[ stern-faced, peggy appears upon the network. ] Does 'zero matter' mean anything to anyone? Pointed, I know, and a bit a long shot...but -- if there's anywhere I might find some resource or knowledge about such matters, then the fleet is my best hope. Otherworldly mysteries are not well within my wheelhouse.

[ there are other questions she could ask -- but no, zero matter might be the safest inquiry out of a great many others. and even then, it's barely safe at all. but it must be asked, for now she feels most preoccupied with the work conducted back home. the fleet is almost a secondary thought -- a distant, archaic priority. ]

Alternatively -- [ she sighs. until now, she hasn't been agent cater within the fleet, much preferring to be the more social and civilian version of herself. ] -- I wouldn't mind hearing a bit more about worlds. Different worlds, universes, what have you. I know none have been successful in creating a rift between this place and any other but -- surely, such rifts must exist elsewhere.

ACTION (STARSTRUCK)

[ long story short: peggy carter took a nasty spill inside one of the sr shuttles, and is now back on her feet after being out cold for nearly a day. on the surface, it seems like nothing's the matter. not seriously so, at least. but as she goes about her ship duties, there's a glassy-eyed quality to her gaze. it takes her a little too long to remember someone's name -- as though she's reaching back by weeks or maybe months to recall details she'd been living every day.

find her in the kitchen, where she's preparing one of her two or three or sometimes four daily cups of tea. or find her in the cargo bay where she's trying to use the recreational equipment. she quickly gives up on the punching bag because although she no longer has stitches holding her guts together, there persists a tight ache in the flesh. she settles for the treadmill.

wherever else she might be encountered, her crankiness is persistent. ordinarily patient with her crew, peggy's kindness has been thinning out all week. she appears tightly wound and disengaged. ]

[ -- she considers the truth. to her, it sounds ludicrous: to be knocked out cold, only to wake up with a year's worth of experience dumped into her brain. but it appeared to be almost normal for others in the fleet. perhaps she shouldn't be so shy of sharing her paranoia with the crew.

but she hesitates. ]

Pry? God, no. You're well within your rights. Can't have the First Mate off her rocker. [ a crinkle of her nose. ] But I'd be glad for a bite.

Oh, well, I don't know about that. You might be off your rocker, but that doesn't mean you can't still do a good job!

[ He offers her up a serving, though. Sorry, Peggy, it's not very good. ]

As long as you're not about to, I dunno - grow an extra head and start killing us all.

Never something I've been known to do. Luckily. [ she fishes a fork from the drawer and -- carrying her tea with her -- takes a seat across from alistair. ] I hope you've been settling in alright on the Starstruck. Paranoia about spare heads aside.

That's a point in your favor, then.

[ He flashes her a smile - because hey, he's seen it happen, or something very like it. It wasn't pretty. ]

Oh, I'm - you know. Finding this whole thing really weird, but I'm nothing if not adaptable!

Good. [ her smile is polite. ] Adaptation is a necessary skill to have within this fleet, as I've come to learn.

Generally I'm okay as long as no one is actively trying to kill me.

[ He flashes her a charming smile. ]

Though I do hope we find actual land soon. I find myself missing dirt. And sunlight.

Careful what you wish for. The first spot I visited while part of the crew was sort of...dusty moon. Grit and dirt everywhere. I was finding sand in my shoes for weeks.

Yeah, I think I prefer mud to dust. I'm used to mud.

Well - yes. There's a lot of mud in Ferelden. And I've been on the road a long time.

[mucked]

[ she thinks about trenches. she thinks about france -- and italy -- and muddy, rainy days. but then peggy gives her head a firm shake. ]

Ferelden. I've not heard of that one, yet.

[theirinurpants]

[ Mostly Alistair tries not to think about things like that. So he makes light of them. ]

I haven't heard of most of the places people say they come from, so I guess we're even!

Earth, for me. A decidedly common point of origin within the Fleet.

Right, the incredibly generic place-name, I've heard it a lot. ...No offense, it's just... saying you're from a place named after dirt doesn't really mean much to me.

Well. If you're looking for something a little less generic, then -- New York. [ or is it california, now? oh, well, she's only visiting... ] And before that, London. Earth is merely the planet, and not the nations thereupon.

I know, I know! It's just - don't you think it's a little funny? It's like saying you're from the land of Land.

But New York and London sound more like specific places, even if I have no idea where they might be! Me, I'm from Ferelden.

Funny? [ she levels him with an expression that just about borders on stoic. ] On the contrary, I find it rather pragmatic. The very earth of Earth is shared by a great many people with a great many different opinions, creeds, and motives. It would hardly be appropriate to name it anything besides its basic recognizable properties.

Like leaving it a blank slate for everyone else to develop individually. Don't you think?

[theirinurpants]

Um. [ Wow she has - thought a lot about this! More than he has, at any rate. ]

Wouldn't it just be 'the world', then, if everyone is from it? I dunno, we don't have a name for the world where I come from. And everyone calls the particular place they're from something particular to them.

'World' is just a word. As is Earth. Words are what we make of them -- and maybe World would have done just as well, but that's not how history shook out. Precedent is set and so long as it isn't hurting anyone, I don't see any reason to change it.

[theirinurpants]

All right, all right, I get it! Earth people can't take a joke. [ He holds up his hands in mock-surrender. ]

We can. I assure you. [ peggy's smile is toothy -- and just a little ruthless. ] But we reserve it for when the joke's worth taking, I'm afraid.

[ no harm no foul. she means it all in good fun. ]

Yeah, yeah. You'll have to do better than that if you want to offend me. I've been hearing my jokes are bad for as long as I can remember.

[ He waves it off easily. After a few weeks wandering the countryside with Morrigan and Wynne, he can handle most things. ]

Once in a while, but when you have hair this good, none of that matters.
