How long have you been practicing, Obi-Wan?

A few weeks now. I'm afraid I haven't managed any proper tunes as of yet. This is the first time I've ever played an instrument at all.

[princessia]

[ Better than her. She hasn't touched an instrument at all. A few weeks sounds like enough for learning a simple tune, maybe. She wouldn't know. But she tries to sound encouraging! ]

I'm sure you'll get a song down soon!

[beardstrokes]

[ He smiles, buoyed by her enthusiasm. ]

I hope so. You're welcome to listen to some painful renditions of a show tune, if you like.

[princessia]

A show tune? Um...

[ Painful. Okay, maybe she feels a little wary now. But she feels she should at least try to give it a listen! ]

Sure! I'd like to!

[beardstrokes]

[ He catches onto her reaction. ]

I'm exaggerating a little. It's not that bad.

[princessia]

[ She blushes, stammering. ]

I-I wasn't worried at all!

[beardstrokes]

Of course not.

[ Totally believable. ]

[princessia]

Um... [ She fidgets. Anyway...! ] L-let me hear that show tune of yours!

[beardstrokes]

All right. Let me get my guitar. Do you mind waiting here or would you like to come to my room?

[princessia]

Can I see your room?

[ Maybe she's a little curious about what it looks like... ]

[beardstrokes]

Of course. Right this way.

[ He leads the way, setting up an amicable pace. When they get there, Elize might be struck by how . . . plain it is. Obi-Wan has done nothing to decorate it and there are only a few objects on his desk. A toy lightsaber, an opened pack of tea and a few books he has borrowed from the library. ]

[princessia]

[ She wears a hopeful look in her eyes, expecting something interesting. Up until she sets foot in his room, her expression falters a little. It reminds her of before Cullen had put her in charge of decorating his room: boring and unimpressive. There are a few items laying about, but she was hoping to at least see something hanging on the walls. ]

...Have you thought about decorating your walls, Obi-Wan?

[beardstrokes]

Hm?

[ He glances at his walls, not seeing the problem. ] Not really. Jedi don't really . . . decorate their lodgings.

[ Anakin did, but Anakin wasn't exactly an exemplary Jedi. ]

[princessia]

What? Why not?

[ That's no fun... ]

[beardstrokes]

It's one of our beliefs. We're not meant to have material possessions.

[ He already has far too many for his liking already. ]

[princessia]

But what about those?

[ She glances over in the direction of the books and the toy light saber. ]

Are you not planning to keep them?

[beardstrokes]

The books I borrowed from the library and will return soon enough.

[ He pauses at the saber. Kanan had bought that for him. And now, Kanan was gone. ]

I will keep the saber for now. . . . It was a gift.

[princessia]

For now? You should always keep it and take good care of it! Was it from a friend? Gifts are... a token of friendship!

[ It's what she learned from Driselle. ]

[beardstrokes]

[ A friend? He's not sure that word applies. Kanan was important to him. Kanan was a Jedi, Depa's padawan. And briefly, one of Obi-Wan's students.

Finally he settled on an answer he was confident in. ]

He was important to me. I hope he's doing well wherever he is.

[princessia]

[ It sure sounds like a friend to her. From his words, she can guess that the person was on the fleet and had left. (And one that used to be part of her crew, too.) Obviously it's hard for her whenever someone she knows winds up leaving. ]

I hope you'll see him again.

[beardstrokes]

[ He smiles faintly. Unless Kanan shows up to the Fleet again, he doubts it. Still, there is only the Force. ]

I hope so too, but I'm sure he's doing fine wherever he is.

[princessia]

[ She nods, with a smile. Even though she doesn't know for certain, she's been doing her best to keep her hopes up for herself and others. ]

So does this mean you can keep material possessions as long as they're a gift?

[ Because she's totally thinking of gifts for Obi-Wan now... ]

[beardstrokes]

[ He hesitates. He hates to reject a gift. That would be unseemly. ]

I suppose gifts are all right. So long as I'm not seeking to buy too much for my own sake.
