Air Supplena, huh...

...Good. Then coming with us will be a nice treat after all her hard work.

We'll take good care of all of them, Caesar.

They get to have a break, too. Right?

Mmhmm. And it'll be good for us, too, to have them to take care of.

Yeah.

None of us want to be a burden, but they won't be, because it'll be good for us.

And if they want to help out, they can do that too. They won't have to, but they can.

You have to meet my little ones too, sometime. Clarissa and Bianca. They're shy, but in different ways, and I know they'll feel at ease around you either way.

13 and 11! We go in pairs, sort of. Francesca and I, and then the two little ones.

Clarissa is shy because she's self-conscious, before Bianca was born she was the baby and we were her grown-up older sisters, but rather than trying to stand out she just...tried to fade away instead. But she likes to sing! Only ever with someone else, mostly me. She just doesn't have the confidence, she doesn't like standing out at all.

And then Bianca is the littlest, and she's quiet because she's sick often. It's just her bad luck, she always seems to catch cold or run a fever more easily than the rest of us.
