I know. And I know that if I didn't do it, he would have manipulated someone else into doing it.

[ With a rueful smile. ] He tries to assassinate me and yet my survival always seems to benefit him in some way.

It does make me wonder about our missions. At least, when I was with Anakin, I was . . . safer.

[ The ones he had done individually tend to go a lot more awry. ]

[ Thoughtfully: ] You think he may have sabotaged your missions somehow?

[ Not impossible. Theoretically the Chancellor shouldn't know the movements of the Jedi, but the war meant the Council and the Senate worked together more than usual. He may very well have access to information she's not privy to as a Senator. ]

Well, neither of us liked each other much.

[ And it would make sense. Obi-Wan would be a foil to the plan of making Anakin a Sith. No connections, working on fear. ]

Why would he risk exposing himself for the sake of dislike?

[ For someone who is playing a very long game of chess, it seems rather careless. Unless there's an ulterior motive. But isn't there always? ]

Not outright dislike, but I have a certain popularity too.

[ There's little point in denying it. ]

With the Holonet or with assassins?

Both, unfortunately.

And at this point, we know who's behind both.

Now that we know . . . perhaps using the Jedi isn't the best way to dethrone him. Maybe we can trace it back to him using the Senate.

Anakin and I discussed that, actually. I'll gather the Senators I can trust and act as a proxy between you two and the Senate.

If a Jedi were to take him down, the Republic would see it as the Jedi making a bid for power. I'm sure Palpatine arranged that as well.

[beardstrokes]

[ He nods. That's impressive. And he's glad to hear Anakin is talking to Padme about it. ]

At the most, we might be able to contain.

[ But he's not certain. They've never done it before. ]

[ Padme looks away for a moment, lost in thought. So many thoughts are swirling in her head and she's not sure which ones she really believes. And there are some that she doesn't want to believe. (Could the republic be saved?) ]

It's better than our odds now.

[beardstrokes]

[ Is it? Obi-Wan isn't sure. He feels discombobulated, being here for so long. ]

Our odds have certainly improved.

[ Any odds are better than no odds. Any hope is better than no hope.

She gives him a light smile to lighten the mood. Mostly her mood. ]

In any case, I've taken up enough of your time.

I have plenty of time lately.

[ But he bows slightly, letting her leave if she needs the time alone. ]

[ Still, she stands and gathers her things. ]
