[ Whatever's going on, Chris is pretty intent on it. He's mucking about in the kitchen working with the meager supplies and there is definitely the smell of chocolate protein stuffs everywhere. He started on it the night before but now that he's messing with it in earnest it smells... fantastic, actually. There's semi-solid chocolate, gel chocolate, gel peanut butter, all getting mixed up real well and chilled inside the mini-fridge.

Is he making brownies?! ]

So... I know, I know. Don't remind me. But can I shimmer over today? I want to see you. In person.

[ Beat. Maybe he needs to up the ante. ]

[ No matter how Chris gets there, he's on the Wonderduck again with some of his makeshift brownies and something else kind of clunky-looking in a bag. Feel free to assault him for being new or unknown or carrying chocolatey perfection. He's not going to be handing it out on his own, you know! ]

Especially me. I know I don't look like much, but if I wanted I could be very powerful. To some of the Orerines, I and the other Ferines are monsters...I was afraid to believe things could be any other way, but my friends showed me that wasn't true.

If I thought that your father being a demon meant we couldn't get along, then I would have nothing to believe in. And I've learned that even if people make assumptions about you, then that doesn't have to change who you are. And you can still try to show them truth.

[She's preaching because she loves you, Chris. Also because Shirley likes being explicit about her life lessons and then sticking to them like glue.]

[ Okay, when did Shirley turn into a mini-whitelighter. He gives her another odd look and then shakes his head. ]

Yeah, um... no, that's not what I was saying. Just.... you surprised me. Um. Back home, it's a lot more obvious when you're a demon and... people tend to not get over that very quickly at all. Whether you're good and trying to help them or not.

[You don't know, Chris. This case is a tiny bit embarrassing, though.]

Oh. Well...I still meant what I said. If he's your father, then I trust him.

[ Someday if Leo is ever around, Chris makes a note to introduce him to Shirley. Maybe he'd learn a thing or two about having a spine while still being a whitelighter. A guy can hope. ]

Right. [ He licks his lips, a bit thrown off by the whole thing. ] Thank you. It's... That means a lot.

[She smiles. So it helped, after all.]

You should get back to making those brownies. I'm sure your father will love them.

I'm definitely going to get back to making the brownies.

[ He raises his brows at her. ]

But, uh... you can stick around if you want.

Yeah, sure. Of course. I mean, you'll probably see him around sometime too.

[Makes sense. And hey, sounds good to her.]

That's good. Oh, and tell him I wish him a good birthday, of course. How old is he today?

Yeah, I got shimmering from him so we're not exactly shipbound.

Uh... about a hundred.

[ He doesn't even need to see Cole yet to know his father's going to be generous with his age. Chris is always going to think it's silly but that doesn't mean he won't indulge Cole anyway. ]

[That's older than she expected, but they did just go over the whole demon thing. Do demons live longer?]

He looks very healthy for his age.

[ That gets a small laugh. ]

Yeah, he's definitely doing good for his age. I mean... sort of, he should live a lot longer still.

[ Speaking in natural lifespan here, not the lifespan of Cole Turner who has already died twice. Three times to Chris. ]

What about you? How old are you?

[Is Chris secretly in his fifties? And everyone used to joke about Will being old.]

Me? I'm as old as I look: twenty-two. I'd definitely get older before I stopped aging... if I stop aging.

[That's almost disappointing. But more importantly--that's an interesting qualifier.]

Well... [ Chris looks around, eyes shifting to different parts of the room like he's literally searching for words. ] ... Yeah, if. We don't really know if I'm gonna have the same thing going on yet or not.

[There's not much Shirley can say about that.]

Is something...unusual about your relationship?

[She doesn't sound too sure as she says it - would that be prying too much? It'd be understandable if Chris didn't want to answer.]

[ That actually catches his attention rather quickly. There is something very unusual about the relationship, but there's no way Shirley could have caught onto that, right? ]

What do you mean?

[Shirley actually has little idea what she's getting at. How do demons even work?]

Well...your father is a demon, isn't he? Are the children of demons different from their parents in some way, and that's why you don't know?

[Given the way she's grasping, it's pretty clear she has no idea what she's talking about.]

[ That gets a bit of a laugh, and he ducks his head to hide it. ]

No, it's nothing too complicated. Dad's a demon, but... Mom isn't. So I'm less demon than Dad is. You know?

Oh...

[That would make sense. Right.]

So what's your mother like, then?

She's, uh, she's a witch. [ Wait. That sounds bad. ] Not—I mean, literally a witch. She's magic too. Mom is amazing. She's focused, determined, knows what she wants and goes for it, beautiful, loving, kick-ass.

[ He shakes his head. ]

Mom's great.

It sounds like you love your family a lot. And your mother really does sound like an amazing woman.

[It's pretty sweet, really.]

Yeah, my family... I've got a lot of problems back home, but my family isn't one of them.

[ Yes they are, but Chris just doesn't realize. Poor bab. ]

That's good. And I'm sure they can help you with the problems you do have, can't they?

[Shirley's got no living relatives to talk about, but she sure feels that way about the family she's gained since.]
